How to Remove Background in Google Slides (and Who Can Use It)

To remove background in Google Slides, select the image, click Edit image and choose Remove background. The catch is access: Google says the tool needs an eligible Google Workspace or Google One AI Premium account, and Reset image won't bring the background back afterwards.

Product shots on a cluttered kitchen counter, a headshot with a busy office behind it, a logo stuck in a white box: they all look better cut out cleanly on a slide. For years Google Slides couldn't do this at all and you had to edit images elsewhere first.

That's changed. Google's help now describes a Remove background tool built into Slides, though not every account has it. Here's how it works, who gets it, and what to do if it's missing from your menu.

Removing an image background in Google Slides step by step

  1. Open your presentation in Google Slides on a computer.
  2. Click the picture so it's selected.
  3. Click the Edit image icon in the toolbar.
  4. Choose Remove background.
  5. Wait a moment while Slides cuts out the subject, then check the edges.

If you prefer menus, the same option lives under Format, then Image, then Edit image, then Remove background. Google says it works the same way in Google Drawings and in Google Vids, so you can cut out a photo in one and reuse it in another.

Which Google accounts get the Slides background remover

This is the part people trip over. According to Google's help page, background removal needs an eligible Google Workspace or Google One AI Premium account. It's one of the Gemini-powered image tools, so a basic personal Gmail account may not see it at all.

Google points to a separate page on Gemini features for the full list of eligible accounts. If you use Slides through work or a small business account and can't see the option, it may also be switched off by whoever manages your Google Workspace.

Undoing a removed background in Google Slides

Here's a detail worth knowing before you start. Google says an image with its background removed can't be put back with Reset image. If the cut-out goes wrong, you have two ways back:

  • Click Undo straight away.
  • Open Version history and restore an earlier version of the presentation.

If you're working on a client deck or a shared team presentation, I'd duplicate the slide first. That way the original photo is always sitting on a spare slide if you need it.

Replacing or expanding a picture background in Google Slides

Google also describes two newer image tools that sit next to Remove background. They're part of Workspace Experiments, Google's trusted tester programme, so availability varies. Look for a Generate an image icon in the Slides toolbar: if it's there, you have access.

ToolWhere to find itWhat it does
Remove backgroundEdit image, Remove backgroundCuts out the subject and drops the background
Replace backgroundEdit image, Replace backgroundSwaps the background for one described in a text prompt
ExpandEdit image, ExpandExtends the picture to Wide, Tall or Square

For Replace background, you type a description in the panel on the right, such as a coffee shop or a park, preview the results with Previous and Next, then click Replace with image. Google is upfront that Gemini is still learning and may not manage every request.

Removing the slide background rather than a picture background

Some people searching for this mean the slide itself, not a photo on it. That's a different setting:

  1. Choose the slide.
  2. Click Slide, then Change background.
  3. To the right of Color, pick white or another plain colour. If an image is set as the background, choose a plain colour or a different image instead.
  4. Click Done for this slide only, or Add to theme to apply it to every slide.

Google's help notes that background images must be .gif, .jpg or .png files under 50 MB. If a theme keeps putting its own pattern back, the background is part of the theme, so Add to theme is the button that overrides it across the deck.

If Remove background isn't showing in Google Slides

Run through these before you give up:

  • Check the image is selected. The Edit image icon only appears once you've clicked a picture.
  • Make sure you're on a computer. Google's steps for this tool are written for the browser version of Slides.
  • Check your account type. A personal account without Google One AI Premium may not have it.
  • Ask your Workspace admin if you're on a work account, because Gemini features can be turned off for an organisation.
  • If Slides can't separate the subject, try a photo with clearer contrast between the person or product and what's behind it.

If it still isn't there, the simplest route is to cut the image out in a design tool and upload the finished file to Slides. My guide to removing a background in Canva walks through that, and if you need a logo with no white box, there's also a walkthrough on saving a transparent PNG from Canva that drops straight onto any slide.

Why cut-out images make Google Slides decks look sharper

For small business owners, coaches and creators, this one tool lifts a homemade deck more than almost anything else. Product photos on a brand-coloured slide look like a catalogue. A cut-out headshot on your About slide looks far more polished than a square photo. And a logo without a white rectangle around it sits neatly on dark slides.

Keep the edges in mind, though. Fine hair, glass and soft shadows are the hardest things for any automatic cut-out to handle, so zoom in and check before you present.
