How Many Followers Do You Need to Go Live on Instagram?

You need at least 1,000 followers and a public account to go live on Instagram. Accounts below 1,000, and private accounts of any size, can't start a Live video, and Teen Accounts have it switched off by default.

For years anyone on Instagram could tap Live and broadcast, even to a handful of close friends. That changed in 2025, and plenty of older guides still say there's no minimum. Here's the rule as Instagram's help centre states it now.

The rule in one line

Instagram says only users who have a public account with 1,000 followers or more can start a Live video. Both halves matter. A huge private account can't go live, and neither can a public account sitting just under 1,000.

When the change rolled out, TechCrunch reported that before it, anyone could broadcast regardless of follower count or account visibility. So if you remember going live with a tiny account, you're not imagining it; the rules moved.

Who can and can't go live

AccountCan start a Live video?
Public, 1,000+ followers, adultYes
Public, under 1,000 followersNo
Private, any follower countNo
Teen Account, under 16Only with a parent's or guardian's permission, and still needs the 1,000 public followers
Teen Account, 16 or 17Can switch it on themselves, and still needs the 1,000 public followers

The teen detail

Instagram's help centre says the ability to start a live video is off by default for Teen Accounts. Teens under 16 need a parent's or guardian's permission to turn it on, while 16 and 17 year olds can switch it on without permission. Teen Accounts also start private, so a teen creator has to deal with the public account rule as well. That's three gates, not one.

Going live from a computer

Once you qualify, you're not limited to your phone. Instagram's Live Producer lets you stream from Instagram.com with streaming software:

  1. On Instagram.com, click Create and choose Live video.
  2. Add a title and pick your audience. Choose Practice to test without going live to anyone, or Public to go live to your followers.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key Instagram shows you.
  4. In your streaming software, choose Custom RTMP and paste them in.
  5. Start streaming. The stream key refreshes each time you use Live Producer, so copy it fresh every time.

The Practice option is underused. It lets you check your camera, sound and lighting with nobody watching, which is the best way to avoid a shaky first minute. And because the stream key changes every session, a saved key in your software from last time won't work; that's the most common reason a computer stream fails to start.

If you're under 1,000 followers

  • Make the account public if it's private. Without that, the follower count doesn't matter.
  • Join someone who qualifies. Instagram lets hosts invite guests into their live broadcast, so you can appear on another creator's Live.
  • Put the effort into Reels and Stories in the meantime, which are open to accounts of any size.
  • Use the time to plan your first Live with care: a topic, a guest and a reason for people to turn up.

My verdict

The 1,000 rule is annoying if you're small, but it's not the hurdle it looks like. Most accounts that grow steadily get there faster than they expect, and a guest slot on someone else's Live is a good shortcut while you wait. If you're still building towards the number, my guide to getting your first 1,000 Instagram followers is a practical place to start, and once you've been live, you can keep the best moments on your profile with Instagram Highlights.

Frequently asked questions

Can you go live on Instagram with less than 1,000 followers?

No. Instagram's help centre says only users with a public account and 1,000 or more followers can start a Live video. You can still join someone else's Live as a guest.

Can private accounts go live on Instagram?

No. The rule requires a public account with at least 1,000 followers.

Can teenagers go live on Instagram?

Live is off by default for Teen Accounts. Under-16s need a parent's or guardian's permission to turn it on; 16 and 17 year olds can turn it on themselves, as long as they meet the follower rule.

Can I test an Instagram Live before going public?

Yes. In Live Producer on Instagram.com you can choose Practice, which doesn't start the live for anyone, before switching to Public.

When did Instagram add the 1,000 follower rule?

In 2025. TechCrunch reported that before the change, anyone could broadcast regardless of follower count or account visibility.
