How to Turn Off Read Receipts on Instagram (Steps and Limits)

To turn off read receipts on Instagram, open your profile menu, go to Settings and privacy, find the messages settings and switch off Show read receipts. Some app versions also let you do it for a single chat. Instagram's help centre notes limits for groups and message requests, and menus vary by version.

That little "Seen" under your message can feel like a pressure cooker. Someone sends a direct message, you open it, and now they know you've read it and haven't replied. If you handle customer enquiries through Instagram DMs, that pressure is real, and you may want some breathing room before you answer.

Instagram lets you switch read receipts off. This guide follows the wording of Instagram's own help centre, which also notes that the setting has some limits in groups and message requests. Instagram moves its menus around between app versions, so if a label differs on your phone, look for the closest match. If you'd also like to hide when you're online, my guide to turning off activity status on Instagram is the companion to this one.

What read receipts on Instagram show

A read receipt is the "Seen" label that appears under a direct message once the other person has opened the chat and viewed it. It's a simple signal that you've read the message. It doesn't say you've understood it, agreed with it or plan to answer.

For a business, that signal cuts both ways. A customer who sees "Seen" with no reply can read it as being ignored. On the other side, you might not want a pushy contact to know you've looked at their message while you decide how to respond.

How to turn off read receipts on Instagram

The route below is the one Instagram's help centre describes, though labels vary by app version:

  1. Open Instagram and tap your profile picture at the bottom right.
  2. Tap the menu icon at the top right, then open Settings and privacy.
  3. Find the messages section, which's usually called Messages and story replies.
  4. Open Message controls, and look for Show read receipts.
  5. Switch Show read receipts off.

Once it's off, people shouldn't see a "Seen" label when you open their messages. Instagram's help page explains that the setting is one you control from your own account, so you don't need to ask anyone else to change anything.

Turning off Instagram read receipts for one chat only

Some versions of the app also let you manage read receipts for an individual conversation. If yours does, you can leave the setting on for most people and switch it off for one chat:

  1. Open the conversation in your direct messages.
  2. Tap the person's or group's name at the top of the chat.
  3. Look for the read receipts option in the chat's settings and turn it off.

If you don't see that option, your app version may not include it yet, and the main setting above is the one to use. Instagram releases features in stages, so a friend's phone can show something yours doesn't.

What switching off Instagram read receipts can't hide

Instagram's own help article points out that read receipts work differently in certain places. Here's what I'd keep in mind:

  • Group chats and message requests. The help centre mentions limits for these, so don't assume the setting behaves the same way everywhere. Check what the app tells you on each screen.
  • It may work both ways. Instagram describes read receipts as something shared between people. Read what the settings screen says, because turning yours off can mean you can't see receipts from others either.
  • Other clues remain. People can still see when you reply, and if you leave a reaction on a message they'll notice that too.
  • Business tools differ. If your account is linked to other messaging tools, those may show their own indicators.

In short, the setting hides the "Seen" label. It doesn't make you invisible.

When your Instagram read receipts setting is missing or won't change

If you can't find the toggle, or it flips back, work through this list:

  • Update Instagram. Older versions may not have the option, or may place it somewhere else.
  • Look under both Settings and privacy and the messages area. Meta has renamed and moved these menus more than once.
  • Check the account type. Business and professional accounts sometimes show different message settings, particularly if messages are routed through other tools.
  • Restart the app. Close it fully, reopen it and look again.
  • Try a message request separately. Because of the limits mentioned above, a request from someone you don't follow might behave differently.

If a message looks stuck on your end, my piece on what to do when an Instagram story is unavailable covers a similar kind of glitch.

Handling Instagram direct messages without read receipts

Switching read receipts off is only half the job. If you use Instagram to talk to customers, a few habits make your replies feel dependable:

  • Set aside a short window each day to answer messages, rather than reacting to every notification.
  • Use a saved reply or a short holding message when you can't give a full answer yet, so people know you've got it.
  • Keep your inbox tidy. My walkthrough on deleting old Instagram direct messages helps when it's getting crowded.
  • Don't leave an obviously urgent customer message sitting for days. No setting can hide a silence that long.
  • Use your bio or highlights to say how quickly you normally reply.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn off read receipts on Instagram?

Go to your profile, open the menu, choose Settings and privacy, then the messages area and switch off Show read receipts. Menus vary by app version, so look for the closest label.

Will people still know I've read their message?

They shouldn't see a "Seen" label once the setting is off, but they'll still see your reply and any reactions you add.

Can I turn off read receipts for just one person?

Some app versions let you manage read receipts inside an individual chat. If you don't see the option, use the main setting instead.

Do read receipts work differently in group chats?

Instagram's help centre says there are limits for groups and message requests, so check the wording on the screen rather than assuming the same behaviour.

Why can't I find the read receipts setting?

Your app may need updating, or the menu may have a different name on your version. Update Instagram, restart it and check both Settings and privacy and the messages settings.
