A horse name generator suggests names for a horse, pony or foal, from short barn names to longer show names and names built from the sire and dam. Some draw on popular names riders chose; others follow show-ring habits. If the horse might race, check the registry rules first. Ten options follow, in no particular order.
Most horses end up with two names: the one on the paperwork and the one the yard shouts across the field.
The ten generators below cover barn names, show names, foal names from the sire and dam, mythical names and names for horses in fiction. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If your horse lives in a game rather than a field, my guide to taming a horse in Minecraft covers the basics.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the tool's own page before you sign up.

The UK racehorse naming rules
Weatherbys, the sole naming authority for Thoroughbreds in the UK, says a horse must be registered with a unique name to race under Rules or in point-to-points. Names can have a maximum of 18 characters including spaces and punctuation, and can't include a real person's name without written permission.
Many generated names run well past 18 characters, especially the elegant show-style ones. If there's any chance your horse will race, count the characters and check the name is free before you fall for it. A barn name can be anything you like; the registered name can't.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
How to choose a horse name
- Decide whether you need a barn name, a show name or both.
- Count the characters if the horse may ever race.
- Say the barn name across a yard; it should carry.
- Draw on the sire, dam, colour or personality for ideas.
- Check the registered name with the relevant authority.
Smaller companions get their names from my cat name guide, which compares tools for kittens and pedigree litters.
Barn names, show names and racing names
A barn name is the everyday name, short enough to call across a field. A show name is longer and more formal, often built from the horse's breeding. A racing name is the strictest of all, with length limits and uniqueness rules set by the racing authority.
Breeders often theme a whole crop of foals around the sire or dam, which helps buyers trace bloodlines. If you'd rather name a horse in a story, my fiction writing prompts give the horse something to do.
Horse naming mistakes
- A show name too long to register. It may be rejected.
- A real person's name without permission. Racing rules don't allow it.
- A barn name nobody can shout. Short names carry further.
- Ignoring the breeding. Buyers like a name that hints at the bloodline.
Signs you've chosen the right horse name
- It carries across the yard.
- It fits the registry rules if you need them.
- It suits the horse's character.
- Everyone at the yard uses it.

My plain advice on naming a horse
Use a generator for ideas, then split the job: a short barn name for every day and, if you need one, a show or racing name that meets the rules.
For anything that might race, check the length and uniqueness rules before the name goes on any paperwork.
For a pet that lives indoors rather than in a stable, our dog name tool comparison is the better starting point.
