Canva Dream Lab is Canva's text-to-image generator, and you open it from the Homepage by selecting More, then Dream Lab, because it isn't inside the editor. Type a prompt, select Generate and you'll get four image options to pick from, refine with a follow-up instruction, or sharpen with Boost resolution. As of October 2026 generating, reference images and Boost resolution all use your AI allowance.
The catch: Boost resolution isn't Upscale, and extras use allowance
Dream Lab looks free and easy until you notice the small print. Canva says generating images, adding a reference image and using Boost resolution all consume AI allowance, and you'll get a notification whenever a feature needs it (source: Canva Help Center). Every regenerate and every boost comes out of the same monthly pot as the rest of Canva's premium AI tools.
The second trap is the name. Boost resolution makes Dream Lab images clearer and more detailed, and it's meant for AI-generated images. Upscale is a different tool, built for pixelated, low-resolution images. If your problem is a blurry phone photo, Dream Lab's boost isn't the button you want.
The third is location. Canva's own troubleshooting says the usual reason people can't find Dream Lab is that they're looking inside the editor, or they aren't on the Homepage at all.
How to generate images in Dream Lab
- On the Homepage, select More.
- Select Dream Lab.
- Enter a text prompt describing what you want.
- Optionally add a reference image to guide the look or composition, then use the reference options dropdown to choose how Canva should use it (the options may vary by rollout).
- Select Generate.
- Pick your favourite of the four options.
- Optionally describe an edit, such as 'make the car blue', to get an updated version.
- Optionally select Boost resolution.
You can stop at step six and drop the image into a design. Steps seven and eight are where Dream Lab earns its keep, but they're also where the allowance goes.
Editing, boosting and finding past images
- Edit image. Generate an image, select it, choose Edit image, describe the change and select Generate. This gives you more control than starting again from a new prompt.
- Boost resolution. Select the image you want to enhance, then select Boost resolution.
- History. Open Dream Lab and select History to see what you've made before.
If your previous creations seem to have vanished, you're probably looking in the wrong place. They're kept in Dream Lab's History, not in your designs or uploads.
Dream Lab vs Magic Media
These two get mixed up all the time, so here's how they differ according to Canva's help pages.
| Dream Lab | Magic Media | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Homepage, More, Dream Lab | Editor side panel |
| What it makes | Images | Images, graphics, 4-second videos and 3D elements |
| Per prompt | Up to four options | A set you can regenerate or extend with Generate more like this |
| Reference image | Yes, with reference options | Yes, under Styles |
| Saved history | Yes | Results go into your design |

Prompts that get better Dream Lab results
Canva's tips for Dream Lab are short and practical, and its wider prompting guide adds a couple more.
- Be specific. Include style, colours, lighting and layout.
- Describe the subject and composition directly, for example 'top-down flat lay' or 'portrait with soft studio lighting'.
- Start with the image's purpose, such as a product launch poster or a webinar invite.
- Describe the mood and vibe: bold, pastel, lively, calm.
- Generate variations, then refine your prompt based on what you like or dislike in the results.
- With a reference image, try different reference options to control how closely the result follows it.
Here's one of Canva's own examples, which shows how much detail it expects:

When Dream Lab won't work
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Image didn't generate | Unstable internet, or the prompt breaks Canva's content guidelines | Check your connection, try again, and remove anything that might be restricted |
| Can't find Dream Lab | You're in the editor, or an admin has turned it off | Go to Homepage, then More; if it's still missing, ask your admin |
| Old images missing | Looking in the wrong place | Open Dream Lab and select History |
If you're on a team, enterprise or education account, Dream Lab may be switched off by your organisation's settings. Team and Enterprise members should ask their team admin, and Education users should ask their education admin or teacher.
Can you use Dream Lab images commercially?
Canva's honest answer is that there's no easy answer, because copyright law treats AI work differently from country to country. You own what you create with Dream Lab as long as you follow Canva's Terms, but whether it's copyrightable depends on where you are, and you allow Canva to host your images. Recognisable characters and brands may be protected, and Canva can't give you permission to use them.
All AI content has to follow Canva's Acceptable Use Policy. Canva runs automated checks on prompts and images to block or flag anything inappropriate, and you can report an unsafe image with the Report button in the app.
I've covered the related side in the guide on how to duplicate a page in Canva.
My verdict on Dream Lab
I'd use Dream Lab when I want choice, because four options per prompt makes it easy to see what's working. I'd keep reference images and Boost resolution for the image I'm going to publish, since both use allowance. And if you're on Canva Free, check what the free plan includes before you burn through your monthly uses on drafts. For everything else Canva AI can do, my Canva AI guide is the place to start.
