Claude Max is Anthropic's higher-usage plan for individual people who use Claude a lot, and it comes in two tiers: Max 5x, with five times the Pro per-session usage, and Max 20x, with twenty times. As of October 2026 it also bundles Claude Code, priority access to new models and features, and monthly credits for the Claude API.
The catch: Max is more usage, never unlimited
The word Max makes people assume there's no ceiling. There is. Anthropic's help page is clear that Max still has limits, and that it may apply weekly and monthly caps, or limits on particular models and features, at its discretion.
Two limits shape your day. The session limit resets every five hours. On top of that there's a weekly limit across all models, and it resets at a fixed time assigned to your account, not from the moment you start using Claude. That second detail catches people out: if you hit the weekly limit, waiting a few hours won't help, because the reset is tied to your account's set time.
If you have a limit reset available, it can restore either the five-hour session limit or the weekly limit to full, so it's worth saving for the weekly one if that's the wall you usually hit. For the detail on how each limit is counted, see my guide to how Claude's usage limits work.
Max 5x and Max 20x side by side
Here are the two tiers as Anthropic lists them, as of October 2026. Prices are for web subscriptions; mobile pricing may vary by app platform, and Max is billed monthly only.
| Tier | Usage | Web price | Anthropic says it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max 5x | 5x Pro per-session usage | $100 per month | Frequent users on a variety of tasks |
| Max 20x | 20x Pro per-session usage | $200 per month | Daily users who work with Claude on most tasks |
The multiplier is the whole difference between the two. What you're choosing is how much room you get before a session limit stops you. If you're still deciding whether you need Max at all, my Pro and Max comparison lays out where Pro runs out.
What else comes in the Max subscription
- Priority access to new models and features.
- Claude Code in the same subscription, so you don't need a separate plan to use it.
- Longer multi-step tasks that keep running in the background.
- Monthly API credits for the Claude API, which Anthropic includes with Max and Team plans.
The background tasks point is easy to skim past. On Max, longer multi-step tasks keep running in the background, so you can hand Claude a bigger job and get on with something else instead of watching it work. Priority access means new models and features reach Max users early, which matters if you like trying things as soon as they land.
Max is built for individual consumers. If you're buying for a group, Team and Enterprise are separate plans for organisations, and your plan works across web, desktop and mobile with the same account rather than per device.
Max doesn't pay for the API, apart from the credits
This is the one that surprises developers. Claude paid plans and the Claude Console, where the API lives, are separate products. A paid subscription doesn't pay for API usage, which is billed separately through the Console. The exception is the monthly API credits included with Max and Team.
So if you build an app on the Claude API, your Max subscription covers your chats and Claude Code, the monthly credits cover some API use, and anything beyond that is a separate Console bill. If coding is your main reason for Max, the Claude Code plan breakdown goes deeper on that side.
Upgrading, billing and discounts
The billing rules are where support questions pile up. Here's what Anthropic says, as of October 2026.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Moving up a tier is prorated for the rest of your billing cycle.
- From an annual Pro plan, any remaining balance larger than the Max price becomes an account credit, but only if your billing address matches the earlier subscription.
- On Google Play, you're charged the full new price and the unused value of your old plan becomes extra days.
- Discounts: there's no standard discount for Pro or Max, including both Max tiers. Anthropic occasionally runs limited promotions, and support can't issue one on request.
- Free option: the free version of Claude stays available at claude.ai if you decide Max isn't for you.
The billing address rule is the quiet trap. If you moved house or changed cards since you bought annual Pro, check your billing address before you upgrade, or you may not see that leftover balance as a credit.
My verdict on Claude Max
I'd pick Max 5x if you use Claude most days across a mix of writing, research and planning and keep bumping into Pro's session limit. I'd go to Max 20x only if Claude is part of almost everything you do, including long Claude Code sessions. I'd skip Max if you hit limits once a week at most, because Pro will do the job. And whichever tier you choose, remember it raises the ceiling without removing it, and the weekly reset runs on your account's clock, not yours.
