There's no separate YouTube Music gift card: you use a YouTube gift card or code. YouTube Music Help says when you redeem it at youtube.com/redeem, it increases your Google Play balance, and you can use that balance to pay for YouTube Music Premium, YouTube Premium, YouTube TV, channel memberships and more.
The Google Play balance step is what catches people out. The card doesn't attach itself to your Music Premium membership automatically. If you already subscribe, you need to switch your payment method to the balance, or your card keeps getting charged and the gift card sits unused.
What a YouTube gift card can pay for
According to YouTube Music Help, once redeemed your balance can pay for:
- YouTube Music Premium
- YouTube Premium
- YouTube TV
- Movies and TV shows on YouTube
- Digital content on Google Play
- Channel memberships
- Super Chats and Super Stickers (on mobile)
How to redeem a gift card for a new Music Premium membership
- Sign in to the Google Account you want to use.
- Go to the URL printed on your card, or youtube.com/redeem.
- Enter the code and click Next.
- Choose what you want to buy, and select Google Play balance as the payment method.
- Click Buy.
Pick the account carefully at step one. The balance lands on that Google Account, so if you redeem on a work or family member's account by mistake, it won't be on yours.
How to use a gift card for a membership you already have
First redeem the code at youtube.com/redeem as above, then make the balance your payment method:
- Sign in to payments.google.com.
- Find your YouTube paid membership and select Manage.
- Under "How you pay", click Change payment method.
- Choose your Google Play balance.
- Click Save.
This is the step most people skip. If you're changing the payment method for other reasons too, how to change your YouTube Premium payment method covers every route.
The country rule that blocks gift cards
YouTube Music Help says the country or region on your Google Account must match the country or region where the gift card is offered. If you see a message that YouTube gift cards aren't valid in your country, check that the card's country matches where you live.
Be careful before you change your home country to make a card work. YouTube warns that if you correct your address or home country in your Google Account, you may not be able to use your existing Google Play credit. So a gift card bought abroad for someone at home is a risk, not a shortcut.
Using your balance for Super Chats and memberships
Because the card becomes Google Play balance, it isn't limited to music. You can put it towards a creator's channel membership, or towards Super Chats and Super Stickers, which YouTube Music Help notes are paid this way on mobile. That makes a YouTube gift card a flexible present for someone who mostly watches rather than listens.
Where cards are sold varies by country. As one example, YouTube Music Help says gift cards in Mexico are sold at many retailers, including many Oxxo locations, in amounts of MX$100, MX$300 or MX$600.

Refunds for gift cards
If you need a refund on the card itself, YouTube Music Help says to contact Amazon or the retailer where it was bought. That's different from a refund on the membership, which goes through YouTube's own refund request process.

My verdict
A YouTube gift card is a perfectly good way to pay for YouTube Music Premium, as long as you treat it as Google Play credit. Redeem it on the right account, then switch your membership's payment method to Google Play balance straight away. And if you're buying one as a present, buy it in the same country the person lives in, or it may not work for them.
