To add music to WhatsApp Status, open Updates, add a photo or video, tap the music icon, search for a song, preview it and add it. The detail people trip over: photos get up to 15 seconds of music, and the icon isn't available in every country yet.
A short song clip can turn a plain photo into something people stop and watch, which is why music on WhatsApp Status has become popular with creators, shop owners and anyone who wants their update to feel a bit more alive. The feature lives inside the status editor and uses a built-in song library, so you don't need another app. Below is the route WhatsApp's help centre gives, the limits on clip length, and the reasons the music icon might be missing for you.
Adding music to a WhatsApp Status from a photo or video
The steps are the same on Android and iPhone, according to WhatsApp's help centre:
- Open WhatsApp and tap the Updates tab.
- Tap Add status (or My status, then the add button) and pick or take a photo or video.
- Tap the music icon in the editing tools.
- Use the search bar to look for songs, artists, genres and moods, or tap Popular to see what's popular in your country.
- Tap a song to preview it, then add it to your status.
- Choose the part of the song you want, post your status, and it's live.
If you want to change how the music sticker looks, the help pages say to tap the music sticker and then Done. Menus vary by app version, so if an icon sits in a different corner on your phone, look for the music note among the editing tools.
Making a WhatsApp Status with music and no photo
You don't have to start with a picture. WhatsApp's help centre describes a shortcut: open Updates, tap the add button, then choose Music. Search for a song or scroll the popular ones, preview it, and add it. That's useful when you simply want to share a track you're listening to rather than a photo of it.
How long can the music be on a WhatsApp Status?
| Status type | Music length, per WhatsApp's help centre |
|---|---|
| Photo | Up to 15 seconds |
| Video | The music can last for the length of the video, and a status video can be up to 90 seconds |
| Text, GIF or voice status | Music can't be added |
So if you want the whole 90 seconds of a song to play, you need a video that long. A still image only gets a short clip. That limit is why a short, snappy photo update with a chorus works better than a long one with a quiet intro.
Finding the music icon on WhatsApp Status when it's missing
WhatsApp's help centre is upfront here: music on Status isn't available in every country yet, and even in a supported country it may not have reached your account. Availability can also vary by where you're based. Things worth checking:
- You're making a photo or video status. Text, GIF and voice updates can't carry music.
- You're using an iPhone or an Android phone. The help pages say you can't add music to a status on other devices or platforms yet.
- WhatsApp is up to date, because older versions may not show the icon.
- You're in the standard app. In the Business app the music choice may be limited or look different.
If the icon still isn't there after those checks, the likely explanation is that the feature hasn't reached your account yet, and waiting is the only fix. There's nothing in the settings that switches it on.
WhatsApp Status music in the WhatsApp Business app
This one matters if you run a small business. WhatsApp's help centre says that to make sure the licensed music library isn't used for commercial purposes, business accounts get restricted access to it. So your song choice in the Business app might be limited, or different from what a friend sees in the regular app. If you're promoting something, keep your status simple: a clear photo, a short caption, and a clear next step for the viewer.
Starring songs and adding the music from someone else's status
A couple of small features save time. You can star a song in the music browser, using the star beside it, and your starred songs then show up in the Starred tab for next time. And if you see a status with a track you like, the help pages say you can tap the name of the song and choose Add a status with music to start your own with the same song. Tap the song name and use View Artist to read about the artist, though that may take you out of WhatsApp.

Who can see what music you chose on WhatsApp Status?
Your viewers will see the music on your status, of course. On the privacy side, WhatsApp's help centre says status is end-to-end encrypted, so WhatsApp can't see what you share and doesn't know which songs you add. If you're curious about who is watching your updates, I explain what the app does and doesn't show in my piece on whether WhatsApp shows how many times you viewed a status.
Editing or deleting a WhatsApp Status once the music is on
WhatsApp's help pages for status say you can't change the photo or video of a status after posting it, and that includes the music, but you can edit the caption within 15 minutes. If the music is wrong, the practical fix is to delete that status and post it again. To delete one, tap Updates, then My status, tap the status, open the menu and choose Delete. You can't delete several at once. A status stays up for 24 hours anyway.
