Payoneer in Sri Lanka: Can You Withdraw in Rupees? (2026)

Payoneer's own guide shows a Sri Lanka route that matters more than the bank page: link your account to the eZ Cash app, withdraw in US dollars and eZ Cash credits Sri Lankan rupees. Sri Lanka isn't named in Payoneer's list of same-country local-currency bank withdrawals, so check the fee and rate shown before you confirm.

If you freelance from Sri Lanka and a client has asked for your Payoneer details, you probably want two answers: can the money reach me in rupees, and what will it cost? I've read Payoneer's pages and a Central Bank of Sri Lanka statement so you don't have to. I can't see your account, so treat this as a checklist of what the sources say, then confirm the details with Payoneer and your bank.

The eZ Cash wallet route in Sri Lankan rupees

Payoneer has a guide just for this. It says you link your Payoneer account to the eZ Cash app, open the Remittance menu, enter the amount in US dollars and press Withdraw. The guide says eZ Cash will automatically credit your eZ Cash account with Sri Lankan rupees, and you get an SMS with the transaction details.

The same guide says eZ Cash is approved by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. What it doesn't give is a fee, a limit or a processing time for this route. It only describes transfers as easy and quick. So don't promise a client or a landlord a specific arrival time until you've seen the numbers on your own screen.

Payoneer first announced the eZ Cash link in a press release from 2017, describing eZ Cash as a mobile money network and a brand of Dialog Axiata. So this isn't a brand new idea, but check that the app flow still looks the way the guide describes.

Why a Sri Lankan bank withdrawal may look different

Payoneer's fees page has a row for withdrawals to a bank account in the same country as yours, in local currency, in supported countries, at 1.50 US dollars. It names a list of countries. Sri Lanka isn't on it.

That doesn't tell you Payoneer can't pay into a Sri Lankan bank. Payoneer's withdrawal guide says it connects with local banks in over 150 countries and territories, and that availability is subject to a country-check tool. It means you shouldn't assume the cheapest flat-fee route applies to you. Use the checker, then read the fee on the withdrawal screen.

No rupee receiving account, so clients pay in another currency

Payoneer lists 13 currencies with local bank account details: the US dollar, euro, British pound, Singapore dollar, Hong Kong dollar, Australian dollar, Canadian dollar, Japanese yen, UAE dirham, Mexican peso, Indonesian rupiah, Brazilian real and South Korean won. The rupee isn't there.

In practice, your client pays you in one of those currencies, or in another one Payoneer supports, and the money sits in that balance. The conversion to rupees happens when you withdraw. Ask the client which currency they'll use before you send an invoice, because the choice changes what lands and what you pay.

Fees, in the words Payoneer uses

On receiving, Payoneer's fees page lists a receiving account in your local currency as free, and one in a currency that isn't your local one at 1% with a minimum fee of 1.00 US dollars or equivalent. For withdrawals to a bank account in the recipient's local currency, with no currency conversion, it lists 1.2% to 4%, and says a minimum fee of up to 20.00 US dollars or equivalent may apply in some countries.

There's no Sri Lanka-only line, so anyone quoting one fixed figure is guessing. Payoneer says it shows the fee and exchange rate before you confirm. That screen is the only number that counts.

What the Central Bank of Sri Lanka has said about service income

A Central Bank of Sri Lanka statement from 2022 described services exports as foreign exchange earnings of resident Sri Lankans who provide tourism, professional services and similar services to non-residents. It said exporters of goods and services need convert only the residual balance of export proceeds into rupees, after permitted deductions. It also said workers' remittances aren't covered by those rules.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

I'm quoting a statement from 2022, and rules in this area have changed before. I wouldn't treat it as today's rulebook. If you earn from overseas clients, ask your bank or a Sri Lankan accountant what applies to you now, and keep invoices and payment records so you can show where the money came from.

Getting set up without drama

  1. Ask your client which currency they'll pay in.
  2. Link your Payoneer account to eZ Cash if you want rupees in a wallet.
  3. Or add a bank account in your own name, then run the country check.
  4. Read the fee and exchange rate on the withdrawal summary before you confirm.
  5. Keep the invoice, the payment record and the withdrawal confirmation together.

Payoneer's guide says you must add a bank account before you can withdraw to one, so do that early rather than on the day you need the money.

If Payoneer isn't the right fit

Some Sri Lankan freelancers will find the wallet route perfect and others will want a bank deposit. If the client prefers a card-style checkout, how PayPal works for people in Sri Lanka covers the other option clients often suggest. To see how Payoneer treats a country with a local-currency receiving option, Payoneer for people in Indonesia is a useful contrast. Compare the written fees, not the sales language.

And be wary of anyone offering to sell or rent you an account. Payoneer ties accounts to verified identity, so an account in someone else's name is a problem waiting to happen.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get paid in Sri Lankan rupees through Payoneer?

Payoneer's guide says that if you link eZ Cash and withdraw in US dollars, eZ Cash credits your account in Sri Lankan rupees. Payoneer doesn't list a rupee receiving account.

Is eZ Cash approved?

Payoneer's guide says eZ Cash is approved by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. It doesn't give a fee, limit or processing time for the Payoneer link.

Can I withdraw Payoneer money to a Sri Lankan bank account?

Payoneer says availability is subject to a country-check tool and that it connects with local banks in over 150 countries and territories. Use the checker and read the fee on the withdrawal screen.

How long does a bank withdrawal take?

Payoneer's withdrawal guide says funds are available within 3-5 business days. Treat that as a general statement, not a Sri Lanka promise.

Do the Central Bank of Sri Lanka rules affect my freelance income?

A 2022 Central Bank statement covered export proceeds, including professional services to non-residents. Rules can change, so ask your bank or an accountant what applies now.
