The short version: a blank YouTube home page is almost always caused by browser or app cache problems, an ad blocker interfering with the feed, a logged-out or restricted account, or YouTube still building your recommendations after a reset. Clear the cache, check your extensions, and give the algorithm a day or two to rebuild your feed before you assume something is broken.
I spend a fair chunk of my week in YouTube Studio for clients, checking analytics and watching how content performs across different regions in the UK, US and worldwide. So when the home page goes blank, white screen, spinning wheel, or just rows of grey placeholder boxes that never load, I know it's rarely YouTube itself that's down. It's almost always something local to your device or your account.
The most common causes, in order of likelihood
Before you panic or start reinstalling the app, work through these in order. Most people fix it on step two or three.
- Corrupted cache or cookies - this is the number one cause. Your browser or app has stored a broken version of the page and keeps serving it to you instead of fetching a fresh one.
- Ad blockers and privacy extensions - uBlock Origin, Ghostery, and some VPN browser extensions can block the scripts YouTube needs to populate the home feed, leaving you with a blank page instead of just removed ads.
- A new or recently reset account - if you've just created a YouTube account, cleared your watch history, or switched off personalised recommendations, YouTube has nothing to show you yet. This isn't a fault, it's YouTube waiting for data.
- Restricted Mode or a managed account - family link accounts, school accounts, and workplace Google Workspace accounts sometimes restrict the home feed entirely, showing a blank page rather than an error message.
- App or browser version out of date - YouTube updates its front end constantly, and an old app build can fail to render the home feed.
- Network or DNS issues - if your connection is slow or your DNS provider is having problems, YouTube's layout can load while the video thumbnails and data never arrive.
A worked example: the "it's definitely broken" scenario
Say you run a small bakery and you've started a YouTube channel to show behind-the-scenes baking content. You open YouTube on your laptop one morning and the home page is completely white, no thumbnails, no subscriptions row, nothing. You assume YouTube is down, so you check Downdetector and it says everything's fine. Annoying.
Here's what's happening in a case like this nine times out of ten: you installed an ad blocker extension last week because the pre-roll ads were getting on your nerves while researching competitor bakery channels. That extension is now blocking the JavaScript calls YouTube's home page makes to fetch your recommended videos. The layout loads because it's static HTML, but the content never arrives because the scripts that fetch it got blocked along with the ads.
The fix takes under two minutes: open your extensions list, disable the ad blocker for youtube.com specifically (most blockers let you whitelist a single site), refresh the page, and the feed populates instantly. You don't need to uninstall the extension, just tell it to leave YouTube alone.
Step-by-step fix: work through this exact order
- Hard refresh the page. On Windows press Ctrl+Shift+R, on Mac press Cmd+Shift+R. This forces the browser to ignore cached files and pull everything fresh.
- Disable extensions one at a time. Start with ad blockers and VPN extensions, since these are the most frequent culprits. Reload YouTube after disabling each one.
- Clear YouTube's specific cookies. In Chrome, go to Settings, Privacy and Security, Cookies, and search for youtube.com to clear just that site's data rather than wiping your whole browser history.
- Log out and back in. This resets your session token and often clears whatever glitch was stopping the feed from rendering.
- Try a different browser or incognito mode. If YouTube works fine in an incognito window, the problem is almost certainly a cookie, cache, or extension issue in your normal browser.
- Update the app. On mobile, check your app store for a pending YouTube update. Google pushes frequent small updates and an outdated build can break the home feed rendering.
- Check Restricted Mode. Scroll to the bottom of any YouTube page, click your account icon, and check whether Restricted Mode is switched on. Turn it off if you don't need it.
- Wait it out if you're a new account. If you created the account in the last 24 to 48 hours, the home feed simply hasn't got enough signal yet. Watch five or six videos in a niche you're interested in and the feed will start populating within a day.
The uncomfortable bit nobody tells you
Here's something most troubleshooting guides skip over: sometimes the blank home page isn't a bug at all, it's YouTube deliberately throttling your recommendations because your watch history looks suspicious to its systems. If you've been using bot-like behaviour, watching in short bursts through a VPN that keeps switching location, or you've reported a lot of videos in a short window, YouTube can quietly reduce what it shows you on the home page rather than ban you outright. There's no notification for this. The page just goes quiet. If none of the standard fixes work and you've been doing anything unusual with your account behaviour, that's worth considering before you spend another hour clearing cache.
I've also seen people confuse a blank home page with a channel homepage that looks sparse because of layout settings rather than a technical fault, and those are two completely different problems with two completely different fixes, which is exactly why I wrote a separate piece on why your YouTube channel homepage might look blank covering the channel-management side of things.
If you're managing a channel, not just watching one
If you're the one running the channel and it's your own channel homepage that's showing blank to visitors, rather than your personal YouTube home feed, the cause list is different. That's usually a missing channel trailer, no featured sections set up, or a layout setting that hasn't been configured in YouTube Studio. I've covered the exact steps for that in a guide on how to change your YouTube layout, which walks through setting up sections, trailers and featured content so visitors see something worthwhile the moment they land.
And if you're building out a content calendar once your page is working again, it's worth knowing where to source material. I keep a running list of free b-roll for YouTube videos and a separate one on free music for YouTube and Instagram so you're not paying licensing fees for stock footage and tracks you don't need to.

When it's worth checking YouTube's own status
Before you assume it's your setup, it is worth a quick check of Google's own Workspace Status Dashboard or a site like Downdetector if the problem is affecting multiple devices and multiple accounts at once. Genuine YouTube-wide outages do happen, though they're rare and usually resolved within an hour or two. If the home page is blank on your phone, your laptop, and a friend's device all at the same time, that's a platform issue, not a you issue, and no amount of cache clearing will fix it faster than just waiting.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my YouTube home page show no videos at all?
The most common cause is a corrupted browser cache or an ad blocker extension interfering with the scripts that load your recommended videos. Clear your cache, whitelist YouTube in any ad blocker, and refresh the page before trying anything more complicated.
Is a blank YouTube home page a sign my account has been banned?
Not usually. A ban typically comes with an on-screen message explaining the restriction. A blank home page is far more often a technical glitch, though YouTube can quietly throttle recommendations for accounts showing unusual activity without telling you directly.
Why is my YouTube home page blank on mobile but fine on desktop?
This points to the app specifically, not your account or network. Update the YouTube app through your app store, clear its cache in your phone's app settings, and restart your phone if the problem continues.
How long should I wait before worrying about a blank home page?
If you've just made your account or cleared your watch history, give it 24 to 48 hours while you watch a handful of videos to rebuild your recommendation data. If the page is still blank after working through the cache, cookies, and extension checks, it's worth checking Google's status dashboard for a wider outage.
