YouTube Not Working on Roku? Fixes for the TV App (2026)

If YouTube isn't working on your Roku, check your internet connection first, then quit and reopen the app, sign out and back in, and restart the device by disconnecting its power. Also update the system software. YouTube recommends a minimum 7 Mbps connection speed for HD.

When YouTube stops working on your Roku, it tends to happen at the worst moment: you've put a training video on the big screen for a team meeting, or the kids want their show and the app is stuck on a spinning wheel. The fix is usually quick, but only if you work through the right things in the right order.

One honest note first. YouTube's help pages don't have a Roku-only article. They treat smart TVs, streaming devices and game consoles together, and a Roku sits in that group. So the steps below are YouTube's own TV and streaming-device advice, and where your Roku has its own menus for something, I'll say to use those rather than guess at button names.

Spotting how YouTube is not working on your Roku

Be specific about the symptom, because each one points somewhere different:

  • The app opens but videos buffer, lag or stop.
  • The app won't sign in, or keeps asking for a code.
  • You get a message saying YouTube is no longer available because the device doesn't meet the latest requirements.
  • The app opens to a blank screen or closes.
  • Casting from your phone doesn't find the Roku.

The third one is a different kind of problem from the rest, so I'll deal with it first.

When YouTube says your Roku doesn't meet the latest requirements

YouTube's help says the current YouTube app won't work on certain device models, and older versions of the app stop working too. If you see the message that YouTube is no longer available because the device doesn't meet the latest requirements, the app will no longer work on that device. YouTube explains that it periodically updates its security standards to keep user information safe, which means it turns off its services on devices that can't keep up.

There are two things to try. YouTube says that sometimes you can upgrade your device's firmware to restore access, and if you're not sure how, you should get in touch with the device manufacturer. And if your TV has a web browser, it may be possible to carry on using YouTube through youtube.com. There's also a compatibility check for smart TVs, streaming devices and game consoles on YouTube's help pages.

Quick fixes when YouTube is not working on your Roku

For playback problems, YouTube's TV troubleshooting list runs like this. I've kept the order, because the quick ones come first:

  1. Check your internet connection. YouTube recommends a minimum 7 Mbps connection speed for HD streaming, and suggests testing the speed right next to the TV.
  2. Check the streaming quality. In the video player, select Settings, then Quality, and see whether you can adjust it manually.
  3. Quit and reopen the YouTube app. Press the home button on your remote, reopen the app and replay the video.
  4. Sign out of the YouTube app and sign back in.
  5. Restart your device. Disconnect it from power, wait several seconds, reconnect it, then reopen the app.
  6. Update the system software for your device, using the system update section of its settings.

Do these one at a time and test the video after each. If you change three things at once, you won't know which one worked, and you'll be back here with the same problem.

Fixing a weak connection for YouTube on your Roku

A slow connection is the usual culprit when videos stutter. YouTube suggests making sure the device is within range of your router and has minimal interference, for example that it isn't recessed into a wall unit or blocked by metal. Try moving the device if you can, and try reducing how many other devices are using your network at the same time. If you're not sure whether the TV is the problem, play the same video on your phone using the same Wi-Fi. If the phone struggles too, it's your connection.

Signing out and back in to YouTube on your Roku

YouTube's TV help gives this route for signing out and in again: open the YouTube app, select your profile picture and then the icon below it to manage your profile, and select Next to continue and sign out. Then go back to Settings and select Sign in. You may need to enter a code.

If sign-in is the whole problem, YouTube's TV sign-in page offers two ways in: sign in with your phone, by scanning the QR code or going to yt.be/activate and entering the code on screen, or sign in with your remote and the on-screen keyboard. If one doesn't work, try the other. When the phone route fails, check the TV and phone are on the same Wi-Fi network, the phone isn't using mobile data, and you typed the code correctly. My guide to switching accounts on YouTube helps if you have more than one Google Account, and signing out of YouTube explains the idea in general.

YouTube also suggests resetting the YouTube app in its Settings, but warns that if you're signed in, this will sign you out. Make sure you know your Google Account details before you do it.

Casting to your Roku when the YouTube app misbehaves

A handy workaround is to stop using the TV app's own controls. YouTube's help describes casting: your phone, tablet or computer controls what plays on the TV. To cast from a computer, make sure the computer and the TV or streaming device are on the same Wi-Fi network, open the YouTube app on the TV, open the video on youtube.com, click the three-dot menu in the player and select Cast. YouTube says you can't cast from youtube.com in a mobile browser, so on a phone use the YouTube app.

If your phone and TV aren't on the same Wi-Fi, a TV code can link them. On the TV, open Settings and scroll to Add a device to see a blue TV code made up of numbers. On your phone, tap Cast, then Add a device, enter the code and tap Link. YouTube notes that TV codes aren't available with computers.

Using another way to watch when YouTube is not working on your Roku

YouTube's own suggestion, if a problem sticks around, is to try another method of getting the video onto your TV. If you have a Chromecast, play on another device and cast to your TV. If you have an HDMI cable, play from a laptop and connect it to your TV. It also suggests watching on a different device to see whether the same issue follows you, which tells you whether the Roku is the cause.

If YouTube is not working on your Roku for everyone

Sometimes the cause is wider than your living room. If other apps are also struggling, check with your device maker, because YouTube says that if you're having trouble updating or seeing streaming issues across several services, you should look at the manufacturer's support site. For a broader checklist, see why YouTube isn't working.

You can also send feedback from the app itself. YouTube says to select your profile icon, then Help and Feedback, then Send Feedback straight after the problem occurs.

Frequently asked questions

Why is YouTube not working on my Roku?

YouTube's help lists the usual causes for TVs and streaming devices: a weak connection, an app that needs restarting or signing in again, outdated system software, or a device that no longer meets YouTube's requirements.

What does 'YouTube is no longer available because this device doesn't meet the latest requirements' mean?

YouTube says the app will no longer work on that device. You may be able to restore access by upgrading the firmware, or use youtube.com if your TV has a web browser.

What internet speed does YouTube recommend for HD on a TV?

YouTube recommends a minimum 7 Mbps connection speed for HD streaming.

How do I restart the YouTube app on a streaming device?

Press the home button on your remote and reopen the app. For a full restart, disconnect the device from power, wait several seconds and reconnect it.

Can I cast YouTube to my TV instead?

Yes. YouTube says you can cast from the YouTube app on your phone or tablet, or from youtube.com on a computer, if both are on the same Wi-Fi as your TV or streaming device.

Will resetting the YouTube app sign me out?

Yes. YouTube says resetting the app in Settings signs you out if you're signed in, so keep your Google Account details handy.
