To export Messenger chat history, open Export your information in Meta Account settings on a computer, create an export to your device, pick what to include and start it. You'll have 4 days to download it. Encrypted chats have a separate Download chat backup option under Chat history.
There are good reasons to keep a copy of a Messenger conversation. Maybe it holds an agreement with a client, the details of an order, a run of messages you may need if something goes wrong, or simply years of memories you don't want to lose. The slightly awkward truth is that Messenger doesn't have a single Export this chat button that I could find described in its help pages. What it does have is an official tool for exporting your information, and a separate download for end-to-end encrypted chats. Here's how both work.
How Messenger chat history export works
Facebook's help centre treats your Messenger messages as part of the information you can export from your account. Its Request a copy of your Messenger data page says to use the Export your information tool in Accounts Center. That tool now sits in Meta Account settings, and the help notes that you may see either Accounts Center or Meta Account settings as the place to manage things. You can export to your device, which means a file you download, or to an external service.
The help describes exporting your information in general terms: you pick what to include. I didn't find a page describing a one-click export of a single named conversation, so I won't promise one. If you only need part of a chat, the best approach is to choose the information types and date range that cover it. If you're simply tidying your inbox rather than saving it, my guide to archiving chats on Messenger is the lighter option.
How to export Messenger chat history from a computer
These are the steps in Facebook's help for exporting to a device:
- Click your profile picture in the top right, then click Settings & privacy.
- Click Settings.
- Click Meta Account, then click Your information and permissions.
- Click Export your information.
- Click Create export.
- Select the profile you'd like to export information from.
- Select Export to device.
- Choose the information you want, plus a date range, format, notification email and media quality.
- Click Start export.
Before the export begins, Facebook's help says you're first asked to enter your password, and you may be asked for extra verification. That's a good thing. It stops someone else from downloading your messages.
Choosing HTML or JSON for your Messenger export
Facebook's help explains the two formats you can choose between. HTML is the easy one to view. You receive a ZIP file, and once it's extracted it contains a file called index that you can open like a web page in your browser, along with folders holding any images and videos you asked for. JSON is a machine-readable format that makes it easier to move your information to another service.
For most people keeping a record of a chat, HTML is the better choice. It reads like a normal page. JSON suits someone with a developer or a tool that needs to process the data.
How long a Messenger export takes and how long you have to download it
Facebook's help says that when your export is ready you'll have 4 days to download it from the Available downloads section of the Export your information tool. If you chose to export to a device, you receive an email notification and a Facebook notification when it's done. The exports can also expire, so don't leave it too long. If you miss the window, you can always request a new one.
Data logs, which cover extra details such as logged interactions, are a separate export. Messenger's help says they take longer, up to 15 days, and that they don't delay the rest of your information, which is typically ready in a few hours. You only need data logs if you want that extra detail, not the messages themselves.
How to download end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats
Encrypted conversations have their own route. Messenger's help says downloading your data from end-to-end encrypted chats is currently available on a computer only. Your data can include the messages you sent and received, plus attachments such as files, images and other media. The steps are:
- On a computer, open facebook.com and click Messenger in the top right.
- Next to Chats, click Options to open your chat settings.
- Click Chat history.
- Click Last backup.
- Click Download chat backup.
If you're not sure which of your conversations are encrypted, that's worth finding out before you start, and my overview of what the Messenger app does is a useful refresher. If a conversation you want is missing from the main export, try this route as well.

Exporting Messenger chats from your phone
The help pages I read give the export steps for a computer, so I'd use one if you can. Menus vary by app version, and if you open Meta Account settings from the Messenger app you may find a similar Export your information option, but I can't confirm the exact wording for every phone. Don't rely on a screenshot alone if the conversation matters. And if the app is misbehaving, updating Messenger first can save a failed attempt.
What to do with your Messenger export once you have it
- Store it somewhere private. Facebook's help warns that an export may contain private information, so take care when you store or send it.
- Don't upload it to a website you don't trust. Only choose an external service you know and recognise.
- Check the file opens before you delete anything from Messenger.
- Keep a note of the date, so you know which period it covers.
If you can't export your Messenger information
Facebook's help gives two reasons you might not be able to export from a profile. The profile may be deactivated, in which case you can reactivate it first. Or it may be scheduled for deletion, in which case you can cancel the deletion to export. If you deleted your profile, the help says you won't be able to access your profile information at all, although a person you messaged may still have their own copy of the conversation, like an email.
One last thing. Don't use apps or sites that promise to pull other people's chats out of your Messenger for you. They can't do what they claim, and they often ask for your login. Stick with the official tools above, and if you get stuck, use the help centre.
