Why Are My Instagram Comments Not Showing (Fixed)

The short version: the most common cause is a filter setting, either your own Hide Comments setting or a keyword filter you or Instagram applied, quietly hiding comments before they display. The first fix is to check Settings, then Privacy, then Comments, and review both Hidden Words and Manual Filters. If those look clear, the next most likely cause is that the comments were removed for breaking a guideline, or the post itself has comments switched off entirely.

The most likely cause: a comment filter you already have switched on

Instagram gives every account a built in filter under Settings, Privacy, Comments, that automatically hides comments containing certain words, phone numbers, or patterns that look like spam. This filter is turned on by default for most accounts and it does not tell you when it removes something, it simply keeps the comment out of view unless you go looking for it. A large number of "missing comments" cases come down to this single setting quietly doing its job, especially on accounts that turned on the strongest filter setting, called Hide Offensive Comments, without realising how broad it can be.

How to check whether a filter is the cause

  1. Go to Settings and Privacy, then Comments, and look at Hide Comments. If this is switched on, some comments containing flagged words or patterns are being hidden automatically, even from people who are not spammers.
  2. Check Hidden Words in the same menu. This shows a default list plus any words you have added yourself. A comment containing any word here, even part of a longer word, gets filtered out silently.
  3. Check Manual Filter, also in the same menu, for specific words or phrases you or a previous account manager may have added.
  4. Open the post in question, tap the comment icon, and look for a small link that says "View hidden comments" near the bottom of the thread. Many people miss this and assume the comments never arrived at all, when they are simply sitting behind that link.

It is worth separating a comment that has been filtered from one that was never posted successfully in the first place. A slow connection at the moment someone hits send can produce a comment that looks like it sent on the commenter's screen but never reached Instagram's servers at all, which is a connectivity issue rather than anything to do with your account or settings. Asking the commenter to check their own connection and try again from a different network rules this out quickly before you spend time working through the settings below.

Other common causes beyond filters

  • Comments turned off entirely for that specific post. When creating or editing a post, there is a toggle for Allow Comments under Advanced Settings, and if this was switched off, no comments will show at all regardless of any filter.
  • The commenter has been restricted or blocked by your account, either on purpose or by mistake. Restricted accounts' comments only show to the commenter themselves, not to you or anyone else, which makes it look like the comment vanished.
  • The comment was removed by Instagram directly for breaking Community Guidelines, which happens automatically for certain content without a notification always reaching the original poster.
  • A temporary bug or delay in Instagram's own systems, most noticeable straight after posting, when comments can take a minute or two to fully sync and display for everyone.
  • The commenter's own account has been restricted by Instagram, meaning their comments are automatically hidden across the platform, not just on your posts.

Fix it on iPhone

  1. Open Instagram, tap your profile, then the menu icon, then Settings and Privacy, then Comments.
  2. Turn off Hide Comments temporarily to test whether comments reappear, then decide whether to turn a lighter version back on afterwards.
  3. Review and edit Hidden Words, removing any word that is too broad, such as a common word that happens to also appear in an offensive term.
  4. Go to the specific post, tap the three dots, and confirm Comments are switched on under the post's own settings rather than only checking the account wide setting.
  5. Check your Restricted list under Settings, Privacy, then Restricted Accounts, and remove anyone you did not mean to restrict.

Fix it on Android

  1. The menu path is identical to iPhone: Settings and Privacy, then Comments, to review Hide Comments, Hidden Words, and Manual Filter.
  2. Android users should also check Settings, Apps, Instagram, Permissions, and confirm Notifications are allowed, since a blocked notification permission can make it look like comments are missing when they have simply not triggered an alert.
  3. Force stop the app under Settings, Apps, Instagram, Force Stop, then reopen it, since a stuck background process occasionally delays comments from syncing on Android.

Why this feels worse on business and creator accounts

Accounts set up as a Business or Creator profile, rather than a personal account, tend to attract more spam and low quality comments simply because they are public by default and often linked to a website or contact button that makes them a target. Instagram's filtering leans more aggressively on these account types for that reason, which means a genuine comment from a real customer or follower is statistically more likely to get caught by the Hidden Words list on a business account than on a personal one with the same settings. If you run a Business or Creator account and comments feel like they vanish more often than they should, reviewing the default Hidden Words list rather than only your own additions is worth doing, since some of the default entries are broader than most people expect.

Check it on desktop

Instagram's desktop site through a browser at instagram.com shows the same comment thread as the app, including the "Hidden comments" link if filters have caught something. Desktop is a useful second check because it loads the full comment thread without some of the app's caching quirks, so if comments look missing on your phone, refreshing the same post on a desktop browser is a quick way to confirm whether it is a display issue on your device or the comments truly are not there.

What does not fix it

  • Deleting and reposting the entire post to "reset" comments does not address a filter setting and loses any genuine engagement the post had already earned.
  • Logging out and back in does not change what a comment filter has already hidden.
  • Restarting your phone will not restore a comment that was removed for breaking a guideline or hidden by a keyword filter.
  • Changing your account from private to public and back has no effect on comment visibility settings.
  • Asking the commenter to delete and retype the same comment usually produces the same result if the same word or pattern triggers the filter again.

When to contact support

Contact Instagram support through Settings, Help, Report a Problem, if you have checked Hide Comments, Hidden Words, Manual Filter, and the Restricted list, comments are switched on for the post, and comments are still not appearing for anyone. This points to a bug rather than a setting, and reporting it with a screenshot of the affected post gives Instagram's team something concrete to check. If a specific commenter says their comment disappeared but you cannot find it anywhere, including under View Hidden Comments, ask them to check whether their own account has a restriction notice, since that is often the real explanation rather than anything on your side.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I see a comment in my notifications but not on the actual post?

This usually means the comment was hidden by a filter after the notification was already sent, since the notification and the display filter run at slightly different points. Check View Hidden Comments on the post itself, since the comment is very likely sitting there rather than deleted entirely.

Does turning off Hide Comments stop all moderation on my posts?

No. Turning off Hide Comments removes Instagram's automatic keyword based filtering, but Instagram's own Community Guidelines enforcement still applies separately, and clearly abusive or policy breaking comments can still be removed by Instagram regardless of your personal filter setting.

Can someone tell if I have hidden or restricted their comment?

With a straightforward hide through the comment's own three dot menu, no, the person cannot tell, since their comment still appears as normal on their own view of the post. With Restrict, the same applies: the restricted person sees their comments as visible on their end, with no notification that anything has changed.

Why do only some comments show up while others from the same person disappear?

This points to a keyword filter catching specific comments rather than a block on the whole account, since a full block or restriction would hide everything from that person consistently rather than some comments and not others.

Do comments disappear automatically after a certain amount of time?

No. Instagram does not remove comments purely based on age. A comment that is visible today will remain visible indefinitely unless it is deleted by the commenter, removed by you, hidden by a filter, or taken down by Instagram for breaking a guideline.
