How to Make a Flyer in Word: Templates and Blank-Page Steps

To make a flyer in Word, go to File, New and pick a pre-built template, then select Create and swap in your own text and pictures. Or start a blank document, set the orientation under Layout, and use text boxes for the details. Keep to one message, or people won't read it.

A flyer is one of the oldest marketing tools there is, and it still works: a coffee shop noticeboard, a pile on the reception desk, a PDF shared in a local Facebook group. You don't need design software to make one. Word has everything you need for a clean, readable flyer, as long as you plan the layout before you start typing.

I'd make one for a workshop, an open day, a new service or a community event. There are two ways in: start from one of Microsoft's ready-made templates, or build your own on a blank page. I'll walk through both, then the design choices that make people stop and read.

Planning a flyer in Word before you open it

Decide these four things first and the design gets much easier:

  1. One message. What's the single thing you want people to do or know?
  2. The headline. Five or six words that make that message obvious from across a room.
  3. The details. Date, time, place and how to get in touch. Nothing more.
  4. The picture. One strong image beats several small ones.

Starting a flyer in Word from a Microsoft template

Microsoft's help on pre-built templates gives this route for Word on Windows:

  1. Go to File, then New.
  2. Browse the pre-built templates, or type what you're after in the search box.
  3. Select a template to see a larger preview.
  4. Choose Create, and Word opens a new document ready for your edits.

Microsoft's article lists categories such as Brochures, Newsletters, Cards and Social media, and says more categories are available, so search the gallery for an event or business design that suits. If you want a wider choice, the same article points to Microsoft's online template collection at create.microsoft.com.

A template saves time on layout, but treat it as a starting point. Change the colours and fonts to match your brand, or it'll look like everyone else's.

Building a flyer from a blank Word document

If you'd rather design your own, start with a blank document and set the page up first.

  1. Decide whether the flyer should be tall or wide. Microsoft's route is Layout, then Orientation, then the tall (Portrait) or wide option.
  2. Add your headline in large, bold type at the top.
  3. Insert your main picture through the Insert tab.
  4. Add text boxes for the details so you can move them freely.
  5. Leave white space. Crowded flyers get ignored.

Adding text boxes to a Word flyer

Text boxes are what make a flyer feel designed, because you can put text anywhere instead of in rows. On Windows, go to Insert, then Text Box. Pick a built-in style, or choose Draw Text Box and click and drag to the size you want.

I'd use one text box for the date and time, one for the location and one for your contact details. You can then place them around the picture, rather than stacking everything in a single column.

Swapping pictures in a Word flyer template

Templates come with placeholder images, and you'll want your own. Select the picture, open the Picture Format tab and choose Change Picture. Microsoft says that if you can't select an image, it may be a background picture, and you may need to open the header to edit it there.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

A logo with a clean, see-through background looks far better on a coloured flyer than one sitting in a white box. If you don't have one, my guide to making a transparent background in Canva shows a quick way to make one.

Design rules that make a Word flyer work

ElementWhat to aim for
HeadlineBig, bold, readable from a distance
FontsTwo at most: one for headings, one for details
ColoursYour brand colours plus one contrast colour for the key detail
PictureOne main image, high quality, related to the message
DetailsShort lines, easy to scan, nothing that needs explaining
ContactOne clear way to get in touch or book

A simple frame can pull a flyer together, and my walkthrough on adding a border in Word covers the page border options. If your event needs more room for details, a folded design gives you extra space, and my guide to making a brochure in Word covers that.

Getting a Word flyer ready to print or share

Before you print a stack, print one copy and look at it from a few steps back. Can you read the headline? Is the date obvious? Then check every detail twice, because a wrong date on a hundred printed flyers is a painful way to learn that lesson.

For sharing online, save it as a PDF so the layout stays exactly as you designed it on any phone or computer. That's the version I'd post in groups, attach to emails or add to an event page.

When your Word flyer layout won't behave

  • A picture won't move. Change its wrapping so it isn't In Line with Text, then drag it.
  • You can't select a template image. It may be a background picture in the header. Double-click the header area to edit it.
  • Text keeps jumping. Put the details in text boxes rather than typing them on the page.
  • The page looks squashed. Check the orientation under Layout, Orientation.

Frequently asked questions

Does Word have flyer templates?

Word has a gallery of pre-built templates under File, New. Microsoft lists categories like Brochures, Newsletters and Social media and says more are available, so search for an event or business design.

How do I make a flyer in Word from scratch?

Open a blank document, set the orientation under Layout, Orientation, add a bold headline, insert one strong picture, and use text boxes for the details.

How do I change the picture in a Word template?

Select it, open the Picture Format tab and choose Change Picture. If you can't select it, it may be a background picture you edit from the header.

Should my flyer be tall or wide?

Either works. A tall (Portrait) flyer suits noticeboards and handouts, and a wide one can suit screens. Change it under Layout, Orientation.

How should I share a Word flyer online?

Save it as a PDF so the layout stays the same on every device, then share that file.
