AI Essay Checkers (2026): 10 Essay Checker Tools Compared

An AI essay checker reads your essay and gives feedback on structure, argument, grammar and sometimes a predicted grade, while teacher versions score work against a rubric. Some also flag possible AI writing, which is far less reliable than it sounds. Ten tools follow, in no particular order.

Essay checkers have split into two camps. Student tools give you a score and suggestions before you hand work in, while teacher tools grade a whole class against a rubric and draft feedback that the teacher then reviews and edits.

The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the provider's own website, read this week. If you only need spelling and grammar, my roundup of grammar checkers covers that narrower job.

AI essay checkers at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website or App Store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free tool, a free version or a free tier. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, even where there's a try-free button, so check the provider's own page before you sign up.

What AI-detection scores can and can't prove

OpenAI's own experience is the clearest warning. It said its AI text classifier correctly identified 26% of AI-written text as likely AI-written, while wrongly labelling human-written text as AI-written 9% of the time, and that it was very unreliable on texts below 1,000 characters. OpenAI withdrew the classifier in 2023 because of its low rate of accuracy.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Detection tools have moved on since then, but the lesson stands: a score is a signal, not proof. If you write your own work, keep your drafts, notes and version history, because they show how the essay came together far better than any percentage.

Writing about the past? Start with history study apps.

Student checkers versus teacher graders

  • Student checkers give a quick score and line edits, which helps most on personal statements and timed practice.
  • Teacher graders score against a rubric and draft comments, and the better ones make the teacher approve every grade.
  • Writing replays show how a document was typed, which can settle an argument about authorship.

How to use a checker without losing your voice

  1. Write the full draft yourself first, without any AI help.
  2. Run the checker and note the three biggest points it raises about argument or structure.
  3. Fix those in your own words, then ignore small style suggestions that don't sound like you.
  4. Read the final version aloud before you submit it.

Do you make essay feedback, grading or writing tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on AI essay checkers

Use a checker for feedback on structure and clarity, and treat any grade or AI score as a rough guide. The most useful thing it can do is point at the weakest paragraph, so you can rewrite it yourself.

If you're a teacher, choose a grader that leaves you in control of every mark. And if you're unsure where your school draws the line on AI help, my guide to whether AI writing counts as plagiarism walks through the grey areas.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI essay checker?

It depends on the job: college applicants need different feedback from teachers grading a class or learners preparing for IELTS.

Are there free essay checkers?

Yes, several tools here name a free plan or a free grader on their website, so check the free plan column.

Can AI detectors prove an essay was written by AI?

No. OpenAI withdrew its own classifier in 2023 because of its low accuracy, and it had wrongly flagged human writing 9% of the time.

Can teachers use AI to grade essays?

Yes. Several tools here grade against a rubric and draft feedback, and the better ones make the teacher approve each grade.

How do I prove I wrote my essay?

Keep your drafts, notes and version history, or use a tool that records how the document was written.

Is an essay checker the same as a grammar checker?

Not quite. A grammar checker fixes sentences, while an essay checker also looks at argument, structure and how well you answer the question.
