Sri Lanka isn't named on KDP's payment options table, so it falls under the Other section, where KDP says it likely doesn't support direct deposit or wire to your bank's location and lists check instead. The IRS treaty table gives Sri Lanka a copyrights royalty rate of 10. The catch is slow, threshold-bound cheques.
Sri Lankan authors ask me a very particular question about Amazon KDP: not whether they can publish, but how the money reaches them. I've read KDP's help pages on payment options, thresholds and tax, plus the IRS treaty table, and Sri Lanka's answer is different from what many people assume. I'm not giving tax or legal advice, so check anything specific with a local accountant or your bank.
Why Sri Lanka isn't on KDP's payment table
KDP's payment options page lists countries one by one against direct deposit, check and wire transfer. Sri Lanka isn't named there. For countries that aren't listed, the page says: 'We likely don't support direct deposit or wire transfer to your accounts in your bank's location.'
That's the single most important line for you. Many how-to videos assume a local bank deposit, but KDP's own page doesn't promise one for Sri Lanka. Read the page itself before you plan your income around a deposit that may not exist.
The cheque route and which currency it uses
In the Other section, the method KDP lists is check: US dollars for most marketplaces, British pounds for Amazon.co.uk and Canadian dollars for Amazon.ca. The page also says checks have minimum payment thresholds and take longer to receive than electronic methods.
KDP adds that after the payment date it can take up to 30 days for a check to reach the address in your KDP account. So the postal address you enter matters as much as the bank details do for people in other countries.
Cheque threshold: the running total
KDP's thresholds page lists the check minimum as 100 US dollars on Amazon.com and 100 pounds on Amazon.co.uk, applied after tax withholding. If earnings are below the threshold, KDP says it keeps a running total and pays once the threshold is met.
For a new author with a few small sales, that can mean months before anything is posted. Don't judge a book by the first payment date; judge it by the royalty report.
What the IRS treaty table says about Sri Lanka
The IRS treaty Table 1 lists Sri Lanka with a copyrights royalty rate of 10, under treaty article 12(2). The same table shows an industrial equipment royalty rate of 5 for Sri Lanka, which isn't relevant to book royalties.
The table is a US withholding table. It tells you nothing about how Sri Lanka taxes your royalties at home, so ask a local accountant. KDP also says eBook sales, and print sales on some marketplaces, are subject to 30% US tax withholding unless a reduced rate applies, so the tax profile changes what you keep.
| What I checked | What the official pages say for Sri Lanka |
|---|---|
| On KDP's payment table | Not named, so the Other section applies |
| Direct deposit or wire | KDP says it likely doesn't support them to your bank's location |
| Listed method | Paper cheque by post |
| Check delivery | Up to 30 days after the payment date |
| IRS table copyrights rate | 10, article 12(2) |
Reading your royalty report before the cheque
Because the payout lags the sale, your KDP reports are your real record. KDP says royalties are paid every month, approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which the sale was reported, and 90 days for Expanded Distribution. Add the postal time on top of that and the gap between a sale and money in your hand can be long.
KDP also says that where royalties are paid in a different currency, Amazon converts them at an exchange rate determined by Amazon, and the converted amount is inclusive of all fees associated with the conversion. Compare what your cheque says with what the report says, and keep both.

ITIN support letter: the three conditions
KDP lists three conditions for an ITIN support letter. Your country of permanent residence has an active tax treaty with the US, you've completed the KDP tax profile, and you've received a US payment from KDP. The order matters: tax profile first, one payment, then the letter.
KDP says your applicable withholding rate appears in your tax profile, based on your answers on the W-8 form review page. It also says a W-8 expires on the last day of the third calendar year after you sign it, and if it lapses the rate reverts to 30%.
Scams that use the KDP name in Sri Lanka
- KDP doesn't ask you to pay a fee to release royalties.
- Don't send your tax form or ID to anyone who contacts you by message and says they're from Amazon.
- Be careful with people who offer to run your KDP account for a share of earnings.
- Be careful with courses that promise a fixed monthly income from low-content books.
If cheques don't suit you, what else exists
If waiting for a cheque doesn't work for you, other services exist for holding foreign income. I'm not ranking them. My guides on what Wise says for Sri Lanka and how Payoneer works there cover what each service says, and PayPal in Sri Lanka covers the third. KDP pays only by the methods on its own page, so ask its support whether any other account type is accepted for you.
So, does Amazon KDP work in Sri Lanka?
You can earn royalties, but on KDP's own page the route is a cheque, not a local deposit. Expect delays, a threshold, and tax paperwork you'll need to get right. Whether a book sells at all is a separate question that no payout page can answer.
