Ahrefs doesn't offer a free trial. Its help centre says so directly, and points you to Ahrefs Free instead: a permanent free account that lets you check ranking keywords, backlinks and site audits for websites you can verify you own. If you need Ahrefs data on other sites, the cheapest route is the paid Starter plan, listed at $29 a month as of October 2026.
If you've seen a trial mentioned elsewhere, don't rely on it. Ahrefs now frames its free account as the opposite of a trial: limited, but with no expiry and no card.
Ahrefs Free versus a typical trial
Ahrefs makes this comparison itself on its free account page:
| Ahrefs Free | A typical SEO tool trial | |
|---|---|---|
| Expiry date | None | 7 days |
| Credit card required | No | Usually yes |
| Access | Limited, but permanent | Full, but temporary |
| What happens after | You keep using it | You pay or lose access |
| Verified websites | Unlimited | Varies |
What Ahrefs Free gives you
- Site Explorer for your own site: the keywords you rank for, the pages that drive organic traffic and the sites that link to you.
- Site Audit, which Ahrefs says checks for 170+ technical and on-page SEO issues and tracks a Health Score over time.
- Web Analytics, a privacy-focused analytics tool with historical graphs, including AI traffic.
- Domain Rating and URL Rating for any site, plus raw versus rendered HTML comparisons through its toolbar.
- A Social Media Manager and AI Content Helper, which Ahrefs lists on the free account.
The verification catch
Site Explorer, Site Audit and Web Analytics only work on sites you verify you own. Ahrefs says verification is a quick process, and the Social Media Manager, AI Content Helper and toolbar work without it. So Ahrefs Free is excellent for your own website and useless for spying on a competitor's backlinks.
If you need more: the paid route
Ahrefs' help centre says that if you want something cheaper than its Lite plan, the Starter plan is the cheaper monthly option. Its Starter help article describes it as a plan for beginners who want to go beyond the free account, adding Keywords Explorer and research on sites you don't own.
| What you want to do | What fits |
|---|---|
| Audit and track your own site | Ahrefs Free |
| Research keywords and look at competitors | Starter plan, $29 a month as of October 2026 |
| Full toolset for client work or teams | Lite and above, see Ahrefs' pricing page |
Discounts and codes
Ahrefs is unusually clear here. Its help centre says it doesn't run one-off discounts or seasonal sales, including Black Friday, and it doesn't offer promotional or discount codes. It warns that codes you find on other websites aren't legitimate. The saving it does offer is on annual billing, which you can arrange by contacting support.
How to set up Ahrefs Free
- Sign up for Ahrefs Free with your email. No card is needed.
- Add your website as a project and verify ownership.
- Run a Site Audit and fix the most serious issues first.
- Check Site Explorer for the keywords you already rank for, and look for pages sitting just off page one.
- Add Web Analytics if you want a simple view of your traffic alongside the SEO data.
Is it worth paying for Ahrefs?
For a small business owner looking after one website, Ahrefs Free covers a surprising amount, and I'd use it for a month before paying for anything. If you do need competitor and keyword research, compare a few tools first. My Semrush vs Ahrefs comparison and my roundup of Ahrefs alternatives will help you choose.
Ahrefs Free versus the cheapest paid plans
Ahrefs' Starter help article compares the free account with Starter ($29) and Lite ($129). The tools it lists on Starter are the SEO Dashboard, Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker and the Ahrefs SEO Toolbar. The biggest practical jump from Free is being able to research keywords and sites you don't own.
| Plan | Who Ahrefs says it suits |
|---|---|
| Ahrefs Free | Website owners checking their own verified sites |
| Starter | Beginners going beyond the free account |
| Lite | Small businesses and personal projects |
| Standard | Freelance SEOs and marketing consultants |
| Advanced | Lean in-house marketing teams |
Ahrefs' pricing page also says extra users are charged per month on paid plans, starting at $40 a month per extra user, as of October 2026. If more than one person needs a login, count that in before you upgrade.

Free tools that don't need verification
- Social Media Manager: schedule and manage social posts from one place, track post metrics over time and get AI suggestions for angles, hashtags and calls to action.
- AI Content Helper: grade your content against competitors, fill topical gaps and keep AI writing consistent with your brand voice.
- SEO Toolbar: see Domain Rating and URL Rating for any site, compare raw and rendered HTML and get keyword ideas in the search results.
Ahrefs says these three work without verifying a website, so they're useful even before you've connected your own site.
My advice
Don't hunt for an Ahrefs trial or a discount code, because neither exists and the codes floating around are fake. Set up Ahrefs Free on your own site today, fix what the audit finds, and only move to Starter when you need keyword research or a look at competitors. That way you pay for Ahrefs when it's earning its keep, not while you're still learning it.
