If you're searching for Apple TV Plus and landing on pages that say Apple TV, that's why: Apple has dropped the plus from the name on its own pages, but it's the same streaming service with Apple Originals. There's one monthly price, and several ways to pay less or nothing at all.

What you get for the price
Apple describes the service as hundreds of exclusive shows and films, with new releases every week and no ads on Apple Originals. You can watch in the Apple TV app on Apple and Android devices, smart TVs and streaming sticks, or online at tv.apple.com, so you don't need Apple hardware to subscribe.
The detail most people don't expect is sport. Apple's US page says Formula 1 races, MLS matches and Friday Night Baseball doubleheaders are all included with an Apple TV subscription. For Formula 1, Apple says that covers every Grand Prix, including practice, qualifying and Sprint sessions, and for MLS it says every club and every match with no blackouts. If you'd otherwise pay for a sports service to follow one of those, that changes the value of $14.99 a month.

Apple offers a free 7 day trial for new subscribers only. After that, the plan renews automatically at the monthly price. Apple also notes the subscription doesn't include third party branded subscription services, or films and shows you rent or buy in the Apple TV app, so those are always extra. Ways to get Apple TV Plus for less
- Buy an Apple device: Apple TV is included free for 3 months when you buy an eligible Apple device and redeem the offer within 90 days of activation. It's one offer per Apple Account and one per Family Sharing group, and you can't use it if you've had a previous three months free or one year free Apple TV offer.
- Apple Music Student: Apple says the Student Plan comes with free access to Apple TV. In the US it renews at $6.99 a month, it's for verified college students only and it doesn't extend to a Family Sharing group.
- Apple One: Apple TV is included in every Apple One bundle, which starts at $21.95 a month in the US.
- The Peacock bundle: Apple's US page advertises Apple Originals with Peacock's live sports and TV for $17.99 a month.
What isn't included in the price
Apple is clear that the subscription doesn't cover everything you'll see in the Apple TV app. Third party branded subscription services cost extra, and so do films and shows you rent or buy. That's worth knowing before you assume the app's whole catalogue is included.
Sharing Apple TV Plus with family
One subscription covers the household. Apple says that with Family Sharing, up to six people can share one Apple TV subscription, you included. That makes the per person price far lower than it looks if you're splitting it across a family.
Apple TV Plus inside Apple One
If you also pay for Apple Music or iCloud storage, the bundle can work out cheaper. In the US, Apple One is $21.95, $27.95 or $39.95 a month depending on the plan, and every plan includes Apple TV. How to subscribe without overpaying
- Check whether you bought an Apple device recently. If it's within 90 days, claim the 3 months free first.
- If you're a college student, check whether Apple Music Student already gives you Apple TV.
- If you pay for two or more Apple services, compare Apple One before subscribing separately.
- Otherwise, start the 7 day trial in the Apple TV app and set a reminder to cancel before it renews.
- Turn on Family Sharing so everyone in your home uses the one subscription.
My verdict
At $14.99 a month in the US, Apple TV Plus is priced like a main streaming service, so don't pay full price if you can avoid it. Claim the free months from a new device, use the student route if you qualify, and if you're already in Apple's world, the Apple One bundle is the better buy. If you just want one season of a show, subscribe for a month and cancel.
