An AI essay writer turns a topic or prompt into a structured draft, and the useful ones now attach citations from real sources so you can check every claim. The bigger split is between tools built for academic essays and general writing assistants. Ten tools follow in no particular order, described from each vendor's own page.
Search for an AI essay writer and you'll find two very different kinds of tool sharing one name. Some generate a whole essay from a title. Others work more like a research assistant, finding sources, suggesting the next sentence and formatting citations while you write. Which one you need depends on what your school, university or editor allows.
I've listed the ten below alphabetically and in no particular order. Every description comes from each vendor's own website, read as of Oct 2026, and I haven't ranked them. If you've already got a draft and want to see how it looks to a checker, my guide to plagiarism checkers covers that side.
AI essay writers side by side
I checked the free plan column on each vendor's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version or free tools, or calls the product free. Trial only means the page names a time-limited free trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, so check the vendor's own site before you sign up.

What's changed on the essay tool pages
Here's what surprised me when I opened the vendor pages. Rytr, a name that still turns up on older essay writer lists, now describes itself on its home page as an AI relationship manager and follow-up assistant, so it isn't on this list. Smodin's home page now leads with an AI detector, an AI humanizer and a plagiarism checker, with the writer further down. And Essaybot's home page now opens on a library of example essays and writing lessons rather than a generator.
Meanwhile the tools built for students have moved the other way, towards sources. Several now put citations in their page titles, and one research assistant says it draws cited findings from more than 250 million research articles. That's the shift worth knowing: the better tools now show their working, so you can check it.
Cited drafts, research help or polishing?
- Cited-draft tools. These start from a topic and build an essay with references attached. They're quick, but you still need to open every source and check it says what the essay claims.
- Research-first assistants. These help you read papers, take notes and cite as you go, so the argument stays yours. They suit dissertations, literature reviews and anything marked on originality.
- Polishing tools. These work on a draft you've written: grammar, clarity, similarity and AI likelihood. They don't write the essay for you, and they're often what a tutor would be happiest for you to use.
How to use an AI essay writer without getting into trouble
- Read your school or university's AI policy first. Some allow AI for brainstorming and outlines but not for writing you hand in.
- Use the outline, not just the output. An AI outline shows you a structure; your job is to fill it with your own reading.
- Check every citation. Open the source, find the page and make sure the quote or claim is there.
- Keep your drafts and notes. If anyone questions your work, a version history showing how the essay grew is the best evidence you've got.
- Rewrite in your own voice. Tutors know how each student writes, and a sudden change in style is what gets noticed.

My plain advice on AI essay writers
If you're a student, start with a research-first or cited-draft tool and treat whatever it produces as a first draft you'll rewrite, never the finished essay. Check every reference by hand. If you write well already and only want a cleaner draft, a polishing tool is the safer choice, because the words stay yours.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AI essay writer?
It's a tool that turns a topic, prompt or outline into a structured essay draft. Many now add citations, outlines and formatting in styles such as APA and MLA.
Can AI write an essay with real citations?
Several tools on this list say they cite real sources, and some show the source behind each claim. You still need to open each reference and check it says what your essay claims.
Is using an AI essay writer cheating?
It depends on your school or university's rules. Many allow AI for research and outlines but not for writing you submit as your own, so read the policy before you start.
Are there free AI essay writers?
Some vendor pages here describe a free essay writer or free writing help, shown in the free plan column. Others let you start free without naming a plan, so check each vendor's own site.
What's the difference between an AI essay writer and an essay checker?
A writer drafts the essay. A checker reviews a finished essay for grammar, similarity or AI likelihood. Some tools on this list do both.
