YouTube Live Chat Not Showing? Why and How to Fix It

If YouTube live chat isn't showing, first switch the chat view from Top chat to Live chat using the arrow at the top of the chat. Chat is also off on streams set as made for kids, and edited stream replays lose chat replay. Messages can also be hidden by filters, or held for review by the creator.

A live stream with a blank chat panel, or a chat that seems to skip messages, is usually not a glitch. YouTube's live chat has a filter view switched on, a made-for-kids rule that turns chat off, and a replay feature that disappears if the creator edits the video later. Here's how to tell which one you're hitting, from both the viewer and the creator side.

Fix 1: switch from Top chat to Live chat

YouTube gives viewers two views. Top chat filters messages, such as potential spam, to keep the chat readable. Live chat isn't filtered and shows every message as it arrives. If messages you expect aren't appearing, including your own, the filter is the first suspect.

  1. Find the chat panel next to or under the stream.
  2. Click the down arrow at the top of the chat.
  3. Select Live chat (or All chat) instead of Top chat.

YouTube says Top chat may leave out messages it detects as potentially inappropriate, spam or impersonation, based on signals like the text, the commenter's name or handle, their avatar and the channel's moderation settings.

Why there's no chat at all

ReasonWhat's happening
The stream is made for kidsLive chat is off by default for made-for-kids audiences
The creator turned chat offChat is on by default, but creators can switch chat off
You're watching a replay of an edited streamEdited streams lose chat replay
Chat is collapsedThe panel is hidden; open it from the player or page
Subscriber-only chatYou can see chat but may not be able to post unless subscribed

Chat replay missing after the stream

When a stream ends, YouTube archives it so people can watch it with the chat alongside, replayed as it happened. That's the default. The catch, which even creators often don't know: YouTube says live streams edited in the video editor won't have chat replay, and that applies to every type of edit. So trimming the dead air at the start of a stream can wipe out the chat replay for everyone.

Live polls are another gap. YouTube says they don't appear in chat replays at all, so a poll your audience remembers won't be there when you rewatch.

Your own message isn't showing

  • It was held for review. Creators can hold messages, and YouTube says that if no action is taken, held messages stay hidden from viewers.
  • Top chat filtered it. Switch to Live chat and look again.
  • The chat is subscriber-only. Creators can limit chat to subscribers.
  • You've been hidden or blocked by the channel. Your messages won't appear to others.

For creators: check your settings

If your viewers say they can't see or use chat, check these in YouTube Studio before you go live:

  1. Your audience setting. Made for kids turns live chat off.
  2. Chat is switched on for the stream.
  3. Moderation filters aren't holding too many messages. Review held messages during the stream.
  4. If you want chat replay, publish the stream without editing it in the video editor.

If you embed live chat on your own website, YouTube says embedding isn't available on mobile web, and the domain in the embed link has to match the page exactly, or the chat won't open.

Chat looks different for creators and moderators

If you moderate a channel and see translated messages that viewers say they can't read, that's by design. YouTube automatically translates chat messages that aren't in your app's display language, but only on the creator's and moderators' devices. Viewers still see the original message. Creators can switch this off in chat Settings with the Automatic chat translation toggle.

New viewers may also see an AI-generated summary of the chat when they join. YouTube describes it as experimental, says not every stream gets one, and lets creators turn it off in the Live Control Room under Customization. If a summary appears instead of the chat you expected, scroll the panel or switch views.

Still blank? Try the basics

Refresh the page, try the YouTube app instead of the browser, or switch browser. Ad blockers and privacy extensions sometimes stop the chat frame loading on a computer, so try a private window with extensions off. On the phone app, check whether the chat has been collapsed below the player, and try turning the phone sideways and back, since the layout changes with orientation. If videos themselves won't play smoothly, it's a connection problem first: my guide to YouTube videos not playing covers it. For trolls in your own chat, see managing blocked and hidden users on YouTube.

My verdict

Viewers: switch the chat to Live chat before assuming it's broken, and remember made-for-kids streams have no chat. Creators: avoid editing a stream in the video editor if your chat replay matters, and keep an eye on held messages, because anything you don't approve stays hidden. A quick check of these settings before you go live saves a lot of confused comments afterwards.
