Google Classroom Alternatives (2026): 10 Learning Platforms

The best Google Classroom alternatives fall into three groups: full learning management systems for schools and universities, open source platforms you can host and shape yourself, and lighter classroom apps for assignments and parent contact. Ten options follow, including free choices for teachers, and the right one depends on whether you're choosing for one class or a whole school.

Google Classroom is easy to start with, which is why so many schools did. The questions come later: how to handle assessment in depth, how to reach families, or how to run courses for older students in more depth.

The ten platforms below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the provider's own website, read this week. If your students need help getting organised too, my guide to productivity tools for students is a good companion.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free account or an open source version. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start for free, so check the provider's page before you sign up.

Ten learning platforms for schools

Brightspace

Microsoft Teams for Education

Moodle

Best for: Schools and colleges that want an open source learning platform they can host and shape themselves, with a large community behind it.

Sakai

Best for: Universities that want a learning management system that's 100% open source and built by and for educators.

Showbie

Best for: iPad classrooms that want a K-12 platform for assignments and feedback built for the device.

Where to look first

  • A full LMS for a school system or university: Canvas, Brightspace or Moodle.
  • Open source, built by educators: Sakai.
  • Primary classes and parent messaging: ClassDojo.
  • Schools already on Microsoft 365: Microsoft Teams for Education.
  • iPad classrooms: Showbie.
  • Records, admissions and curriculum: Classe365, Edsby or Kiddom.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says schools may act as the parent's agent and consent under COPPA to the collection of children's information, but that ability is limited to the educational context.

So any platform you bring in for younger pupils should be used for school purposes only, with the school's own consent process and privacy checks behind it. Outside the US, follow your own country's data protection rules too.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

One class or the whole school?

A single teacher can start a classroom app in an afternoon. That's perfect for trying ideas, but it can leave pupils juggling different tools for different subjects.

A school-wide platform takes longer to set up and needs training, yet it gives families one place to look. Decide who's choosing before you compare features.

It's also worth asking who'll look after the platform day to day. A school-wide system needs someone to manage classes, accounts and updates, and that time should be planned for rather than squeezed in.

Once the platform is settled, end of term comments are the next job, and our list of AI report card comment generators covers tools that draft them for you to edit.

Questions for a platform demo

  1. How do pupils and families log in?
  2. Can we import classes from our records system?
  3. How are assignments marked and returned?
  4. Where is pupil data stored and who can see it?
  5. Does it work on the devices our pupils have?
  6. What training and support do staff get?

Signs you've outgrown your current setup

  • Families can't find updates. Look at parent messaging.
  • Assessment lives in spreadsheets. Consider a full LMS.
  • Pupils use five apps. Agree one platform.
  • You need control over data. Look at open source.

Do you make learning platforms or classroom apps? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing a classroom platform

Involve the people who'll use it every day. A short trial with a few teachers, a handful of families and some pupils tells you more than any feature list.

Then check data protection with whoever handles it at your school before anything goes live. For marking help along the way, these writing prompts for middle schoolers give pupils something worth handing in.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to Google Classroom?

It depends on scale. Full learning management systems suit whole schools and universities, while lighter apps suit single classes and parent contact.

Is there a free alternative to Google Classroom?

Yes. Some classroom apps are free for teachers, and some learning platforms are open source.

Can schools consent for parents under COPPA?

The FTC says schools may act as the parent's agent and consent, but only within the educational context.

What is an open source LMS?

It's a learning management system whose code is freely available, so a school can host and adapt it, often with help from a partner.

Which platform works best on iPads?

Some K-12 platforms are built for iPad classrooms. Check each provider's page for the devices it supports.

How long does it take to switch platforms?

A single class can switch quickly, while a whole school should allow time for setup, training and data checks.
