Discord Quests: How They Work, What You Earn and Why They're Ads

Discord Quests are short tasks, such as playing a game or watching a trailer, that earn you rewards like Orbs, Avatar Decorations or game codes. Discord's own help describes them as a rewarded ad format: you get the reward, and the advertiser gets your attention.

That's the catch worth knowing before you start. A Quest is advertising, not a giveaway. You're rewarded for engaging with a brand's game or video. Quests are opt-in and look different from the rest of Discord, so you can tell them apart. Two groups can't earn at all: Linux players and Meta VR headset users. And if you're 13 to 17, you're capped at three Quests a day.

The types of Discord Quest

Quest typeWhat you doWatch out for
Play (time)Play the game for a set time, such as 15 minutes, with the desktop app openProgress is tracked on desktop
Play (stream)Stream the game to at least one friend in a voice channelNeeds the desktop app
Play (action)Link your game account and finish an in-game action, such as playing 3 matchesRewards can take up to 36 hours
VideoWatch a video or trailer in the desktop app or browserPauses if you switch windows, but saves progress

That 36-hour delay on linked-game Quests catches people out. The game developer sends Discord the data, and processing can hold up your reward for up to 36 hours after you've done the action. If you're stuck on a stream Quest, my guide to screen sharing and Go Live on Discord covers the streaming side.

How to find and start a Quest

  1. On desktop, look for the Quest bar at the bottom left. It only shows when you're eligible.
  2. Or go to Discover then Quests to open Quest Home.
  3. Pick a Quest and press Accept Quest for a Play Quest, or Start Video Quest for a Video Quest.
  4. Complete it, then claim your reward.

Mobile Quests are in beta and limited to specific Quests. You'll find them under Settings then Quest.

What you earn

  • Partner game rewards arrive as a redemption code. You see it when you claim, and you also get an email with the redemption details.
  • Discord rewards, such as Avatar Decorations and Orbs, are added to your account when you claim.
  • Nitro subscribers keep Quest Avatar Decorations for longer and get 1.2x Orbs on Orb Quests, which is still in beta.

Discord sets the number of Orbs per Quest and says it can change. Orbs themselves have their own rules about what they can and can't buy, which is a separate topic.

The limits Discord puts on Quests

  • Each Quest can only be completed once per account.
  • Ages 13 to 17 can complete three Quests a day. A 24-hour countdown starts from the third, and rewards already earned can still be claimed.
  • Quests aren't available in some regions.
  • You can't earn Quest rewards on Linux.
  • Quests aren't supported on Meta VR headsets.
  • Many Quests disappear once their window ends, so don't leave one half-finished.

The Quests badge

The Quests badge only appears if you completed a Quest after 24 April 2024. If you did and your progress bar seems stuck, restart the app and update it. If you'd rather the badge didn't show at all, see my guide to hiding Discord badges.

How to hide Quests or opt out

You've got two controls. Use Hide This on an individual in-app promotion to get rid of that one. To stop personalised Quest promotion, opt out in your Data & Privacy settings. You can still do Quests from Quest Home after opting out, so you don't lose access.

My verdict on Quests

If a Quest is for a game you'd play anyway, it's free Orbs or a free in-game item for something you were going to do. Just go in knowing it's an ad, and be careful with linked-game Quests, because you're connecting your game account to get the reward. I wouldn't play something I didn't enjoy just for Orbs. And if you're weighing up Quests against paying for perks, what Discord gives you for free is a good place to start.
