YouTube monetization in Nigeria is open: Nigeria is on YouTube's Partner Program list and on the expanded list, so you can apply from 500 subscribers and earn ad revenue from 1,000. The surprise for Nigerian creators is tax: with no US treaty row for Nigeria, Google withholds 30% of earnings from US viewers, so the US share of your audience matters more than you'd think.
Nigerian creators are often told YouTube 'doesn't pay in Nigeria'. That's out of date. YouTube's own lists include Nigeria for the Partner Program and for most fan funding tools, and payments reach Nigerian bank accounts by wire. What trips people up is what happens between YouTube Studio and your bank, so that's where I'll spend most of this page.
What YouTube lists for creators based in Nigeria
| YouTube programme or feature | Nigeria on the list? |
|---|---|
| YouTube Partner Program | Yes |
| Expanded YPP from 500 subscribers | Yes |
| Super Chat and Super Stickers | Yes |
| Channel memberships | Yes |
| Super Thanks | Yes |
| Shopping affiliate program | No |
So nearly everything's open, with one gap. The Shopping affiliate program is limited to a short list of countries, and Nigeria isn't on it. If you review gadgets or beauty products, plan on brand deals and your own links rather than YouTube's product tagging.
How a Nigerian channel qualifies, level by level
YouTube runs two levels in countries on its expanded list.
- Early level: 500 subscribers, 3 valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. This opens fan funding such as memberships, Super Chat and Super Thanks.
- Full level: 1,000 subscribers with 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers with 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. This adds ad revenue sharing.
Fan funding also needs you to be at least 18. And every application goes through YouTube's checks: no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification on, advanced features access and one linked AdSense for YouTube account. Reviews typically take about 1 month, and after a rejection you can appeal within 21 days or reapply after 30 days.
One counting rule catches a lot of Nigerian Shorts creators out. YouTube says watch hours from Shorts don't count towards the 4,000 qualified watch hours, and neither do hours from private, unlisted or deleted videos or from ad campaigns. So if your channel is built on Shorts, track the Shorts views route in YouTube Studio's Earn tab instead, and keep your best long videos public rather than unlisted while you're building towards the threshold.
Why Nigerian channels lose monetization after joining
Getting in is half the job. YouTube says it may switch off monetization on channels that haven't uploaded or posted for 6 months or more, and it keeps checking channels against its monetization policies. If you've had a channel closed before, my guide on why YouTube channels get terminated explains the patterns to avoid.
Getting YouTube money into a Nigerian bank
YouTube pays through AdSense for YouTube. Google's payment-method table lists cheque and wire transfer as Yes for Nigeria in the YouTube columns, with EFT and Hyperwallet as No. A wire straight to your bank is quicker than waiting for a cheque, so that's the one I'd set up.
- In AdSense for YouTube, open Payments and add a payment method.
- Choose wire transfer and enter your bank's details exactly as your bank holds them, including its SWIFT code.
- Ask your bank how it receives incoming international wires and what it charges, because Google doesn't control that part.
- Check the payout calendar; my explainer on when YouTube pays each month covers the dates.
If you also earn from apps and want local options, I've compared earning apps that pay through OPay or PalmPay in a separate guide.
The US tax rule that hits Nigerian YouTubers harder
Every monetizing creator must give Google US tax info. Without it, Google may deduct up to 24% of your total worldwide earnings. With it, only earnings from US viewers are taxed, at a rate set by your country's treaty with the US.
Here's the Nigeria-specific catch. The IRS treaty table has no row for Nigeria, so the 'Other Countries' row applies, showing 30 in every royalty column. That means a Nigerian creator who submits tax info typically sees 30% taken from the US share, with no treaty claim to bring it down.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Is it still worth submitting? Yes, for most channels. If most of your viewers are in Nigeria and elsewhere outside the US, 30% of a small US share is far less than 24% of everything. Check your US share in YouTube Analytics with a geography filter to see where you stand.
Building income beyond ads on a Nigerian channel
Because fan funding is open in Nigeria, I'd use it early. Memberships suit channels with a loyal core audience, Super Chat suits live shows, and Super Thanks lets viewers tip on a single video they loved. Reading how YouTube pays for live streams can help you decide whether streaming is worth adding to your plan.
My verdict on YouTube monetization in Nigeria
It works, and Nigerian creators get more tools than many think. Aim for the 500-subscriber level with regular uploads, switch on fan funding once you're in, set up a wire to your bank, and submit your US tax info even though there's no treaty discount. Then focus on growing views from the audience you already serve.
Frequently asked questions
Is YouTube monetization available in Nigeria?
Yes. Nigeria is on YouTube's Partner Program availability list and on the expanded YPP list.
Can Nigerian creators get monetized with 500 subscribers?
Yes, at YouTube's early level, which also needs 3 recent public uploads and 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views. Ad revenue needs the full 1,000 subscriber threshold.
How do YouTubers in Nigeria receive their payments?
Through AdSense for YouTube. Google's table lists wire transfer and cheque for Nigeria.
How much US tax does YouTube take in Nigeria?
The IRS treaty table has no Nigeria row, so the 30% rate applies to earnings from US viewers once tax info is submitted. Without tax info Google may deduct up to 24% of total worldwide earnings.
Is the YouTube Shopping affiliate program available in Nigeria?
No. YouTube's country list for the Shopping affiliate program doesn't include Nigeria.
