AI Cat Name Generators (2026): 10 Tools Compared

A cat name generator suggests names for a kitten or adult cat, filtered by sex, coat colour, personality, language or theme. Some ask a few questions about your cat; others help breeders build pedigree names around a cattery prefix. Ten options follow, in no particular order, with tips for picking a name that suits your cat.

Cats are famous for ignoring their names, which is one reason people take so long to choose one. You want a name you'll enjoy saying even when nobody comes.

The ten generators below cover cute, funny and royal names, names from other languages, pedigree names for breeders and AI tools that read a description of your own cat. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. For keeping a new cat busy while you work, my guide to interactive cat toys has ideas.

Cat name generators at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the tool's own page before you sign up.

The England microchip deadline for cats

GOV.UK says that if you live in England your cat must be microchipped and registered on a database by the time it's 20 weeks old. That includes cats that usually stay indoors, and owners can be fined if a cat isn't chipped when it needs to be.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Twenty weeks gives you time to live with a kitten and find the name that fits, but the database record is what a vet or rescue centre checks if your cat goes missing. Keep your details and your cat's name up to date there once you've chosen.

How to find a name that suits your cat

  1. Watch your cat for a few days before you decide.
  2. Pick a name with a clear sound; many cats respond best to short names.
  3. Try it at feeding time, when your cat is already paying attention.
  4. Check it doesn't sound like another pet's name in the house.
  5. Make sure the whole household is happy to use it.

Pedigree names and pet names

Pedigree kittens often carry two names: a registered name built around the breeder's cattery prefix, and a short pet name used at home. If you're a breeder, plan the registered names for a whole litter at once so they share a theme.

For a pet cat, the everyday name is the only one that matters. Coat colour, personality and the food they beg for are the usual starting points. If you'd like a fun picture of your new cat to share, my prompts for turning a pet photo into a cartoon are a quick win.

Cat naming mistakes new owners make

  • Choosing before you meet the cat. A shy cat called Tiger can feel wrong.
  • Names that sound like no or stop. They mix up the messages.
  • Very long names. They shrink to a nickname within a week.
  • Forgetting the microchip record. Keep your details up to date there.

Signs you've picked the right cat name

  • Your cat's ears turn when you say it.
  • It suits the cat's personality.
  • Everyone at home says it the same way.
  • Visitors guess it suits the cat.

My plain advice on naming your cat

Give your cat a few days to show you who they are, then use a generator to find names that match. The best cat names are short, easy to say and a little bit affectionate.

If you live in England, get your cat chipped and registered before twenty weeks, and keep the record up to date with the name you choose.
