YouTube Studio Not Working? Browser, Cache and Help Fixes

If YouTube Studio is not working, refresh the page, check you're signed in to the right channel, then update your browser and clear the cache and cookies. Test in an incognito window with extensions off. YouTube says ad blockers, extensions and changed DNS settings can all stop pages loading.

YouTube Studio is the control room for a channel: uploads, comments, thumbnails, settings. When it won't load, hangs on a spinner or shows an error, you can't run your channel, and that's stressful if a video is due out today.

YouTube doesn't have a help page called Studio not loading. So I've leaned on its page on video errors, which lists causes for the browser failing to load YouTube pages, and its help for creators. Studio runs in the same browser, so those causes are the ones to check first. I'll flag the places where I'm applying a general fix to Studio.

Spotting how YouTube Studio is not working

It helps to be specific, because each symptom points somewhere different:

  • Studio won't open at all, or sits on a blank page.
  • A page opens but a section such as Content or Comments won't load.
  • You see "Something went wrong. Refresh or try again later."
  • A button does nothing, for example the upload or save button.

The error message in the third bullet is on YouTube's list, with causes and fixes that apply nicely to Studio.

Refreshing and signing in when YouTube Studio shows an error

YouTube says "Something went wrong. Refresh or try again later." can come from being signed out, an outdated browser or app, ad blockers, corrupted cache or cookies, changed DNS settings or a device fault. Start with the simplest items:

  1. Refresh the page.
  2. Check you're signed in to the Google Account that owns the channel.
  3. Look at the channel switcher, in case you're signed in to a different channel.
  4. Restart your browser or device.

The channel switcher check matters for anyone with more than one channel or a brand account. Studio shows the data for whichever channel is selected, so the wrong one can look like missing content. My guide to switching accounts on YouTube takes you through it.

Updating your browser and clearing the cache for YouTube Studio

The browser causes YouTube lists are an outdated browser and corrupted cache or cookies. Work through them in this order:

  1. Update your browser to the latest version.
  2. Clear the cache and cookies.
  3. Sign in to Studio again.

Clearing cookies signs you out of many sites, so make sure you know your passwords before you do it.

Turning off extensions that stop YouTube Studio working

Ad blockers and other extensions interfere with how YouTube loads pages, and YouTube advises checking them. The test YouTube suggests is an incognito window with all extensions disabled.

  1. Open an incognito or private window.
  2. Make sure extensions are switched off in it.
  3. Sign in and open Studio.

If it works, an extension is the problem. Turn them back on one by one to find it, and add Studio to the allowed list for that extension if it has one.

Checking your DNS settings when YouTube Studio won't load

This one is rarely mentioned. YouTube's page says to check that your DNS settings are your preferred servers and haven't been changed by a third-party app. If you've installed a VPN or privacy app lately, turn it off for a moment and refresh to see whether it makes a difference.

Trying another network or device with YouTube Studio

Run Studio from another browser, another computer or another network, like your phone's hotspot. YouTube's help suggests restarting your internet connection and running a speed test for general loading problems. If Studio works elsewhere, the fault is with the first browser, device or network.

YouTube Studio features that only work on a computer

Some Studio tasks simply aren't available on a phone, which can feel like a fault. A clear example from YouTube's help: custom Shorts thumbnails can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer. Your account must also be verified to upload custom thumbnails. If an option you expect is missing on mobile, switch to a computer before assuming Studio is broken.

Likewise, if you want to add captions, my guide to adding subtitles to a YouTube video shows the Studio route and why a computer is easiest.

Getting help from inside YouTube Studio

When your own fixes fail, YouTube's creator help lists the official routes, and several are inside Studio:

  • Click the Help icon and use the search bar to find Help Center articles.
  • Eligible channels can use the Chat icon in the top-right corner for YouTube Help chat.
  • Use Ask Studio for technical and channel management questions.
  • Use the Send feedback button if you still can't reach support.
  • Browse the YouTube Help Community, powered by TeamYouTube.

The page also says support is not offered in person at Google or YouTube offices, so don't plan a visit. Chat availability depends on whether your channel is eligible, so the icon may not appear for everyone.

What to do first if YouTube Studio is not working and a video is due

If you've a launch to hit, don't spend an hour debugging. Try a private window with extensions off, then a second browser, then your phone hotspot. If one of them works, publish from there and sort the cause out afterwards.
