An AI creator on Instagram usually means a creator AI: an AI version of a creator, built with Meta's tools, that replies to messages for them. Its replies are labelled "AI · creator name" in the chat, so if you see that label, you're talking to the creator's AI, not to the person.
Everything on this page comes from Instagram's own Help Center article on AI auto replies, read as of October 2026. Meta says the feature is being introduced gradually and only works in the Instagram mobile app, so not every creator has it yet.
The part people don't expect: a creator AI isn't a fan account or a fake profile. It runs inside the real creator's account, it answers from content the creator chose, and the creator can step into the chat at any moment. When they do, the AI pauses and only starts replying again after a while has passed.
How to tell if you're chatting with a creator's AI
- Every reply from the AI carries the label "AI" followed by the creator's name.
- Meta says both people in the chat can see that label.
- The AI only answers chats started by the audience the creator selected, so you're most likely to meet it when you message a creator who doesn't follow you back.
- The creator can still read everything and reply in person whenever they like.
What a creator AI knows and who it talks to
The creator sets it up, and Meta's Help Center describes three main controls.
| Control | What the creator can do |
|---|---|
| Knowledge | Choose which Instagram and Threads content the AI uses for its answers, and add new facts and links it can share |
| Topics to avoid | List subjects the AI should try not to discuss |
| Audience | Let it reply to anyone they don't follow, to followers they don't follow back, or only to people they choose, and change this at any time |
Messages it answers stay in their normal inbox folders. Message requests, including hidden ones, stay in Message Requests. The creator can filter by Your AI replied to see every conversation the AI handled in one place, read what fans are asking and jump in.
If you're the creator, the label also protects you. Meta marks every auto reply as coming from your AI, so fans can see which answers were automated. And if it starts handling chats you'd rather take yourself, you can change who the AI talks to at any time.
Why creators switch it on
Meta pitches it as a way to save time and reach more fans. The AI can answer frequently asked questions and recommend products, while the creator keeps the meaningful conversations for themselves. For a creator who gets the same few questions every day about a product link, a discount or how to work together, that's a real time saving. It also means a fan who messages late at night gets an answer straight away instead of waiting for the creator to wake up.
The limits Meta spells out
Meta's own article is unusually frank about what can go wrong. Before you trust an answer from a creator AI, know these:
- It can be wrong. Meta says messages generated by AI may not be accurate or appropriate.
- It's trained in English. Meta says the AIs have only been trained in English, so answers in other languages may be lower quality.
- The chat isn't end-to-end encrypted. Chats with AIs, including messages mentioning Meta AI, aren't end-to-end encrypted.
- Meta may use the messages. Meta says it may collect and use information such as your messages to improve its AI models.
- It isn't a professional. Custom AIs aren't licensed experts, and Meta says you shouldn't rely on them for medical, psychological, financial or legal advice.
Whatever the creator feeds it must also follow Instagram's Community Guidelines and Terms of Use.

How creators set one up
You need a professional account first, which Meta recommends for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers. Meta's Help Center then has separate articles for building a creator AI, turning on AI auto replies and improving it over time, all in the Instagram app. Because the roll-out is gradual, the option may simply not appear for you yet.
If you're comparing labels, the digital creator label on Instagram is the other half of the picture.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Should you use one?
If you're a creator or a small business owner drowning in repeat DMs, it's worth a trial on a narrow audience first, such as people you don't follow. Feed it only content you're happy to be quoted on, list your no-go topics, and check the Your AI replied filter every day for the first week. If it gets something wrong, that's your name on the label.
If you're a fan or a customer, treat an AI reply as a helpful signpost, not a promise. Anything that matters, such as a price, a delivery date or a collaboration agreement, should come from the person. Frequently asked questions
What does AI next to a name mean on Instagram?
It means the reply came from that creator's AI, set up with Meta's creator AI tools, not from the creator in person. Both people in the chat see the label.
Is an AI creator a real person?
No. A creator AI replies on behalf of a real creator, using content they chose. The creator can read the chat and reply themselves at any time.
Are chats with a creator AI private?
They're not end-to-end encrypted, and Meta says it may use messages to improve its AI models.
Who can a creator AI reply to?
Only the audience the creator picks: people they don't follow, followers they don't follow back, or specific people they choose.
Can the creator still reply after their AI has answered?
Yes. Meta says creators can still see and reply to messages directly after their AI has replied, and the AI pauses while the creator is responding.
Can a creator AI recommend products?
Yes. Meta says the AI can answer frequently asked questions and recommend products, using the content, facts and links the creator gave it.
Why can't I turn on AI auto replies?
Meta says the feature is being introduced gradually and only works in the Instagram mobile app, so it may not be available to you yet.
