How to Ban Someone on Twitch (and Undo It)

To ban someone on Twitch, type /ban and their username in your chat. A ban works as an indefinite timeout. The detail people trip over: banned users can still watch your stream while logged out, unless you block it.

Most chats are lovely. Then one person turns up determined to wreck the evening, and you've got a choice: let them spoil it for everyone else, or remove them in a couple of seconds. Learning the ban command ahead of time is one of the best habits a streamer can build, especially if your channel represents a business.

Below is what Twitch's own help pages say about banning, the gentler timeout option, how to undo a ban, and what a banned person can still see. I've kept it to what the help centre documents, so you can trust the details.

The /ban command: how to ban someone on Twitch from chat

The fastest route is the chat box on your own channel. Twitch's help says typing /ban followed by the person's username works as an indefinite timeout. It stops that user chatting in your channel for as long as they stay banned.

  1. Go to your own channel page and click into the chat box.
  2. Type /ban, a space, then the exact username of the person.
  3. Press Enter. Twitch applies the ban straight away.

Replace the word username with the real name. A small typo can mean you ban the wrong account, or nothing happens at all, so check the spelling before you hit Enter.

Timeout or ban on Twitch: which should you use?

A ban is the heavy tool. If someone is just being annoying rather than abusive, a timeout is kinder and often does the trick. Twitch's help says /timeout followed by a username and a number of seconds blocks the person from chatting for that long. The default is 10 minutes if you don't give a time, and you can set any length you like.

SituationSensible Twitch action
Someone is spamming or off topicShort timeout
A repeat offender after a warningLonger timeout
Hate, threats or harassmentBan, then report
You timed out the wrong personSend /unban or a one-second timeout

There's a neat detail in Twitch's help: a new timeout overwrites an older one. So if you time someone out by mistake, typing /timeout username 1 effectively clears it.

How to unban someone on Twitch

People do sometimes deserve a second chance. Twitch's help says /unban followed by the username lifts a ban, and it can end a timeout early as well. Banned users are also listed in your Moderation Settings, so you can find them there, and hovering over a name shows which moderator issued the ban.

Twitch also lets banned users submit an unban request. Channel owners and moderators review these, and the help says that if you deny a request, that person can't submit another. So treat a denial as final unless you plan to lift the ban yourself later.

What a banned Twitch user can still see

This one surprises people. Twitch's help says banned users can still watch livestreams from an incognito window or while logged out, and they can still reach your VODs, highlights and clips. The ban stops them chatting, not viewing. Channel owners do have an option to stop banned users viewing their livestreams, so look in your settings if that matters to you.

For business channels there's a reputation angle too. Viewers judge a brand by how it handles a nasty comment, and a calm, quick removal says more than a long public argument. Don't reply to the troll, don't explain yourself on air, and move on with the show. Afterwards, note the username and what happened so your team has a record if the same person reappears.

Twitch ban evasion: when a banned person comes back

Twitch has a tool for people who return on a new account. Its help describes Ban Evasion Detection, which uses machine learning to flag Possible or Likely evaders of your channel bans. By default Likely evaders are put in restricted mode and Possible evaders are monitored, so mods can review them. Restricted accounts' messages are shown only to you and your moderators.

It only covers channel bans issued by you and your mods, not site-wide suspensions. If it flags someone wrongly, moderators can remove the flag so that person can chat freely. For suspected evaders, Twitch's help points you to the Chat Ban Evasion category when you report, and to the Harassment category for repeated harassment.

Setting up your Twitch team before you ban anyone

The calmest channels I see have a mod team and a short list of house rules. If you haven't picked helpers yet, start there. Pop your rules in a panel, tell mods what earns a timeout and what earns a ban, and agree to talk afterwards about tricky calls.

If the Twitch ban command isn't working

  • Check the spelling of the username. Banning needs the exact name.
  • Make sure you're a moderator or the channel owner on that channel.
  • Update your app or reload the page if the typed command doesn't respond.
  • If someone is threatening you, report them to Twitch and, if you're in danger, contact the police.
