Post things people want to reply to: a photo from your day, a question sticker, a short update, a 30-second voice note or a collage of the weekend. Keep text statuses to one line, post when your contacts are on their phones, and use Status privacy to choose exactly who sees each one.
Every status disappears after 24 hours, which takes the pressure off. You're not building a perfect feed like on Instagram. You're giving the people in your phone a small window into your day, and the best statuses feel like a message to a friend rather than a post to an audience.
Before you post, know this: only people who have your number saved, and whose number you've saved, can see your status. WhatsApp's help centre says both sides need each other in their address book. So if a cousin says they never see your updates, the fix is usually saving their number, not changing a setting.
Everyday status ideas
These work because they're low effort and easy to react to. Post the photo and add a line like one of these, all written for this page:
- "Coffee number two and it's not even ten."
- "Today's view from the bus window."
- "Made it to the gym. That's the whole update."
- "First time cooking this. Wish me luck."
- "The cat has claimed my chair again."
- "Rain outside, blanket inside, no plans."
- "Small win today: inbox at zero."
- "Guess where I've ended up. Wrong answers only."
Deep and thoughtful lines
For the days you want something quieter. Each of these is original, so you can post it without borrowing anyone's words:
- "Some days the bravest thing I do is rest."
- "I'm learning to let people be who they are, and let go when they show me."
- "Not every silence is empty. Sometimes that's where I heal."
- "The version of me you met last year has moved on. Be kind to the new one."
- "Growth looks a lot like saying no and not explaining why."
- "I don't need the whole map. The next step is enough."
- "Peace isn't a place I find. It's a choice I keep making."
- "Old wounds teach. They don't get to steer."
Funny ones
- "My bed and I are in a committed relationship. Please don't call before eleven."
- "Diet starts Monday. Which Monday, we'll see."
- "Walked into the kitchen with a plan. Left with a biscuit and no memory."
- "Status: buffering."
- "I'd reply faster, but my phone is at four percent and so am I."
- "Adulting today: ate a vegetable on purpose."
- "Plot twist: I'm the one who left the empty milk carton in the fridge."
Status ideas for a small business
If you sell anything through WhatsApp, Status is free shelf space in front of people who already have your number. Keep it useful:
- A behind-the-scenes photo: "Packing today's orders. Yours might be in this pile."
- A new arrival: "Just in, only a few made. Reply here if you want one put aside."
- A question sticker: "Which colour should we make next?"
- Opening hours: "Closed Sunday, back Monday at nine."
- A happy customer, only with their permission: "Kind words from a customer this week."
- A quick tip: "How to keep your plant alive in winter, in three lines."
One post a day is plenty. Contacts can mute your status, and a stream of sales posts is the quickest way to get muted.
Festival and occasion lines
- Diwali: "May your home be bright, your plates full and your phone full of good news."
- Eid: "Eid Mubarak to everyone in my contacts. Wishing you a table full of family."
- Christmas: "Wrapping paper everywhere and I wouldn't change a thing. Merry Christmas."
- New Year: "New year, same me, slightly better sleep schedule. Happy New Year."
- Birthdays: "Another year older and still the funniest person in this group chat."
- Exam results: "Results are out. Whatever yours say, I'm proud of you."
- Holi: "Colour on my clothes, colour on my face, colour on my phone screen. Happy Holi."
Which status type to use
| Status type | Best for | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Photo with a short line | Everyday moments | One line of text, placed away from faces |
| Layout collage | A trip, a party, a busy weekend | WhatsApp lets you combine up to six photos in one status |
| Voice status | Quick news, a greeting | Up to 30 seconds, so say one thing well |
| Text status | A thought or a deep line | Short lines read better on the coloured background |
| Question sticker | Getting replies | Ask something easy to answer in a few words |
| Music | Setting a mood | See how to add music to your WhatsApp status |
| Add Yours sticker | Starting a chain | Friends answer the prompt on their own status |
Feature names shift between app updates. If you can't find one, open Status, start a new update and look at the icons along the top of the editor.
Choose who sees each status
WhatsApp gives you three audiences, set from the Updates tab under Status privacy (on Android it's in the three-dot menu):
- My contacts: everyone saved in your phone who has saved you back.
- My contacts except...: everyone, minus the people you tick. Good for keeping work contacts out of family posts.
- Only share with...: a short list you pick, like a close friends circle.
A change only applies to new statuses. Anything you've already posted keeps the audience it went out with, so delete and repost it if you picked the wrong group.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Timing and the 24-hour clock
Because each update lives for 24 hours, the time you post decides who catches it. Early morning and evening, when people scroll on the commute or on the sofa, tend to get seen by more of your contacts. Posting five updates in a row means people tap through them fast, so space them out.
Want to know who watched? Your viewer list sits under each update while it's live, but if a contact has read receipts turned off, you won't see them on the list even if they watched. That's the usual reason views look low, and this guide to missing status views covers the other causes. Once a status expires, the viewer list goes with it, as explained in seeing who viewed after 24 hours.
What I'd post
I'd post one real photo with a short line most days, and save the deep quotes for when I mean them. A status that gets a reply is worth more than one that only gets views.
Frequently asked questions
What should I post on my WhatsApp status?
Post something people can react to: a photo from your day with one short line, a question sticker, a voice note or a collage. Keep it personal rather than polished.
How long does a WhatsApp status last?
Each status disappears after 24 hours. You can delete it earlier, which removes it from your contacts' phones too.
Why can't some contacts see my status?
Both of you need each other's numbers saved, and they must be included in your Status privacy setting. If either is missing, your updates won't show for them.
Can I hide my status from one person?
Yes. In Status privacy choose My contacts except, then tick that person. The change applies from your next status onwards, not to ones already posted.
How long can a voice status be?
WhatsApp allows voice status updates of up to 30 seconds.
