Guest posting is a great way to get backlinks to your blog – it’s probably the biggest reason why most people are trying to get featured on different publications. For one, it helps with SEO (which I’ll get to next) and for another, it helps you get more traffic.
It won’t be huge amounts – but if you do it regularly and you target bigger websites with a lot of readers, you’ll definitely notice a spike in your traffic analytics.
Guest blogging builds backlinks – and backlinks are essential to SEO
There are several elements that will help your pages and blog posts rank high in search engines:
- The content is optimized for search engines
- The content is of high-quality
- Your website or blog has a high domain rating
- And of course, relevant backlinks from other websites and blogs
Backlinks are an extremely important part of SEO. There are a lot of variables in SEO, but when it comes to backlinks, the data is clear: pages with a lot of backlinks rank higher.
In fact, a recent study from Backlinko and Buzzsumo found that “the #1 result in Google has an average of 3.8x more backlinks than results #2 through #10.”

- Focus on sites that are relevant to your niche: backlinks from relevant websites are a lot more valuable than from a website that has nothing to do with your blog or business. Google is more interested in relevant backlinks and plus, you’re not reaching your target audience (which means less traffic and fewer leads!)
- Backlinks from high DA sites are more valuable: plus, you’re getting more exposure and more traffic if you get published on high DA sites with more readers
- Always read the guidelines before you pitch: most sites get a ton of pitches from guest bloggers – the bigger the site, the more they get. If you want yours to stand out and have a better chance of getting published, then respect the guidelines (and read them through – some publications even insert some Easter eggs to check if you actually read them or just skimmed through!)
- Link placement matters: if you can get a link in the body of guest post, try to include it as close to the top as possible, but only where it makes sense. Don’t place a link just anywhere though – it needs to be completely relevant (this way, it won’t be in danger of getting removed by the editor – plus, it’s better for SEO too)

Search for your niche with "write for us", "guest post guidelines" and "contribute an article", collect the domains, then judge each one on referring domains, real rankings in your niche and whether an editor replies, not on the authority badge printed on a list. A site with a few hundred referring domains and readers in your field is worth more than a big domain nobody visits.
