Engaged views is the YouTube Analytics metric that shows how many viewers chose to keep watching, rather than every time playback started. YouTube kept it when it changed how Shorts views are counted, and Partner Program earnings are still based on engaged views and engaged watch hours, not on the public view count.
If your Shorts view count jumped but your earnings didn't, engaged views is the reason. YouTube now counts views one way for the number people see and another way for the number that pays. Here's what changed and how to read each metric.
Why YouTube created engaged views
From 31 March 2025, YouTube changed how Shorts views are counted. Views now count the number of times a Short starts to play or replay, with no minimum watch time. YouTube said this gives creators a more complete picture of how their short videos are doing, especially when shared across platforms.
The old way of counting didn't disappear. YouTube kept the existing Shorts view metric, renamed it engaged views, and left it in YouTube Analytics so you can see how many viewers chose to continue watching.
YouTube's engagement metrics page adds a further change: beginning August 24, 2026, views are counted the moment a video starts to play across all formats, including Shorts, long-form videos and live streams.
Views, engaged views and qualified views
| Metric | What it measures | What YouTube uses it for |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Each time a video starts to play | The public view count |
| Engaged views | Viewers who chose to keep watching | Partner Program earnings, including Shorts revenue sharing |
| Qualified views | Views that meet YouTube's rules for thresholds | Partner Program eligibility and Shorts thresholds |
YouTube's wording is direct: Partner Program earnings will still be based on engaged views and engaged watch hours, and eligibility will still be based on qualified views.
How engaged views affect Shorts earnings
Shorts revenue sharing is calculated from engaged views. Each month, ad revenue from the Shorts Feed is pooled and allocated to monetising creators based on their share of engaged views from monetising creators' Shorts in each country. YouTube also says it won't count engaged views it considers ineligible, such as views of non-original Shorts, artificial views from bots, and views of Shorts that don't meet advertiser-friendly guidelines.
That's why chasing replays or bot-driven views doesn't help. The public number might rise; the paying number won't.
How engaged views affect RPM
YouTube's ad revenue analytics page says RPM, your revenue per 1,000 views, is calculated per 1,000 engaged views. So engaged views sit underneath the number many creators use to judge how well they're earning. I've explained the rest of that metric in my guide to what RPM means on YouTube.
Where to find engaged views
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Analytics.
- Choose the Content tab, or open a specific Short and its analytics.
- Look for engaged views alongside views, and compare across your Shorts.
YouTube suggests using engaged views to compare performance across all your Shorts. It's a fairer comparison than raw views, because it filters out quick scrolls past.
Why your view count may look frozen
Separately from engaged views, YouTube says it checks that metrics come from real people. To verify accuracy it may temporarily slow down, freeze or change a metric count, and discard low-quality playbacks. A count that pauses for a while is usually being checked, not lost.
What engaged views mean for the 2027 Shorts rules
YouTube has announced that from 1 February 2027, earning from the Shorts Creator Pool each month needs at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. That threshold uses qualified views, and once you've cleared it, your share is worked out on engaged views. Missing the threshold doesn't remove you from the Partner Program. For the full eligibility picture, see the current YouTube monetisation requirements.

Engaged views on long videos
Engaged views started as a Shorts metric, but YouTube's later change to count views from the moment playback starts covers long-form videos and live streams too. YouTube's wording for earnings is the same across formats: Partner Program earnings are based on engaged views and engaged watch hours. So on long videos, watch time that holds still matters more than how many people tapped play.
How to grow engaged views
- Hook viewers in the first second; a quick scroll past counts as a view but not an engaged view.
- Keep Shorts original. Reused clips and compilations can be treated as ineligible.
- Don't buy views or use bots. Artificial views are excluded and can put your channel at risk.
- Check which Shorts have the best ratio of engaged views to views and make more like them.
New uploads can take a little while to settle; here's how long YouTube takes to process a video. And for realistic expectations once you're earning, read what YouTube pays once you're monetised.
My take
Treat the public view count as reach and engaged views as the score that counts. If a Short has huge views and weak engaged views, people saw it but didn't stay. That's a hook problem, and it's the first thing I'd fix.
