Instagram Recently Deleted (2026): How Long Content Stays and How to Restore It

Recently deleted is the folder where Instagram holds the photos, videos, reels and stories you delete, and it keeps them for 30 days before deleting them for good, or up to 24 hours for stories that aren't in your stories archive. You restore them from Your activity, then Recently deleted, in the Instagram app on your phone, but deleted messages can't be restored at all.

So if someone on your team deleted the wrong post this morning, the odds are good. If it was three months ago, or it was a message, they aren't. Here's how the folder works as of Nov 2026, straight from Instagram Help.

What lands in Recently deleted

Instagram Help lists the content you can delete from your account:

  • Photos and videos from your profile and your Instagram story
  • Stories from your highlights and your story archive
  • Direct messages
  • Notes
  • Reels

When you delete something, Help says it's removed from your account immediately and moved to Recently deleted. Nobody else on Instagram can see it while it sits there. It's still covered by Instagram's Terms of Use and Privacy Policy during that time.

One small note from the same article: if you export your information from Instagram, the file won't include messages you've unsent.

The 30-day clock and the 24-hour story exception

Help gives two time limits, and the difference between them catches people out. Most deleted content stays for 30 days. Stories that aren't in your stories archive only stay for up to 24 hours. Here's how it breaks down:

ContentWhat happens when you delete itHow long you've got to restore it
Photos and videos on your profileRemoved straight away and moved to Recently deleted30 days
ReelsMoved to Recently deleted, under the Reels and videos tab30 days
Stories that are in your stories archiveMoved to Recently deleted, under the Stories tab30 days
Stories that aren't in your stories archiveMoved to Recently deletedUp to 24 hours
Direct messagesDeleted, but Help says deleted messages can't be restoredNo restore
NotesListed by Help as content you can deleteHelp's restore steps only cover posts, reels and videos, and stories

The archive is what decides which story rule applies to you. If your stories archive is switched on, a deleted story gets the full 30 days. If it's off, you've got a day at most. I've covered how the Instagram story archive works separately, including how to bring an old story back from it.

Treat 30 days as a hard line. Help says that if you can't see the content you want in Recently deleted, it may be older than 30 days, or 24 hours for stories. There's no second folder behind this one.

Restore a post, reel or story, step by step

This only works in the Instagram app. Help says the feature isn't available on computers and lists Android, iPhone and iPad app help instead. Make sure you're on the latest version of the app first, because Help says that's what you need to see recently deleted content. Then:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Below How you use Instagram, tap Your activity.
  4. Below Removed and archived content, tap Recently deleted. If you haven't deleted anything recently, you may not see the options that follow.
  5. At the top, tap the type of content: Posts, Reels and videos, or Stories.
  6. Tap the photo, video, reel or story you want back.
  7. Tap Options.
  8. Tap Restore, then tap Restore again to confirm.

Deleting for good uses the same route. At the last step, tap Delete, then Delete again. That removes it from Recently deleted before the 30 days are up, so only do it when you're sure.

What won't come back

Three things sit outside the safety net, and Help is clear on each one.

Messages. Direct messages are on Help's list of content you can delete, yet the recovery article says deleted messages on Instagram can't be restored. If a client thread matters, don't delete it to tidy your inbox.

Anything past the window. After 30 days, or 24 hours for stories outside your archive, the item is gone from Recently deleted and there's no restore button for it.

Things that never went through this folder. Drafts and whole accounts are separate questions. If you've lost an unposted reel, see recovering a deleted Instagram reel draft. If it's the whole account, that's a different process again, covered in recovering a deleted Instagram account.

After the 30 days: deleted, but not instantly gone

Here's the part that cuts both ways. Instagram Help says it may take up to 90 days to complete the deletion process after it begins. Copies of your content may stay after those 90 days in backup storage that Meta uses to recover from a disaster, a software error or another data loss event. Meta may also keep information for legal issues, terms violations or harm prevention.

For you, that means two honest things. You can't get a post back once it's out of Recently deleted, even though copies may still exist on Meta's side. And deleting something doesn't mean every trace of it vanishes on the day you press the button. If a post shouldn't have gone out, deleting it hides it from other people straight away, but that isn't the same as it being wiped.

What I'd do before anyone deletes a business post

I'd start by checking Recently deleted the same day anything goes missing. It's one of the few places on Instagram where speed decides the outcome, and for stories outside your archive the window is a day.

I'd switch on the stories archive for a business account, so a deleted story gets 30 days rather than 24 hours. And I'd skip deleting direct messages altogether unless you're certain you won't need them, because Help says there's no way back for those.

If you're clearing out old reels from your grid, it's worth reading how deleting reels from your profile works first, so the team knows they'll sit in Recently deleted for 30 days and can be pulled back if someone changes their mind.

If your team posts and deletes a lot and you want a simple routine so nothing important gets lost, that's the sort of social media workflow help I give. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
