Arlo vs Ring: Which Security Camera App Suits Your Home?

Arlo suits people who want sharp 4K cameras with zoom and one app that runs several places at once. Ring suits people who want a big choice of doorbells, cameras and alarms, longer video history and professional alarm monitoring. If picture detail and managing more than one place matter, look at Arlo; if you want a full alarm system with long history, look at Ring.

Both brands make cameras, doorbells and floodlights, and both put their most useful features on a plan, so the smart comparison is how long your clips are kept and what happens in an emergency. I read Arlo's plans page, Ring's site and plans page, and both App Store listings.

How long each keeps your clips

This is the biggest gap. Arlo's App Store listing says an Arlo Secure plan gives you 30 days of video history, and that Emergency Response, Object Detection and Video History need a plan once the trial ends. Ring's plans page lists up to 180 days of video playback and event history, so you can scroll back through six months of your timeline.

If you only check clips when the doorbell goes, 30 days is plenty. If you run a holiday let or need to look back at something weeks later, Ring's longer window matters.

Arlo's cameras and sensors

Arlo leans on picture quality. Its cameras offer up to 4K resolution, 12X zoom and colour night vision, and its plans page shows the Ultra 3rd Gen with a 180 degree view, 4K HDR, auto-zoom and tracking, and a swappable battery. Arlo's home security system uses All-in-One Sensors with 8 selectable detection functions.

The app is built for quick action. When motion's detected you get an interactive notification with an animated preview, and you can call a friend, sound a siren or start Emergency Response from there. Arlo also offers 24/7 Live Security Experts who watch your home for you, and you can manage several locations and arm or disarm them with one tap. Smart activity zones and schedules help cut the alerts you don't need, like a busy pavement in front of your drive.

Ring's alarms and monitoring

Ring is the bigger system. Alongside doorbells and cameras, it makes Ring Alarm, smart lights and the Ring Smart Lock. Ring Pro adds 24/7 Professional Monitoring, Video Descriptions and Active Warnings, and there's a Virtual Security Guard service on top. Ring's listing says Professional Monitoring is available in all 50 US states and Canada, excluding Quebec, and notes that Ring doesn't own its monitoring centre. The range also covers the Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam 2K for watching a whole room, and you get instant alerts with live video and Two-Way Talk in the app.

Who each brand suits

Arlo suits people who want the clearest picture, landlords and small business owners keeping an eye on more than one site, and anyone who likes acting straight from a notification. Ring suits families who want an alarm system and cameras from one brand, and people who want months of history. Cameras are only as safe as the account behind them, so read my comparison of Bitwarden and 1Password, and if you're protecting a workplace, these tips on building a strong cybersecurity culture help.

My advice on Arlo or Ring

Ask yourself how far back you'd ever need to look. If a month is enough and you want the sharpest image with zoom, choose Arlo. If you'd like six months of history or a full alarm with professional monitoring, choose Ring. Use the trial on whichever you pick to test detection at night, because that's when most cameras prove themselves.
