Mother's Day Photo Prompts for ChatGPT: 20 Gift-Worthy Edits

The short version: ChatGPT can turn a normal phone photo of your mum into a watercolour portrait, a vintage postcard, a comic book cover or a stained glass window in about 30 seconds a go, and it costs nothing if you're patient with the free tier or £16 a month if you're not. I've tested all 20 of these prompts on real family photos, including my own mother's, so you're not guessing which ones look good printed out rather than just cute on a phone screen.

Why I stopped buying "personalised" Mother's Day gifts

Two years ago I paid £34 for a printed canvas from one of those personalisation sites, a filtered photo of my mother turned into a "classic oil painting style." It arrived looking exactly like a phone filter someone had printed at low resolution. Muddy, slightly warped, and not worth the money or the 11 days it took to arrive.

Last March I did the same thing myself in ChatGPT with a decent photo and a specific prompt, and it took me four attempts and about six minutes to get one I'd frame. Cost: nothing, because I was already paying for ChatGPT Plus for work. If you're on the free plan you'll get roughly three image generations before it slows you down and makes you wait, so plan for a bit of patience rather than doing this at 11pm the night before Mother's Day.

That's the bit nobody selling personalised gifts wants you to know: the £30 to £50 mug, canvas or blanket "AI art" services are almost always running the exact same underlying models you can access directly, then marking the output up by 400%. You're paying for the printing and the packaging, not the art.

How to do this, step by step

  • Pick one photo where your mother's face is clear, well lit, and not tiny in the frame. Group photos and blurry ones give ChatGPT less to work with and the results look worse.
  • Open ChatGPT (the app or chat.openai.com), tap the plus icon or paperclip, and upload the photo.
  • Paste one of the 20 prompts below directly under the image.
  • If the first result looks off (extra fingers, a warped smile, the wrong hair colour), don't start over. Just reply "keep her face and hair the same, just adjust the background" and it will usually fix it in one more go.
  • Download the highest resolution version offered before you do anything else, because if you close the chat you sometimes lose easy access to it.
  • If you're printing, aim for at least 1500 pixels on the shortest side for anything bigger than a 6x4 print, or it will look soft.

10 keepsake and print-worthy prompts

These are the ones I'd frame, put on a card, or turn into a cushion cover.

  • Watercolour portrait: "Turn this photo into a soft watercolour portrait with visible brush texture and a plain cream background, keep her expression and features true to the original photo."
  • Oil painting, classical style: "Reimagine this as a 19th century oil portrait painting, warm lighting, visible canvas texture, in the style of a formal family portrait, keep facial features accurate."
  • Pencil sketch: "Convert this photo into a detailed graphite pencil sketch on textured paper, soft shading, no colour."
  • Vintage postcard: "Turn this into a 1960s style vintage postcard illustration with a slightly faded colour palette and a simple decorative border."
  • Stained glass window: "Reimagine this photo as a stained glass window design, bold black lead lines, jewel-toned colours, keep the pose recognisable."
  • Needlepoint or tapestry style: "Turn this photo into a needlepoint tapestry illustration with visible stitch texture, warm autumnal colours."
  • Locket-style oval portrait: "Crop and reimagine this as a small oval locket portrait, soft romantic lighting, painterly style, gold decorative frame around the edge."
  • Letterpress card illustration: "Turn this into a simple two-colour letterpress style illustration, flat shapes, minimal detail, suitable for printing on a greetings card."
  • Black and white with one colour highlight: "Convert this photo to black and white except keep [her cardigan / the flowers / her scarf] in its original colour, cinematic contrast."
  • Renaissance style portrait: "Reimagine this photo in the style of a Renaissance oil portrait, ornate clothing details, soft directional lighting, dark background."

10 fun and modern prompts

These are the ones that get an actual laugh out of a family group chat, which counts for a lot on a day that can otherwise feel a bit forced.

  • Comic book cover: "Turn this photo into a 1970s comic book cover, bold outlines, halftone dots, a speech bubble that says 'Best Mum in the Multiverse'."
  • Movie poster: "Reimagine this as a dramatic movie poster titled 'MUM' with cinematic lighting and a tagline about raising us all."
  • Retro Polaroid: "Turn this into a slightly faded 1980s Polaroid photo with a white border and warm colour cast, add a handwritten-style caption in the corner."
  • Superhero: "Reimagine this photo with her wearing a simple superhero cape and emblem, keep the setting and her face realistic, playful not cartoonish."
  • Vinyl record cover: "Turn this into a vintage vinyl record album cover design with a title 'Greatest Hits: A Mother's Love' in a 1970s font."
  • Claymation figure: "Reimagine this as a stop-motion claymation character, soft rounded features, matte texture, warm lighting."
  • Postage stamp: "Turn this photo into a commemorative postage stamp design with a perforated edge and a small denomination in the corner."
  • Garden mural: "Reimagine this photo set inside a blooming spring garden mural, soft pastel flowers, folk art painting style."
  • Then and now collage: "Combine this recent photo with the feel of an old family photo from decades ago, side by side, faded vintage tone on the left half."
  • Birthday-card illustration: "Turn this into a warm, hand-illustrated greetings card style image, soft flat colours, a small floral border, suitable for a Mother's Day card front."

What makes these gift-worthy (and what doesn't)

The prompts that work best all have one thing in common: they tell ChatGPT to keep her face and features accurate rather than letting it invent a generic pretty face that doesn't look like your mother at all. I learned this the hard way on my third attempt at the oil painting portrait, when the first version gave my mother a completely different nose and a jawline that wasn't hers. Adding "keep facial features accurate to the original photo" to the end of any prompt fixes this about 80% of the time.

Here's the part that gets left out of most "AI Mother's Day gift" posts: you don't own full copyright on an AI-generated image in the same way you'd own a photo you took yourself, and printing services occasionally reject files that look too obviously AI-made because of their own content policies. If you're planning to print through a big high street chain, do a test print of one image first rather than ordering ten cards and finding out at the till that half of them got flagged.

The other uncomfortable truth is that a beautifully edited photo doesn't replace an actual phone call or a visit, and I say that as someone who has sent plenty of thoughtful digital gestures from a different country when I couldn't be there in person. Use these prompts to make something nice, not to outsource the effort of showing up.

Pairing the image with the right words

A gift-worthy photo edit is even better with a line underneath it that doesn't sound like a greetings card aisle. I write client messaging for a living and the same rules apply here as they do for any small business trying to sound human rather than corporate, which is exactly what I cover in my ChatGPT prompts for florists guide, where the copy-and-paste prompts for warm, specific messages work just as well for a card as they do for a flower delivery note.

Turning one photo into an actual gift, not just a file

A file sitting in your camera roll isn't a present. Here's what I've done with these edits:

  • Printed as a 5x7 at a supermarket photo kiosk for under £2 and slipped into a £4 frame from a homeware shop.
  • Turned into a physical card using free design tools where you drop the image onto a card template and add a printed message inside.
  • Used as the cover image for a small printed photo book alongside six or seven real family photos, ordered through a standard photo printing service for around £15 to £20.
  • Set as a phone lock screen for her, which sounds small but my own mother screenshotted hers and sent it to three friends within an hour.

None of that took more than 20 minutes end to end once I had the photo edited, and the total spend across all four ideas was under £25.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay for ChatGPT to do this?

No, the free tier can generate images, but you're limited to roughly three before it slows down and asks you to wait, so start early rather than the night before Mother's Day if you want to try several prompts.

Why does my mother's face look wrong in the AI version?

This usually happens when the prompt doesn't ask ChatGPT to keep the original features. Add the line "keep her facial features and expression accurate to the original photo" to any prompt and regenerate, and it corrects most of the time.

Can I legally print and sell these images?

You can print one for personal, private use without any issue, but AI-generated images sit in a legal grey area for copyright ownership, so this isn't the route to take if you're planning to sell prints commercially rather than give one gift to your own mother.

What's the best photo to start with?

A single clear, well-lit photo where her face takes up a decent portion of the frame, ideally taken in daylight rather than a dim indoor shot, gives ChatGPT far more detail to work with and produces a sharper, more accurate result.
