How to Make a Timeline in Google Slides (Diagram or Custom)

To make a timeline in Google Slides, click Insert, then Diagram, and choose a style, number of levels and template, then type your dates in. For a custom look, draw a line, add shape markers and use Arrange, Distribute so the gaps between milestones come out perfectly even.

Whether it's a launch plan, a client onboarding schedule or the story of how your business started, a timeline turns a list of dates into something people can take in at a glance. Google Slides is a lovely place to build one, especially if your team already shares everything in Google Drive.

Slides gives you two routes: a ready-made diagram from the Insert menu, or your own timeline built from a line and shapes. I'll cover both, plus the alignment tools that keep everything evenly spaced, which is the bit that separates a tidy timeline from a wonky one.

Inserting a diagram for a Google Slides timeline

  1. Open your presentation and go to the slide where the timeline will sit.
  2. At the top, click Insert, then Diagram.
  3. In the panel that opens, choose a style that runs in a line or sequence.
  4. Pick the number of levels, which sets how many steps or dates you start with.
  5. Choose a template from the options shown, and it drops onto your slide.
  6. Click into each part of the diagram and type your dates and milestones.

Google says the diagram is added to the slide for you to change as needed, so recolour it, resize it and swap the text freely. Google's help also notes diagrams work in any language that uses the Latin alphabet.

Building a custom timeline in Google Slides with shapes and lines

If none of the diagram designs fit, or you want something more on-brand, draw your own. It takes ten minutes and gives you complete control:

  1. Click Insert, then Line, and draw a long horizontal line across the slide.
  2. Click Insert, then Shape, and draw a small circle or marker on the line for the first milestone.
  3. Add a text box above or below the marker for the date and a short label.
  4. Copy and paste the marker and text box for each further milestone.
  5. Space them out roughly along the line. You'll even them up in the next step.

Lining up timeline milestones evenly in Google Slides

This is where most homemade timelines fall down. Google Slides has the tools to fix it in seconds, all under the Arrange menu:

  • Select all your markers, then use Arrange, Align, to line their centres up on the same level.
  • With three or more markers selected, use Arrange, Distribute. Google says this evenly spaces the gaps between them.
  • Select each marker with its text box and use Arrange, Group, so they move together as one milestone.
  • Use Center on page under Arrange to sit the whole timeline in the middle of the slide.

Snap to Guides is on by default, so you'll see coloured lines as you drag objects around. If you'd like a stricter layout, turn on the grid with View, Snap to, Grid.

Sizing timeline elements exactly in Google Slides

For a polished look, every marker should be precisely the same size. Select a shape, go to Format, then Format options, and open Size and Position. Type the width and height you want, and tick Lock aspect ratio so circles stay round when you change their size.

Starting from a Google Slides template instead

Short on time? The Templates button at the top left of Slides lets you browse ready-made slides. Click a single slide to add it to your presentation, or select Insert all slides. Look for one with a roadmap or process layout and adapt it. Google notes these templates are currently only available in the English (US) locale, so you may not see them in other language settings.

Making a long timeline readable in Google Slides

  • Keep labels short: a date and three or four words is plenty.
  • Split a long project across two slides rather than squeezing in twenty milestones.
  • Alternate labels above and below the line so they don't crowd each other.
  • Use one accent colour to highlight today or the next big milestone.
  • Add the full detail in your speaker notes or a separate slide.

If your Google Slides timeline won't behave

  • Distribute is greyed out: select at least three objects first.
  • Labels keep moving away from markers: group each pair with Arrange, Group.
  • Can't find Diagram: check you're in the browser version of Slides on a computer and look under the Insert menu.
  • Shapes jump while dragging: that's Snap to Guides. Hold off on fine placement and use Align and Distribute instead.

Google Slides timelines for small business planning

I use timelines in proposals to show clients exactly when each piece of work lands. They're also great on About pages, launch plans and course roadmaps. If you track the same dates in a spreadsheet, keeping a simple tracker with checkboxes in Google Sheets lets you tick milestones off as they happen.

Want a logo or headshot on the timeline? Prepare it first, and my guide to making a transparent background in Canva gives you an image that sits cleanly on any slide colour.
