YouTube Shorts Analytics: Shown in Feed, Chose to View and More

YouTube Shorts analytics live in YouTube Studio: open Analytics, go to the Content tab and select the Shorts chip. The two Shorts-only numbers to watch are Shown in feed, how often your Short appeared in the Shorts feed, and How many chose to view, the share of times people watched instead of swiping away.

Shorts analytics used to be a guessing game, because the only early signal was a view count that included people who'd flicked straight past. YouTube has since added two metrics that tell you whether your opening works, and it has changed how views are counted twice. Here's what each number means now and how I'd use it, as of October 2026.

Where to find Shorts analytics

  1. Open YouTube Studio on the web or in the Studio app.
  2. Go to Analytics and open the Content tab.
  3. Select the Shorts chip to filter to Shorts only.
  4. Click an individual Short to see its own analytics.

YouTube says the Content tab sorts by videos, Shorts, live and posts, and that the Shorts view includes views, comments, remixes and other metrics. For the general Studio layout, my walkthrough on the YouTube Studio dashboard shows where everything sits.

What each Shorts metric means

MetricYouTube's definitionWhat to do with it
ViewsHow many times your Shorts were viewed, compared with your Shorts' typical performanceSpot your outliers and when to post
LikesChange in total likes: likes minus dislikesSee which topics your audience warms to
SubscribersChange in subscribers compared with your typical performanceFind the Shorts that turn viewers into subscribers
Shown in feedThe number of times your Shorts showed in the Shorts feedYour raw exposure: how much YouTube tested the Short
How many chose to viewThe percentage of times viewers viewed your Shorts versus swiped awayYour hook score: low means the first second isn't working

Views versus engaged views

This is where most confusion comes from. YouTube says that from 31 March 2025 a Shorts view counts each time a Short starts to play or replay, with no minimum watch time. The older Shorts view metric stayed in YouTube Analytics under a new name, engaged views, so you can see how many viewers chose to keep watching.

YouTube then went further: its help pages say that beginning 24 August 2026, views are counted the moment a video starts to play across all formats, including Shorts, long-form videos and live streams. It adds that YouTube Partner Program earnings are still based on engaged views and engaged watch hours, and eligibility on qualified views. So if your public view count looks higher than your engaged views, that's expected. Use engaged views to compare one Short with another.

How viewers find your Shorts

The traffic report shows where your audience comes from: external sites and apps, YouTube search terms, suggested videos and playlists. YouTube's own Shorts help adds that viewers find Shorts in the Shorts feed, in search across YouTube including smart TVs and game consoles, on the homepage, on your channel homepage, in subscriptions and in notifications. If search terms show up for your Shorts, that's a strong hint to title them like answers.

Top remixed: a trend signal

Shorts analytics also has a Top remixed report showing remix views, total remixes and your most remixed content, filtered by Sound, Cut or Green Screen. YouTube describes it as a sign of your content's potential to start a trend. If a Short gets remixed, make a follow-up quickly while people are still playing with it.

Reading the numbers together

  • Shown in feed high, chose to view low: YouTube gave it a chance and the opening didn't hold. Rework the first second.
  • Chose to view high, shown in feed low: people who see it like it. Post at a better time or give it a clearer title.
  • Views high, subscribers flat: entertaining but not tied to your channel's promise. Add a reason to come back.
  • Engaged views far below views: lots of starts, few stayers. Tighten the edit.

A weekly Shorts review in ten minutes

Every Monday, filter the Content tab to Shorts and sort by views for the past week. For your best and worst Short, write down shown in feed, how many chose to view, engaged views and subscribers gained. Then watch the first three seconds of each. The difference between them is usually obvious once the numbers sit side by side, and it tells you what to change in the next batch.

Why your numbers sometimes freeze

YouTube says it may temporarily slow down, freeze or adjust counts while it confirms that engagement is legitimate, and it discards low-quality playbacks such as the same video playing on several devices. It also says the subscriber number in Analytics runs about 48 hours behind the public count while spam checks run. If a Short's numbers stall in the first hours, give it a day before you judge it. If they look stuck at zero, this guide to Shorts view counts stuck at zero covers the fixes.

My verdict

If you only check one Shorts number, make it How many chose to view: it tells you whether your opening works, and the opening decides almost everything on Shorts. Use Shown in feed to see how much YouTube tested each Short, engaged views to compare Shorts fairly, and subscribers to find the format worth repeating. Check them a day after posting, not an hour after, because YouTube may still be confirming the counts in the first hours.

Frequently asked questions

Where are YouTube Shorts analytics?

In YouTube Studio, open Analytics, go to the Content tab and select the Shorts chip. Click a single Short for its own analytics.

What does shown in feed mean on YouTube Shorts?

YouTube defines it as the number of times your Shorts showed in the Shorts feed.

What does chose to view mean?

It's the percentage of times viewers watched your Short instead of swiping away, according to YouTube's help centre.

What is an engaged view on Shorts?

Engaged views is the older Shorts view metric, kept in YouTube Analytics so you can see how many viewers chose to keep watching. YouTube Partner Program earnings are still based on engaged views.

Why are my Shorts views higher than engaged views?

YouTube now counts a view when a Short starts to play or replay, with no minimum watch time, so views will usually be higher than engaged views.
