There isn't one Canva AI image generator, there are five doors: Canva AI on the homepage, Magic Media in the editor side panel, Dream Lab under More on the homepage, the DALL-E and Imagen apps, and the standalone AI Image Generator page that works without opening a design. As of October 2026 they all count against the same monthly AI allowance, so pick the door by where you want the image to end up, then pick a quality tier.
The catch: five doors, one AI allowance
Most people search for one tool and find five. That's why the button you saw in a tutorial often isn't where you're looking. Canva AI, Magic Media, Dream Lab, the third-party apps and the standalone pages all turn a text prompt into an image, but they live in different places and hand you the result in different ways.
The part that matters more is the allowance. Canva says all premium AI tools share a single monthly allowance, and that image and video generation use more of it than simpler tools like Background Generator and Magic Formulas (source: Canva Help Center). So an afternoon of rough drafts on the standalone page eats into the same pot you'll need later in the editor. Canva's own advice is to write clear prompts so you don't have to regenerate.
Canva also says that if you need a generic image, or one that already exists, you should search the media library first. A stock photo of a laptop on a desk doesn't need AI, and it won't touch your allowance.
Which Canva image route fits which job
| Route | Where you find it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Canva AI | Homepage, select Canva AI | Chatting your way to an image and carrying on designing |
| Magic Media | Editor side panel, or Apps then search Magic Media | Images, graphics, short videos and 3D dropped straight into the design you're in |
| Dream Lab | Homepage, More, then Dream Lab (not inside the editor) | Four options per prompt, reference images and a saved History |
| DALL-E and Imagen apps | Canva's image generation apps | Trying another model; a premium tool with limited usage on paid plans |
| AI Image Generator page | Its own page, or Quick Tools on the homepage | One quick image without opening a design; 1 to 4 images per run |
If you're halfway through a design, Magic Media is the shortest path because the image lands on your page. If you want options to compare side by side, Dream Lab is built for that, and my Dream Lab walkthrough covers its steps. If you just want one picture to download, the standalone page is quickest.
How to generate an image with Magic Media
- On the editor side panel, click Magic Media. If you can't see it, go to Apps and search for Magic Media.
- Under the Images tab, describe what you'd like to create, or select Inspire me for sample prompts.
- Select Styles and choose photography, digital art or fine art. You can also upload a reference image here.
- Choose your layout: square, wide or portrait.
- Select Generate images. Generate again gives you a fresh set, and More, then Generate more like this, gives you similar ones.
- Select the image you like to add it to your design.
The other tabs follow the same pattern. Graphics offers simple, artistic or detailed styles. Videos always come out 4 seconds long. The 3D tab makes 3D elements you can use in presentations, videos, whiteboards, social media and websites, but they aren't supported in Docs, Sheets or Email yet.
How to use the standalone AI Image Generator page
This is the one most people land on from Google, and it runs without the editor at all.
- Open the AI Image Generator page, or Quick Tools on the Canva homepage.
- Enter your prompt, or upload a photo on pages that support it.
- Select Create, then sign in or create a Canva account when prompted.
- Wait while Canva generates; you may see 1 to 4 images.
- Optionally describe a change and select Regenerate, and pick an art style and aspect ratio from the dropdowns.
- Choose Download, Open in editor or Save to Canva.
Two quirks are worth knowing. Open in editor starts a new design in a new browser tab and leaves the generator open in the first one. And Quick Tools only shows up in the Canva desktop app and the desktop browser. The product page lists styles such as Photo, Vibrant, 3D Render, Cinematic, Pop Art, Bokeh, Sketch, Vector and Minimalist. There are dozens of sister pages too, and my map of Canva's AI generator pages lists them all.
Standard, Premium and Ultra quality tiers
Canva lets you choose the quality level for AI photos and videos, and the tier changes how fast your allowance goes.
| Tier | Who gets it | Effect on your allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Everyone | Uses less; doesn't count at all on paid plans, does count on Canva Free |
| Premium | Everyone (the default) | Balanced quality, counts toward your allowance |
| Ultra | Paid plans only | Highest quality for photos and videos, uses allowance fastest |
To switch tiers in the editor, open Elements, select the plus icon in the search bar to open Attachments, then choose AI quality. On the homepage it's the same plus icon in the Canva AI search box. On a free plan you'll see Ultra with a Pro badge.
Watch the silent switch. Graphics, audio, 3D, forms, code, charts and sheets only run on Premium, so if you've chosen Ultra, Canva quietly uses Premium for those and shows a message saying so. Your Ultra setting still applies to photos and videos.

How many AI images each Canva plan gives you
Canva's AI access page sets out the monthly allowance per plan. These are estimates, and complex prompts use more, so your own number will vary.
| Plan | Monthly AI allowance |
|---|---|
| Canva Free and Pro Lite | Up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium AI tools; no Ultra |
| Canva Pro, Teams and Nonprofits | Up to 200 Premium uses, or up to 20 Ultra uses; Standard tools don't count |
| Canva Business and Enterprise | Up to 400 Premium uses, or up to 40 Ultra uses |
| Canva Education | Up to 200 Premium uses, or up to 20 Ultra uses |
| Pro and Business trials | Up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium; no Ultra |
On team plans each member has their own allowance, and it isn't pooled. Paid allowances reset on your billing date, monthly even if you pay yearly, while Canva Free resets at midnight UTC on the first of each month. If your AI options go grey, you've hit the limit. If you're weighing up whether Canva's free plan is enough, that 20-use ceiling is the number to plan around.
Who owns the images, and what gets blocked
Canva's help page on the DALL-E and Imagen apps says that, between you and Canva, you own the images you make as long as you follow its Terms. It also says that doesn't make you the copyright owner or give you exclusive rights, because how copyright treats AI work is an open question that varies by country. Under the Terms you give Canva the right to host your images and use them to market its products.
Recognisable characters and brands may be protected by copyright or trademarks, and Canva can't give you permission to use them. Prompts are reviewed automatically for terms that might produce inappropriate images, and every app has a Report button.
My verdict on Canva's AI image generator
I'd use Magic Media when I'm already in a design, the standalone page for a one-off image, and Dream Lab when I want options. On Canva Free, 20 uses goes quickly, so write one specific prompt rather than ten lazy ones. On a paid plan, draft on Standard, which doesn't touch your allowance, and save Premium or Ultra for the image you'll publish. Frequently asked questions
Why can't I find Magic Media in the editor?
Go to Apps and search for Magic Media. On a team, an admin, teacher or brand designer can limit access, and some members won't see it because of their language settings.
Can I give the Canva image generator a reference image?
Yes. In Magic Media you can upload one under Styles, Dream Lab has its own reference options, and the standalone pages accept an uploaded photo on pages that support it.
Which AI models does Canva use for images?
Canva offers DALL-E by OpenAI and Imagen by Google Cloud as image generation apps, alongside its own Magic Media, Dream Lab and Canva AI tools.
Can I make images of a celebrity or a famous character?
Canva warns that recognisable characters and brands may be protected, and you'd need permission from the rights owner, which Canva can't give you.
