A dog name generator suggests names for a puppy or rescue dog, filtered by sex, breed, size, coat colour, personality or theme. The better ones let you describe your own dog rather than handing you the same top hundred everyone sees. Ten options follow, in no particular order, with tips for picking a name your dog will answer to.
A new puppy usually arrives with a temporary name from the breeder or the rescue, and the family argument starts in the car on the way home.
The ten generators below cover boy and girl names, names by breed and coat colour, and AI tools that read a description of your own dog. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. Once the name's settled, my Instagram caption generator helps with the first puppy post.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the tool's own page before you sign up.

The UK microchip rule every new puppy owner needs
GOV.UK says all dogs in the UK must be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they're 8 weeks old, and owners can be fined if a dog isn't microchipped when it needs to be.
Most puppies are chipped before they leave the breeder, so the record starts with the breeder's details. Once your puppy is home, update the database with your own details and your dog's new name. If your dog ever goes missing, that record is how you're reunited.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
How to choose a dog name your dog will answer to
- Keep it to one or two syllables.
- Make sure it doesn't sound like sit, stay, down or no.
- Say it in a happy voice and a firm voice; it should work in both.
- Check it doesn't match another pet or family member.
- Use it for a week before you decide, and watch whether your dog responds.
Naming a horse is its own task, with barn names and show names to think about, and my horse name guide covers it.
Names by breed, size and coat
Breed and size shape what sounds natural. A tiny dog can carry a grand name for fun, while a big dog called Biscuit gets a smile at the park. Coat colour is the quickest starting point if you're stuck, though it's also the most common, so expect to meet other dogs called Shadow or Pepper.
Rescue dogs may already know a name. If yours does, a new name with a similar sound helps the switch. While you're settling in, my guide to why dogs eat grass answers one of the first questions new owners ask.
Dog naming mistakes
- Names that sound like commands. Kit sounds like sit, and Bo sounds like no.
- Long names nobody uses. Your dog will end up with a nickname anyway.
- Names you'd be shy to call at the park. You'll be shouting it in public.
- Changing the name every few days. It confuses a puppy that's still learning.
Signs the name is working
- Your dog looks up when you say it.
- The whole family says it the same way.
- It doesn't get mixed up with a command.
- You're happy calling it across a park.

My plain advice on naming your dog
Let a generator throw out dozens of ideas, then test the shortlist on your dog, not just on the family. The right name is short, clear and easy to say in a cheerful voice.
Once you've chosen, update the microchip record straight away, because the database is what a vet or rescue centre checks if your dog is ever lost.
