What actually drives the number
Three things. Scope, how much you want built and how complex it is. Seniority, whether you are buying a junior operator or someone who has actually shipped this before. And how much is done for you versus advised, because a strategy deck is cheap and a working system that removes ten hours a week is not. Cheap advice that never gets implemented is the most expensive option of all.
How to judge whether it is worth it
Work backwards from the return. If a build saves your team ten hours a week, put a value on those hours and compare it to the cost. If it wins you one extra client a month, the maths usually answers itself. Good AI consulting pays for itself in time and revenue, quickly. If it does not, it was the wrong build.
