Your YouTube Music login is your Google Account, the same one you use for YouTube. Open the app, choose to sign in and pick or add that account. If it fails, update or reinstall the app, check you're using a Google Account, and restart your device.
YouTube Music login trips people up for a simple reason: there isn't a separate YouTube Music account. You sign in with the same Google Account you use for YouTube, so when the login goes wrong the cause is usually the account, the device or the app, not the music service itself. If you play background music in your shop, studio or office, a login that won't stick is more than an annoyance. Here's what YouTube's help pages say, in the order I'd work through it.
A quick note on what I can and can't promise. YouTube Music doesn't have a single help article called log in, so I've pulled together YouTube's sign-in help, its help for TVs and consoles, and its YouTube Music troubleshooting page. Menus vary by app version, so if a button is named slightly differently on your phone, trust what you see.
What you need for a YouTube Music login
YouTube's sign-in help says you need a Google Account to sign in to YouTube. YouTube Music works the same way, so the email address and password you use for YouTube are the ones to try. If you're not sure which address you used, think about which one your playlists and likes were saved under. People with a work email and a personal Gmail often have the music on one and the videos on the other.
If you're having trouble signing in at all, YouTube points to its accounts troubleshooting guide, and if you can't sign in on any device, it tells you to recover your Google Account. Recovery is done through Google's own account pages. Don't hand your details, codes or passwords to anyone who offers to get your account back for you.
Signing in to YouTube Music on your phone or tablet
- Open the YouTube Music app.
- Choose the option to sign in, and pick or add the Google Account you want.
- Enter your password and any verification step Google asks for.
Those are the general steps, and the exact wording changes between versions. If the app shows an account you don't recognise, switch accounts before you play anything, because your library and recommendations follow whichever account is selected. My guide to switching accounts on YouTube explains how the same idea works on YouTube itself.
If sign-in keeps failing on a mobile device, YouTube's troubleshooting page suggests this sequence:
- Update the app to the latest version from your app store.
- Uninstall and reinstall the app, even if you already have the latest version.
- Make sure you're using a Google Account to sign in.
- Try adding your Google Account to the phone's own account settings.
YouTube Music login on a smart TV or game console
TV logins are the ones that trip people up most, because typing a password with a remote is miserable. YouTube's TV sign-in help gives you two choices. You can sign in with your phone, by scanning the QR code or going to yt.be/activate on a phone, tablet or computer and entering the code on the screen. Or you can sign in with your remote and the on-screen keyboard. If one option isn't working, try the other.
If the phone route fails, YouTube says to check these:
- Your TV and phone are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Your phone isn't on mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. Turn mobile data off for a moment if you're not sure.
- You typed the activation code correctly.
Still stuck? YouTube suggests unplugging the device for 30 seconds before plugging it back in, rebooting your router and rebooting your mobile device. On smart TVs, streaming devices and consoles, it also suggests updating the app, checking you're using a Google Account, and resetting the app in Settings, which signs you out if you're signed in. One more note: YouTube says signing in directly on older Chromecast devices isn't supported. You control playback from your phone instead. If your TV is the problem, my checklist for when YouTube isn't working is a good next stop.
When YouTube Music asks you to sign in again
Sometimes the login isn't broken, it's a security check. YouTube says you may be asked to re-authenticate before using certain features. The methods it lists are a security key, a prompt sent to your phone, a backup code, or a code sent by SMS if you've added a recovery phone number.
If you hit an Action blocked error, YouTube's advice depends on your device. On Android, stay signed in to the Google Account for 7 or more days. On iPhone or iPad, install Gmail, the Google Search app or the YouTube app and stay signed in for 7 or more days. On other devices, add a recovery phone number to your Google Account and wait 7 or more days. That wait is annoying, but it's what the help page says.
YouTube Music login errors that appear after you've signed in
A few problems look like login trouble but aren't. YouTube Music's troubleshooting page covers these:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Playback paused because this account is being used in another location. YouTube says you can only listen on one device at a time, so pause playback on the other device, then close and restart YouTube Music.
- Premium benefits not working. Make sure you're signed in to the Google Account linked to your Premium membership. If the right account is selected and it still doesn't work, YouTube says to contact its support.
- General problems. Close the app and open it again, then restart your device. YouTube says this resolves many common problems.
If you share one login across a team, the first bullet is the one you'll meet. Two people can't play different things on one account at once, so give each person their own.
Clearing the cache when your YouTube Music login won't work in a browser
If you use YouTube Music in a browser and the page loads oddly or keeps asking you to sign in, clearing the cache and cookies can help. YouTube's help says it can resolve loading and formatting issues. In Chrome the route is More, then Delete browsing data, then choose a time range and Cookies and other site data, then Delete data. Be aware that you'll need to sign in to sites again afterwards, so keep your passwords handy.
On a phone, YouTube's music troubleshooting page suggests clearing the YouTube Music app cache in your device settings, or deleting and redownloading the app.
If your old YouTube username won't sign in to YouTube Music
This one affects people who've had a channel for a long time. YouTube says that if you created your channel in YouTube's early days and haven't signed in for many years, it automatically connected your channel to a Brand Account, and you need to link that Brand Account to an existing Google Account to get back in. The help page also says there's no password recovery option for those old username accounts, which is worth knowing before you spend an afternoon trying.
Signing out of YouTube Music on one device
If the wrong account keeps appearing, sign out and start again. My guide to signing out of YouTube covers the basic idea, and the same account carries across the YouTube apps on that device, so check which account is active before you sign back in.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate account for YouTube Music?
No. YouTube's sign-in help says you need a Google Account to sign in to YouTube, and YouTube Music uses the same Google Account.
Why does YouTube Music say playback paused because my account is being used in another location?
YouTube says you can only listen on one device at a time. Pause playback on the other device, then close and restart YouTube Music.
How do I sign in to YouTube Music on a TV?
Open the app and choose to sign in with your phone, by scanning the QR code or going to yt.be/activate, or use your remote and the on-screen keyboard. If one option fails, try the other.
What if I get an Action blocked error?
YouTube suggests staying signed in to the Google Account on a mobile device for 7 or more days, or adding a recovery phone number and waiting 7 or more days on other devices.
Why are my Premium benefits not working?
Check you're signed in to the Google Account linked to your Premium membership. If that's right and the problem continues, YouTube says to contact support.
Can someone else recover my account for me?
Use Google's own account recovery. Don't share codes or passwords with anyone offering to get your account back.
