YouTube Monetization in India: The 500 and 1,000 Subscriber Rules

YouTube monetization in India starts earlier than most people think: India is on YouTube's expanded Partner Program list, so you can apply with 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days and 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views. Ad revenue sharing still needs the full 1,000 subscriber threshold, and every feature needs you to be 18 or over.

India gets more of YouTube's earning tools than almost any other country, and that creates its own confusion. Creators hear '500 subscribers' from one friend and '1,000 subscribers' from another, and both are right. They're talking about two different levels of the same programme. Here's how the rules fit together for a channel based in India, using YouTube's own help pages.

Two entry points for Indian channels

YouTube runs an expanded version of its Partner Program in a list of countries, and India is on it. That gives Indian creators an earlier door into YPP with fan funding and Shopping features, before ad revenue sharing switches on.

LevelWhat you needWhat it opens
Expanded YPP (early access)500 subscribers, 3 valid public uploads in the last 90 days, plus 3,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 daysFan funding and Shopping features
Full YPP threshold1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 daysAd revenue sharing on top

The detail people miss: the '3 valid public uploads in the last 90 days' rule. A channel that hit 500 subscribers a year ago and then went quiet won't qualify for the early level until it's posting again.

Rules every Indian channel has to follow first

Whichever level you're aiming for, YouTube's checklist is the same. You follow the channel monetization policies, carry no active Community Guidelines strikes, turn on 2-Step Verification, have advanced features access and link one active AdSense for YouTube account. YouTube's fan funding rules add that you must be at least 18 years old.

Two quieter rules are worth knowing. YouTube says it may switch off monetization on channels that haven't uploaded or posted for 6 months or more. And watch hours from private, unlisted and deleted videos, ad campaigns and Shorts don't count towards the 4,000 hours. If your channel has ever been closed down, read my notes on why channels get terminated before you apply.

Earning features Indian creators can switch on

Here's where India stands out. Every feature list I checked on YouTube's help centre includes India:

  • Super Chat and Super Stickers during live streams and Premieres.
  • Channel memberships, as long as your channel isn't set as made for kids.
  • Super Thanks on uploaded videos.
  • The YouTube Shopping affiliate program, which YouTube lists for a short set of countries that includes India.

That last one matters for review and recommendation channels. If you want to understand how the tagging and approval works, my explainer on the YouTube Shopping affiliate program goes through it. For live creators, it's also worth reading how YouTube pays for live streams before you plan a streaming schedule.

Applying in YouTube Studio from India

  1. Open YouTube Studio and click Earn. Select Get notified if you're not eligible yet; YouTube emails you once you qualify.
  2. When eligible, select Apply Now and accept the Base terms.
  3. Set up an AdSense for YouTube account inside Studio, or link the active one you already have.
  4. Wait for the review. YouTube says it typically takes about 1 month.
  5. If you're turned down, appeal within 21 days or reapply after 30 days. After a second rejection the wait is 90 days.

Getting YouTube earnings into an Indian bank

India has a single payment route for YouTube. In Google's payment-method table, the YouTube columns for India show wire transfer as Yes and cheque, EFT and Hyperwallet as No. So you'll be adding an Indian bank account for international wire payments in AdSense for YouTube, not waiting for a cheque.

Ask your bank how it handles incoming foreign wires before your first payment arrives, because charges and conversion vary by bank and Google doesn't set them. If you're comparing how other platforms pay out locally, I've covered earning apps that withdraw by UPI separately.

The US tax step that affects Indian YouTubers

Google says every monetizing creator must submit US tax info, wherever they live. Its own worked example uses India: with tax info and a treaty claim, the rate on earnings from US viewers drops to 15%, against 30% without a treaty benefit. Skip the form completely and Google may deduct up to 24% of your total worldwide earnings until it's sorted.

Treaty claims need a tax ID, and for India that's your PAN. Claim by Dec. 10th each year, as Google asks. I've written a fuller guide on YouTube tax for India covering PAN, the residence certificate and re-submitting the form.

My take on YouTube monetization in India

If you're in India, use the early door. Hitting 500 subscribers with steady uploads gets you into YPP and lets you test memberships or Super Thanks with your most loyal viewers long before ad revenue starts. Keep posting at least every few months, get your PAN and tax form sorted the moment you're accepted, and treat Shopping as a real option if your videos already recommend products.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get monetized on YouTube in India with 500 subscribers?

Yes, at the early level. India is on YouTube's expanded YPP list, which opens fan funding and Shopping features at 500 subscribers with 3 recent public uploads and enough watch hours or Shorts views.

What are the full YouTube monetization requirements in India?

1,000 subscribers with 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers with 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, plus YouTube's policy checks.

Is the YouTube Shopping affiliate program available in India?

Yes. YouTube's Shopping affiliate program page names India among the countries where eligible creators can join it.

How do Indian YouTubers receive payments?

By international wire to a bank account through AdSense for YouTube. Google's table lists wire as the only YouTube payment method for India.

Do I need to be 18 to monetize YouTube in India?

For fan funding features such as memberships and Super Thanks, YouTube says you must be at least 18 years old.
