Claude Code Pricing: What It Costs on Pro, Max, Team and the API

Claude Code doesn't have its own price tag. It comes with a paid Claude plan: Pro costs $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front) or $20 monthly, and Max costs $100 a month for 5x Pro's usage or $200 for 20x, as of October 2026. Teams pay per seat, and developers can pay by usage through the Claude API instead.

That's the short version, and it's what Anthropic's own pricing page and help centre say. The longer version matters more, because how you sign in decides what you pay. Sign in with your Claude subscription and Claude Code uses your plan's allowance. Leave an API key lying around on your computer and it bills you at API rates instead. Here's how each option works, checked on Anthropic's own pages as of October 2026.

Claude Code prices by plan

All figures below are in US dollars and come from claude.com/pricing. Anthropic notes that prices don't include tax and that plans can change.

How Claude Code works with a Pro or Max subscription

Anthropic's help article is clear that one subscription covers both products. With Pro or Max you get Claude on the web, desktop and mobile apps, plus Claude Code, and all of it draws from the same usage limits. Claude Code runs inside Claude Desktop (the Code tab), in your terminal, and in IDEs including VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains tools such as IntelliJ and PyCharm.

  1. Make sure you've got an active Pro or Max plan. If not, upgrade at claude.ai/upgrade.
  2. Download Claude Desktop, sign in, and open the Code tab. Anthropic recommends this route because there's nothing else to install.
  3. If you'd rather use the terminal, follow the Claude Code quickstart in Anthropic's docs and sign in with the same Claude login when it asks.
  4. Already signed in through Claude Console pay-as-you-go? Run /login inside Claude Code to switch to your subscription.
  5. Check what's left of your allowance any time with the /status command.

The setting that quietly bills you API rates

This is the detail I'd want every business owner to know before they start. Anthropic's help centre warns that if you have an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable set on your computer, Claude Code uses that key instead of your Claude subscription. You're then charged for API usage rather than using the allowance you've already paid for. If a developer set up your machine, or you followed an old tutorial, check for it.

The same article explains that Claude Code may offer to carry on with API credits when you hit a limit. If you want to stay strictly inside your plan, decline that option, wait for the reset, and make sure you've logged in with only your Pro or Max credentials. Auto-reload of API credits is a separate setting in your Claude Console billing page, not in Claude Code.

Usage limits: what happens when you run out

Both Pro and Max have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit, and Max adds a separate weekly limit for Fable. Everything you do in Claude and Claude Code counts against the same pot, so a long morning of chat leaves less for coding in the afternoon.

  • Upgrade: Pro to Max 5x, or Max 5x to Max 20x, if you hit limits often.
  • Turn on usage credits to keep going after a session or weekly limit.
  • Switch to a Claude Console account and buy API credits for an intensive sprint.
  • Wait for your limits to reset.

There's also a small wrap-up allowance. If you hit the five-hour limit while Claude Code is mid-response, it may keep working briefly to finish the step, and you'll see "Usage limit reached" with a wrapping-up note. Anthropic says this applies up to once per weekly period on Pro, and each time you reach a five-hour limit on Max. It's rolling out gradually, so you may not see it yet.

Max plan API credits don't cover Claude Code

Max comes with monthly API credits for building on the Claude Platform; the pricing page lists $100 to $200 a month depending on tier. It's easy to assume those credits top up Claude Code. They don't: Anthropic's help article says monthly API credits included with Max can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps, including for usage credits.

Billing details worth knowing before you upgrade

  • Max is monthly only. Pro offers monthly or annual billing.
  • Prices on Anthropic's Max help page are for web subscriptions; mobile pricing may differ by app store.
  • Moving up a Max tier is charged pro rata for the rest of your billing cycle.
  • If the balance left on an annual Pro plan is more than the Max price, Anthropic credits it to your account, as long as the billing address matches.
  • Anthropic says it doesn't offer standing discounts on Pro or Max, and its support team can't issue coupons.

Which option should you pick?

If you're a business owner trying Claude Code for small automations, a website tweak or a script to tidy spreadsheets, start on Pro. You'll find out quickly whether the limits bite. If Claude Code becomes part of your daily work, Max 5x is the next step, and Max 20x is for people who live in it. Teams that need central billing and admin controls should look at Team seats. The API route suits developers who want to pay only for what they run. For the full plan comparison across chat and coding, see this breakdown of every Claude plan and what it includes.

Verdict: is Claude Code good value?

Claude Code is good value because it isn't a separate bill: if you already pay for Pro, you've already got it. The thing that catches people out isn't the price, it's the billing route. Sign in with your subscription, check there's no API key set on your machine, and keep an eye on /status. Do those three things and you'll never get a surprise invoice.
