DaFont has the biggest free comic font collection, with 1,374 fonts in its Comic category when I checked, but only 221 pass its completely free or open licence filter, and the famous lettering fonts like Badaboom BB and Anime Ace BB are personal use only. For commercial work, Google Fonts has open source comic styles: Bangers, Comic Neue, Comic Relief and Luckiest Guy.
Comic fonts cover two different jobs. One is lettering: the speech bubbles and captions in a webcomic, manga or graphic novel. The other is the fun look: kids' brands, party invites, YouTube thumbnails and anything that wants to feel like a Saturday morning cartoon. Both have good free options, but the most famous comic fonts have the tightest licences.
DaFont's Comic category
DaFont files these under Fancy, then Comic. On 28 October the category held 1,374 fonts, and the completely free plus Public domain, GPL or OFL filter left 221. The top of the popularity list is almost entirely personal use:
| Font | Designer | Downloads on DaFont | Licence shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Badaboom BB | Blambot | 8,037,874 | Personal use |
| Komika Axis | Vigilante Typeface Corporation | 4,447,813 | Personal use |
| The Amazing Spider-Man | SpideRaYsfoNtS | 3,281,206 | Personal use |
| Anime Ace BB | Blambot | 2,718,311 | Personal use |
| Hey Comic | Khurasan | 2,204,698 | Personal use |
| Manga Temple | Blambot | 1,499,981 | Personal use |
All three Blambot fonts in that list (Badaboom, Anime Ace and Manga Temple) are personal use, so if your comic is going to print or sale, check the designer's own licence terms before you letter a single page.
Completely free comic fonts (and a trap in the same family)
Filter for completely free and some popular names appear. Bakso Sapi by Locomotype has over 3.8 million downloads. Barber Chop by Eko Bimantara, Comic Helvetic by Alexander Pravdin, Super Comic by fsuarez913 and Futura Handwritten by Billy Snyder are all labelled completely free.
Here's the trap. Komika Title and Komika Text, by Vigilante Typeface Corporation, are completely free. Komika Axis, from the same designer and with a very similar name, is personal use only. Khurasan is the same story: Hey Comic is personal use, while Mabook, Cakecafe, Next Sunday and Ngaco are completely free. Check the licence on the exact font you download, not the family or the designer.
Open source comic fonts on Google Fonts
Every family in Google's own font list is flagged open source, and these are the comic picks, described in their own words:
| Font | What it's for | Styles |
|---|---|---|
| Bangers | Mid-20th century superhero comic cover lettering | 1 |
| Comic Neue | A tidier reinterpretation of Comic Sans | 6 |
| Comic Relief | Metrically equivalent to Comic Sans MS, so it swaps in without reflowing text | 2 |
| Luckiest Guy | Heavyweight lettering inspired by 1950s adverts | 1 |
| Chewy | A fun display face its notes describe as one you can sink your teeth into | 1 |
Comic Relief is the clever one. It was only added to Google Fonts in April 2025, and because it matches Comic Sans MS metrics, you can swap it into an old document or template without moving or resizing anything. Comic Neue is the better pick if you want the same friendly feel with six styles, including bold and italic.
For a retro game-style panel, pixel fonts add the right look.
Can you sell a comic lettered with a free font?
With an open source font such as Bangers or Comic Neue, yes. The OFL FAQ says open fonts can be used for any kind of design work, including books and other print publications, with no extra permission. You just can't sell the font file by itself.
With a DaFont font marked personal use, you'll need the designer's permission or a commercial licence. DaFont's FAQ is clear that the licence line is only an indication, so the readme and the designer's own site have the final word, and if no licence is shown at all, that doesn't make the font free.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Spooky lettering for a comic cover is easier with Halloween fonts.
Lettering a comic with a free font
- Choose one font for dialogue and keep it for the whole comic. Readers notice when lettering changes.
- Use a heavier font such as Bangers or Luckiest Guy for titles and sound effects only.
- Type all the punctuation you'll need. DaFont's FAQ warns that free fonts don't always include accented letters or figures.
- Set dialogue in capitals if the font has no lowercase, and keep the size the same on every page.
- Save the licence line with your project in case you print or sell the comic later.

My advice
For a personal webcomic or a one-off party invite, use whatever comic font you love. For anything you'll sell, from a printed comic to a kids' brand, start with Bangers for impact and Comic Neue for readable dialogue, or one of the completely free DaFont fonts. And treat famous names with care. The most downloaded comic fonts are free to try, not free to sell with. And if your school or office runs on old Comic Sans templates, Comic Relief lets you switch without redoing a single layout.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I get free comic fonts?
DaFont's Comic category had 1,374 fonts when checked, with 221 passing its completely free or open filter. Google Fonts has open source comic styles including Bangers, Comic Neue, Comic Relief and Luckiest Guy.
Is Badaboom BB free for commercial use?
DaFont labels Badaboom BB, Anime Ace BB and Manga Temple by Blambot as free for personal use. For a comic you'll sell, check Blambot's own licence terms first.
Is there a free alternative to Comic Sans?
Yes. Comic Neue reinterprets Comic Sans with six styles, and Comic Relief is metrically equivalent to Comic Sans MS, so it replaces it without reflowing text. Both are open source on Google Fonts.
What font is used for comic book lettering?
There's no single font. Popular lettering fonts include Blambot's Anime Ace BB and Badaboom BB, which are personal use on DaFont, and Bangers on Google Fonts, which is open source.
Are all fonts from one designer under the same licence?
No. Komika Title and Komika Text are completely free while Komika Axis from the same designer is personal use, so check each font's own licence line.
