You usually can't see replies on X (formerly Twitter) because of muted or blocked accounts, quality filters hiding low-signal replies, app glitches, poor connection, or the account being private, suspended, or restricted. Try refreshing, clearing cache, checking filters, updating the app, or opening the tweet in a browser. Most cases are settings or connection issues, not permanent bans.
Why This Happens More Than You Think
I get asked this a lot. You open a tweet, you know there were replies, and then nothing. Just the original post sitting there looking lonely.
It is rarely one single cause. X (formerly Twitter) has several layers that can hide replies from you, and most people never dig into them.
Below are the nine reasons I see most often, plus what fixes each one.
1. You Have Muted or Blocked the Account
If you have muted someone, their replies still exist but X hides them from your view by default. Same with blocking, though blocking is more final.
Check your muted accounts list under Settings and Privacy, then Privacy and Safety, then Muted Accounts. Unmute if you want to see that person again.
This is the most common reason and the easiest to fix.
2. Quality Filters Are Hiding Low Quality Replies
X runs a quality filter that hides replies it thinks are spam, duplicate content, or low effort. This runs quietly in the background.
You can turn it off. Go to Settings, then Privacy and Safety, then Mute and Block, then Quality Filter, and switch it off.
Once off, you will see more replies, including ones you might not have wanted to see in the first place.
3. The Replying Account Is Private or Suspended
If someone replies to a public tweet but their account is private, and you do not follow them, you will not see their reply.
Suspended or deactivated accounts also disappear from reply threads entirely. Their replies vanish as if they were never posted.
There is no fix here. This is intentional and you cannot see private replies without following the account.
4. App Glitches and Cache Problems
Sometimes it is simply a bug. Apps hold onto old data and do not always refresh.
- Force close the X app completely
- Clear the app cache in your phone settings
- Reopen the app and check the thread again
- If it still fails, log out and log back in
This solves the problem more often than people expect. I have had replies reappear within seconds of clearing cache.
5. Poor Internet Connection
Replies load separately from the main tweet in many cases. A weak signal can load the tweet but fail to pull in the thread underneath it.
Switch from mobile data to wifi, or the other way round, and reload the page.
If you are on a train or somewhere with patchy signal, this is often the entire explanation.
6. Outdated App Version
Old versions of the app sometimes have bugs that newer versions fix. If you have not updated in a while, that could be your issue.
Check your app store for pending updates. Install them, restart the app, and try the thread again.
I know this sounds basic, but it is overlooked constantly.

7. You Are Using a Web Browser Instead of the App, or Vice Versa
Sometimes the app fails to load a thread but the browser version works fine. Other times it is reversed.
Try switching platforms. Open the same tweet link in a browser if you were using the app, or the other way round.
This is a quick test that takes seconds and often reveals whether it is a platform specific glitch.
8. The Reply Was Deleted
If someone deleted their reply, it will simply not be there anymore. This is not a bug or a setting issue, it is just gone.
You cannot recover deleted replies through X. There is no built in way to view removed content.
If you saw a reply earlier and it vanished, deletion is the most likely explanation.
9. Your Account Has Restrictions Applied
X sometimes applies limits to accounts flagged for unusual activity, spam reports, or policy issues. This can affect what you see, not just what you post.
Check Settings, then Support, then look for any notices about your account status.
If your account has restrictions, some content, including replies, may be limited until the restriction is lifted. I cannot tell you how long that takes because X does not publish fixed timelines for this.
What To Do When Nothing Works
If you have tried all of the above and replies are still missing, it is worth reporting the issue directly to X through their support channels.
Take a screenshot of the thread and note the time you noticed the issue. This helps if you need to explain the problem later.
I would not spend hours troubleshooting beyond this point. Sometimes it is a temporary server issue on their end, and it resolves itself within a day or two without you doing anything.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I see replies on Twitter at all?
Usually it is muted accounts, quality filters, a private replying account, or an app glitch. Check your mute list first, then try clearing the app cache and reloading the thread.
Can I see replies from a private account I do not follow?
No, this cannot be done. If the account replying to a tweet is private and you do not follow them, their reply stays hidden from your view entirely.
Does the quality filter delete replies permanently?
No. The quality filter only hides replies from your view, it does not delete them. Turning the filter off in your privacy settings will reveal replies again.
Why did a reply I saw earlier disappear?
The most likely reason is that the person deleted their own reply. There is no way to recover or view deleted replies through X.
