To leave a Slack workspace, go to your Account settings for it and click Deactivate your account, then confirm with your password. Only Enterprise organisations offer a Leave this workspace button. The catch: your messages stay behind, and only an Owner or Admin can bring your account back.
Finished a contract, stepped back from a community or simply joined one workspace too many? Leaving a Slack workspace sounds like it should be a single button, but in most workspaces it isn't. What Slack offers depends on the type of workspace you're in, and the choice you make decides whether you can come back.
There are three different things people mean by leaving: signing out so the workspace stops nagging you, deactivating your account so you're gone for good, and the Leave this workspace button that only exists inside Enterprise organisations. I'll take each in turn from Slack's own help pages.
Why leaving a Slack workspace works differently
Slack's help explains that you can use one email address to join several workspaces, but each workspace gives you its own separate Slack account. So leaving one workspace means dealing with that one account. Your other workspaces aren't affected.
| What you want | Slack's option | Can you return? |
|---|---|---|
| Stop seeing it on this device | Sign out | Yes, sign back in any time |
| Leave a regular workspace for good | Deactivate your account | Only if an Owner or Admin reactivates you |
| Leave one workspace in an Enterprise organisation | Leave this workspace | Depends on the organisation |
Deactivating your Slack account to leave a workspace
For most workspaces, this is what leaving looks like. Slack's help gives these desktop steps:
- Open your Account settings for that workspace.
- Scroll down to Deactivate account and click Deactivate your account.
- Enter your password and select Confirm Password.
- Click Yes, deactivate my account.
Slack says deactivation happens straight away. If you belong to several workspaces, you need to deactivate each account separately, so check you're in the right one before you confirm.
What happens to your messages when you deactivate
This surprises a lot of people. According to Slack, the messages and files you sent are not deleted when you deactivate. If your workspace settings allow it, you can delete them yourself first. Slack also says apps you installed may be disabled, and a Workspace Owner can re-enable them.
If you want your profile details removed too, Slack's help says to contact the workspace's Primary Owner after you've deactivated.
Signing out of a Slack workspace
If you just want a break, or you're cleaning up the workspaces on your phone, signing out is gentler. Nothing changes on your account, and Slack says you can sign back in any time.
On desktop
- Click your workspace name in the sidebar.
- Select Sign out.
- In your browser, click Sign Out From Browser.
On the Slack mobile app
- From the Home tab, swipe right.
- Tap the three-dots icon next to the workspace name.
- Tap Sign out, then tap Sign Out to confirm.
Leaving a workspace in a Slack Enterprise organisation
Big companies often run Slack as an Enterprise organisation with lots of workspaces under one roof. Here, Slack does give you a leave button. Its desktop steps are:
- Click your workspace name in the sidebar.
- Choose Join or leave workspaces.
- Click the workspace you want to exit.
- Click Leave this workspace.
Slack says leaving also removes that workspace's icon from your Slack app. Two catches from its help: you can't leave a default workspace, and workspaces you were added to through an identity provider group count as default. For those, an owner or admin has to remove you. Slack also notes you can't sign out of individual workspaces inside an Enterprise organisation, which is why leaving is the route there.

If you own the Slack workspace
Running the workspace yourself changes things. Slack says Workspace Primary Owners can't deactivate their accounts. You'd need to transfer primary ownership to someone else first. If what you really want is to shut the whole workspace down, that's a separate job with its own steps, and only the Primary Owner can do it.
Leaving a client's or community Slack politely
If you freelance, you'll often be invited into a client's workspace for a project. When it ends, a quick message before you go is good manners and good business:
- Thank the team and say the project has wrapped up.
- Share where they can reach you if they need you again.
- Hand over any files or links that live only in your messages.
- Then deactivate or ask an admin to remove you, depending on what they prefer.
Communities work the same way as other chat apps here. If you're tidying up those too, my guide to leaving a Discord server on desktop or mobile covers the equivalent steps. And if you're moving between remote contracts, I've explained how remote work is usually set up.
If you can't leave a Slack workspace
- No deactivate option? In an Enterprise organisation, Slack says it won't show if membership is required or if you're a guest. Ask a workspace owner or admin.
- No Leave this workspace button? You're probably in a default workspace, or not in an Enterprise organisation at all.
- Primary Owner? Transfer primary ownership first.
- Still stuck? Ask the workspace owner to deactivate your account for you.
Frequently asked questions
How do I leave a Slack workspace?
In most workspaces you deactivate your account: go to Account settings, click Deactivate your account, confirm your password and click Yes, deactivate my account. In an Enterprise organisation, use Join or leave workspaces, then Leave this workspace.

No. Slack says messages and files you sent aren't deleted when you deactivate. You can delete them first if your workspace settings allow it.

Sign out: from the Home tab swipe right, tap the three-dots icon next to the workspace name, tap Sign out and confirm. Your account stays active.
Why can't I leave my Slack workspace?
