Commercial auto insurance covers vehicles your business owns or uses for work, from a single van to a fleet of trucks. In the US you can buy it direct from an insurer, through a broker or matching service, or from a trucking specialist, and the rules on who needs cover vary by state and policy. Ten providers follow, in no particular order.
The moment a car, van or truck starts earning money for your business, the insurance question changes. Personal auto cover and commercial auto cover aren't the same thing, and the companies selling the second kind don't all sell it the same way.
The ten names below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and this is a US list. Every description comes from each company's own website, as of Nov 2026. I've left premiums out because they depend on your vehicles, drivers, state and type of work, and only a quote can tell you yours.

Insureon
Best for: Small businesses that want commercial auto quotes and to buy online, with a page explaining cover for legal bills, medical expenses and property damage.
Liberty Mutual

Progressive Commercial
Best for: Business owners wanting a commercial auto quote they can customise, alongside business liability and vehicle coverages from the same insurer.
The Hartford

Tivly
Best for: Owners who'd like commercial auto explained first and then to be matched with one of its insurance partners rather than shopping alone.
Travelers
Best for: Anyone who wants to read who needs commercial auto, what it covers and the extra coverage options before getting a quote.
Buying direct, through a broker or via a matching service
Not every name here sells you a policy the same way, and the pages say so.
Direct insurers. GEICO, The Hartford, Liberty Mutual, Progressive Commercial and Travelers each have a commercial auto page of their own, with a route to a quote.
Online and partner-backed. Next Insurance's page says NEXT is now ERGO NEXT Insurance, backed by Munich Re, and that ERGO NEXT partners with Progressive Insurance for commercial auto policies, so those two are closer than they look.
Brokers, matching and a broker-only platform. Insureon's page says you can get quotes and buy online. Tivly's page says it matches businesses with a network of partners. Cover Whale's page says it gives commercial auto brokers speed and risk management, so it's a platform you reach through a broker rather than one you buy from yourself.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Trucking. Nirvana's page is about trucking insurance with telematics and active safety solutions.
So decide whether you'd like to buy direct, through a broker or through a matching service. That one choice cuts the list down faster than anything else.
What a commercial auto policy can include
- Liability. Injuries to other people and damage to their property when your business vehicle is at fault.
- Physical damage. Collision and comprehensive cover for damage to your own vehicles.
- Medical payments. Medical bills for the driver and passengers after an accident.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist. Protection when the other driver can't pay for the damage they've caused.
- Hired and non-owned auto. Cover for rented vehicles, or employees' own cars, used for work.
What's included, and the limits, come from the policy wording, so read that rather than the summary on a homepage.
State rules, staff drivers and fleets
Who needs commercial auto cover, and how much, isn't the same everywhere. Requirements vary by state and by policy, so check your state's own rules on its official website and read the insurer's own pages on who needs cover alongside them.
If your staff drive for work, workers' compensation is a separate cover for employees hurt on the job, and my list of workers' comp providers covers where to get it. Running several vehicles? My roundup of fleet management software looks at tools for tracking vehicles and drivers.
Seven questions to ask before you buy
- Are you the insurer, a broker or a matching service?
- Do you write commercial auto in every state where my vehicles operate?
- Does the policy cover employees' own cars when they're used for work?
- Can I add or remove vehicles and drivers during the term?
- How do I report a claim, and who handles it?
- Do you offer telematics or safety programmes, and how is the data used?
- Can I add general liability or other business cover with the same company?
Do you make a commercial auto insurance product or quote service? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on insuring business vehicles
Work out how you want to buy before you compare brands. If you'd like one company handling everything, a direct insurer keeps it simple. If you'd rather see several options, a broker or matching service does the shopping for you. If you run trucks, a trucking specialist is worth a look alongside the big names. Whichever route you take, check your state's rules first and read the policy wording in full, because the cover you get is what the policy says, not what the homepage says.
This isn't insurance advice, and nothing here means any insurer will cover you. A licensed agent or broker is the right person to talk to about your business.

Frequently asked questions
What is commercial auto insurance?
It's insurance for vehicles your business owns or uses for work, such as cars, vans, trucks and trailers. It usually covers liability and can include damage to your own vehicles and medical payments.
Do I need commercial auto insurance if I use my own car for work?
It depends on how you use the car, your state and your personal policy. Ask your insurer or a licensed agent, because a personal policy may not cover business use.
What's the difference between commercial and personal auto insurance?
Personal auto insurance is for everyday driving. Commercial auto insurance is for vehicles used for business, and it can include cover for employees driving and for whole fleets.
Is trucking insurance the same as commercial auto insurance?
Trucking insurance is a specialist kind of commercial auto cover for trucking companies and freight. Some insurers focus on it, and others include trucks within their wider commercial auto range.
Can I buy commercial auto insurance online?
Yes, several insurers and agencies here let you get a quote and buy online. Others work through agents or brokers, so check each company's own page.
What's hired and non-owned auto insurance?
It's cover for vehicles your business rents or borrows, and for employees' own cars when they're used for work. It's often added to a commercial auto or business policy.
