AI for Tradespeople: What Helps UK Plumbers and Electricians in 2026

The short version: AI won't rewire a consumer unit or trace a leak, but it will write your quotes, chase your invoices, answer the phone when you're up a ladder, and get you more five-star reviews without you lifting a finger.

The short version: AI won't rewire a consumer unit or trace a leak, but it will write your quotes, chase your invoices, answer the phone when you're up a ladder, and get you more five-star reviews without you lifting a finger. Most UK trades using it spend under £50 a month on it. The tools that matter are ChatGPT, WhatsApp Business, and whatever job management software you already use, not some flashy new "AI for trades" app you've never heard of.

Why trades are the perfect fit for AI, and nobody's telling you that

I've worked with three trade business owners in the last eighteen months, an electrician in Watford, a plumbing firm in Essex with four vans, and a heating engineer in Glasgow who does his own books at midnight. All three had the same problem before we started: they were brilliant at the actual work and rubbish at the paperwork around it. That gap between "I fixed the boiler" and "I sent the invoice, chased the review, and quoted the next job in under ten minutes" is exactly where AI earns its keep.

Here's the bit that surprises people. Trades are further ahead of most white-collar businesses on this because you already run lean. No marketing department, no admin team, often just you and a phone that rings while you've got your hands full of copper pipe. AI doesn't replace anyone in your business because there's usually nobody there to replace. It just gives you back the two or three hours a day you're currently spending typing.

The three things AI does for plumbers and electricians

Writing quotes and estimates

This is the single biggest time saver and the one nobody talks about enough. You describe the job in a sentence or two, AI turns it into a proper, professional quote with your terms, your pricing structure, and the right level of detail. A rewire quote that used to take twenty minutes to type from your van, callout, first fix, second fix, testing, certificate, can be drafted in under three minutes once you've set it up right.

I put together a set of ready-made prompts for writing quotes specifically for this, and the electrician in Watford I mentioned uses one version of it for every single job now. He types "new consumer unit, 3-bed semi, existing wiring is old rubber but not my problem to replace, customer wants it done before Christmas" and gets back a quote he only has to check numbers on and send.

Answering calls and messages when you can't

WhatsApp Business, connected to a simple automation, can answer the "are you available this week" messages that come in while you're on a job. It won't book a gas safety check for you, that still needs a human who knows the diary, but it will collect the details, the postcode, the problem, and a photo, so when you do call back you're not starting from scratch. One plumbing firm I advised cut their missed-enquiry rate hugely just by having an automated first reply that said "got it, someone will call you back today" instead of silence for six hours.

Reviews, reputation and getting found

Google Business Profile and Checkatrade both run on reviews and recency. AI is useful here in a boring, unglamorous way: it drafts the follow-up text asking for a review, it drafts your reply to a review (good or bad), and it can turn a five-star review into a short social post. None of this is exciting. All of it works.

A real example: the Essex plumbing firm

The four-van plumbing business I worked with had a very specific problem. The owner was spending Sunday evenings, every single Sunday, writing quotes for the week ahead because that was the only quiet time he had. His wife did the books. Nobody was doing marketing at all.

We set up three things over about six weeks. First, a ChatGPT-based quote template built around his actual pricing and his actual way of talking, so the quotes sounded like him and not like a robot. Second, an automated WhatsApp reply for enquiries outside working hours. Third, a simple monthly routine where his admin day involved feeding job photos and one-line job notes into AI to generate before-and-after social posts and Google Business updates.

Within two months his Sunday quoting sessions went from roughly two hours to about twenty five minutes. That's not because the AI does the pricing, it doesn't, he still checks every number, it's because the structure and the writing, the bit that used to eat the time, is now instant. His Google Business Profile went from posting once every few months to weekly, and enquiries through Google, not referrals, went up noticeably within the quarter. None of this required him to learn to code or buy expensive software. It required about a week of setup and the discipline to use it.

The uncomfortable bit nobody wants to say out loud

Here's the part that most people writing about AI for trades won't tell you. If your quotes start reading beautifully but your work is average, AI makes that gap more obvious, not less. A brilliantly written quote followed by a job that turns up two hours late with no dust sheets does more damage than a scrappy text message quote followed by tidy, on-time work. AI polishes your front door. It does absolutely nothing for what's behind it.

The other thing worth saying plainly: customers, especially older ones who make up a huge chunk of the plumbing and heating market, can often tell when a message has been AI-written and feels impersonal. A quote that's too smooth, too corporate, too "as per our conversation" can read as less trustworthy from a one-man-band than a slightly rough one that sounds like a real person wrote it. The fix isn't to avoid AI, it's to edit what it gives you until it sounds like you, not like every other trade using the same template. I'd rather see a plumber send a quote with one typo and real personality than a flawless one that could have come from any firm in the country.

What AI should never touch in this trade

This matters more here than in almost any other industry I work in, because the stakes involve gas, electricity and people's homes.

  • Never let AI generate anything that looks like a Gas Safe or NICEIC certificate, or anything implying compliance sign-off. That's a legal document, not a template.
  • Never use AI to diagnose a fault from a customer's description alone and quote a fixed price before you've seen it. It'll confidently guess wrong, and you'll be the one eating the cost.
  • Never let an AI chatbot handle an emergency enquiry, gas smell, no heating in winter with a vulnerable person in the house, without a human seeing it within minutes. Set the automation up to flag urgent words like "smell gas" or "no heating" and route straight to a phone call, not a queue.
  • Never copy AI-generated safety advice into customer-facing material without a qualified person checking it against current Building Regs Part P or the current edition of BS 7671.

Step by step: setting this up in the next week

  1. Day 1: Open ChatGPT (the free version is enough to start with) and build one quote template using three of your last real jobs as examples, so it learns your pricing style and your tone.
  2. Day 2: Set up WhatsApp Business if you haven't already, it's free, and write one automated "we've got your message, someone will call you back today" reply for out-of-hours enquiries.
  3. Day 3: Write your review-request message using AI, then send it manually to your last five completed jobs to test it before automating anything.
  4. Day 4 to 5: Turn two recent jobs into before-and-after posts for Google Business Profile and Facebook using AI to write the captions from your photos and notes.
  5. Day 6: Check your Gas Safe or NICEIC registration details, insurance info, and terms are all correctly reflected in your new quote template. This is the boring step people skip and regret.
  6. Day 7: Send one real quote using the new template to a real customer and compare how long it took against your old method.

If you want more ready-built examples rather than starting from a blank page, there's a full set of 20 templates for quotes, jobs and reviews built specifically for this trade, which is faster than working it out from scratch on a Sunday night.

What this costs

Realistically, doing it yourself: ChatGPT's free tier will get most one-van operators through basic quoting, though it's worth knowing the free version has daily message caps that a busy day of quoting can bump into, which is covered in more detail in this guide to ChatGPT prompts and usage limits. The paid tier is £20 a month and removes that ceiling. WhatsApp Business is free. Add a basic job management tool like Tradify or ServiceM8, £25 to £50 a month depending on team size, and you're set up for well under £100 a month total.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If you'd rather someone else set the whole thing up in a day rather than spending your evenings on it, that's the kind of hands-on work an AI implementation coach does, and it's worth knowing roughly what that costs before you ask around, which is exactly why I wrote up how much an AI consultant costs in plain terms with real day rates.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI replace my job management software like Tradify or ServiceM8?

No, and it isn't trying to. AI is best used alongside your existing job management software to write the words, quotes, replies, review requests, while the software handles scheduling, invoicing and job tracking. Think of AI as the admin assistant sitting on top of the system you already run.

Will customers trust a quote that was written using AI?

They won't know unless it reads like a template rather than like you, so the work is in editing what AI gives you until it sounds like your voice, with your usual phrases and your usual level of detail, not a generic corporate quote that could have come from any firm.

Is it worth paying for ChatGPT Plus as a sole trader plumber or electrician?

If you're sending quotes daily and writing regular social posts and review replies, yes, £20 a month is a small cost against the hours it saves, and it removes the daily limits that trip up the free version on busy weeks.

What's the biggest mistake trades make when starting with AI?

Using it to write things it shouldn't, certificates, compliance statements, fixed-price diagnoses without seeing the job, instead of the things it's good at, which is quotes, replies, reviews and marketing copy built from your own real jobs.
