To add fonts to Canva, select Brand, open your Brand Kit, go to Fonts, choose Add to category, then Upload a font. The detail people trip over: only team owners, administrators and brand designers can upload, and only OTF, TTF and WOFF files work.
If you've ever tried to match a client's brand in Canva and found the font simply isn't in the list, you'll know why people search for this. Canva's library is big, but a business with its own typeface needs that exact font, or every post looks slightly off-brand.
The route is uploading fonts to a Brand Kit. It comes with rules about who can do it, which files work and what the licence has to say. Here's all of it as Canva's help centre describes it, plus the fixes for the usual hiccups.
Who can add fonts to Canva, and on which plans
This is the first thing to check, because it explains most of the cases where the option is missing. Canva's help says team owners, administrators and brand designers can upload fonts. The feature is available on Canva Pro, Canva Teams, Canva Business, Canva Education and Canva for Nonprofits.
So if you're on the free version of Canva, or you're a team member without one of those roles, you won't see the upload button. That's a permissions point, not a fault in your account.
Which font files Canva accepts
Prepare the file before you open Canva. According to the help page:
- Canva accepts OTF, TTF and WOFF files.
- It doesn't support variable fonts, ZIP, EOT, SVG or WOFF2 files.
- Files must be under 15 MB.
- A Brand Kit can hold up to 500 fonts, with up to 18 styles per font family.
A common slip is trying to upload a ZIP straight from a font download. Unzip it first and upload the individual font files inside.
Uploading a font to your Canva Brand Kit, step by step
- From the Canva homepage side panel, select Brand.
- If you have more than one Brand Kit, choose the right one from the dropdown.
- Go to Fonts, then select Add to category.
- Select Upload a font, then add your file.
- Confirm, and wait for the upload to finish.
Canva's help describes this as a desktop route. It doesn't list a separate phone method, so I'd do the uploading on a computer.
Finding your new font inside a Canva design
Once the upload finishes, open a design, select a text box and open the Font menu on the toolbar. Your files sit under Uploaded fonts. Canva's help adds that you can set an uploaded font as a heading or body style through the brand fonts setup, which is handy if your whole team should use the same typeface.
Licensing: what to know before you upload a font to Canva
This part matters more than people expect. Canva's help says to upload only fonts you're licensed to use, and that fonts should be licensed for embedding. It points to the Canva Terms of Use on this, and says Adobe Originals fonts aren't supported.
If you're not sure what your font licence allows, read the licence that came with the font, or ask the foundry that sold it. I can't tell you what your particular licence covers, and neither can I advise on legal questions, so this one is worth a quick check before a whole brand goes live.
Fixing font problems in Canva after you upload
The help page names several common causes, so work through them in order:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
| What you see in Canva | What the help centre suggests |
|---|---|
| Fonts aren't grouped into one family | The file's metadata may have the wrong family name. Fix the metadata and re-upload |
| You can't find your fonts | They may be in a different Brand Kit |
| Bold or italic is unavailable | Upload the bold or italic file separately |
| The upload fails | Possible causes are an unsupported format, a corrupted file, a duplicate or a permissions issue |
On that last row, remember that only admins and owners can upload. If you're a designer without that role, ask whoever runs the account to do it, or to give you the right role.
Brand fonts that make Canva graphics look consistent
Uploading is only half the job. A consistent look comes from using the same two or three fonts everywhere: one for headings, one for body text and perhaps one accent. Set them once in the Brand Kit and every new design starts from the right place. For small businesses sharing Canva with a freelancer or a team member, that stops the slow drift towards six different typefaces.
Fonts matter on personal documents too. If you're designing a CV in Canva, my guide to adding your LinkedIn profile to a resume shows what else belongs on the page. And if you'd like a wider view of the tool first, I've set out who Canva suits and what to check first in my review.
If you can't add fonts to Canva at all
- Check your role. Only team owners, administrators and brand designers can upload.
- Check your version of Canva against the list of plans above.
- Check the file type, and unzip downloads before you upload them.
- Check you chose the right Brand Kit if you have several.
Menus change between app versions, so if the buttons look different on your screen, search Canva's help centre for the current wording before you give up.
