How to Wrap Text in Google Sheets (Computer and Phone)

To wrap text in Google Sheets, select the cell or cells and use the text wrapping option in the toolbar. On iPhone and iPad, tap Format, open the Cell tab and choose Wrap text. Widen the column first, or the words squash onto many short lines.

You paste a long product description or a client note into a spreadsheet cell and it either spills across the screen or gets chopped off at the column edge. It's one of the first things that makes a Sheet look messy, and it's usually a two-second fix once you know where the button lives.

I've followed Google's own help pages for this one. They're short on detail, so where Google doesn't spell something out, I'll say so rather than guess at menu names.

Wrapping text in a Google Sheets cell on your computer

Google's help for formatting a spreadsheet lists "Wrap text in a cell" as one of the options in its formatting list, and says that to format text or numbers in a cell you use the options in the toolbar at the top. So the route is:

  1. Open your spreadsheet in Google Sheets in a web browser.
  2. Click the cell, or drag across a group of cells, that holds the long text.
  3. Find the text wrapping button in the toolbar at the top and choose the wrap option.
  4. Check the result. If the words still look squashed, make the column wider.

Toolbar icons and menus vary a little between versions, so hover over the icons if you can't spot it at first. Google's Workspace cheat sheet for Sheets also lists "Change how text wraps or rotate text" as a formatting tip, which is a handy phrase to remember if you go looking in the menus.

Wrap text in the Sheets app on iPhone and iPad

Google's mobile help gives a clear path for this one:

  1. Open the spreadsheet in the Google Sheets app.
  2. Select the cell or cells you want to change.
  3. Tap Format.
  4. In the Cell tab, choose Wrap text from the options.
  5. Tap the sheet to save your changes.

The Android help names Wrap text in the same Cell tab, alongside things like fill colour and merging cells, though Google's page doesn't show every tap on that device. If your app looks slightly different, look for the Format icon and then the Cell tab.

Wrapping part of a cell versus the whole cell

Here's a small thing that catches people out. Google's help says that to format part of the text in a cell, you double-click the cell, select the words you want, then pick a formatting option. That's for things like bold on a few words.

Wrapping is different. It applies to the whole cell, so you don't need to select words inside it. Click the cell once and use the wrap option.

Why wrapped text in Google Sheets matters for small businesses

A spreadsheet is often the first place a small business keeps its working notes: customer feedback, supplier details, content ideas, a list of tasks for the week. Those cells tend to hold sentences, not single words. If you share the Sheet with a freelancer, a virtual assistant or a client, an unwrapped column of long notes is hard to read and easy to misread.

Wrapping keeps everything in view without sending people sideways across the screen. It also helps when you print or export a Sheet to share. If you're building something reusable, my notes on choosing a productivity template for your business cover what makes a template pleasant to work in.

Making a wrapped Google Sheets column easier to read

Wrapping on its own isn't always enough. A few habits make a big difference:

  • Widen the column first, then wrap. A very narrow column gives you one word per line.
  • Keep one idea per cell. If a cell holds a whole paragraph, consider splitting it into two columns.
  • Use the alignment options in the same toolbar so the text lines up at the top of the cell rather than the bottom.
  • Check the row height afterwards, especially if you share the Sheet with someone who uses a small screen.

If you work with document templates as well as spreadsheets, I wrote about filling in a Google Docs template correctly, which has the same theme: set the layout once and it stays tidy.

If wrapping text in Google Sheets isn't working

Work through these in order:

  1. Make sure you've selected the cell or cells first. Wrap does nothing with nothing selected.
  2. Check you're editing the sheet, not viewing it. If someone shared it with view-only access, the toolbar formatting options won't change the sheet.
  3. Look at the cell itself. If it's part of a merged group, select the whole group.
  4. Reload the page or reopen the app, then try again.
  5. Still stuck? Search Google's Docs Editors Help for the Sheets formatting article, or ask the person who owns the Sheet to give you edit access.
