DaFont's Pixel and Bitmap section is the biggest free source, with 1,557 fonts when I checked, and 919 of them pass its completely free or open licence filter, far more than most font styles. For anything you'll sell or ship in a game, Google Fonts has open source pixel families such as Press Start 2P, VT323, Silkscreen, Pixelify Sans and DotGothic16.
Pixel fonts are everywhere: indie game menus, Twitch overlays, YouTube thumbnails, retro merch, tech brand logos. They're also one of the easier styles to get free and legal, because pixel font makers have a long habit of sharing their work. You just need to know where the licence sits and how to size them so they stay crisp.
DaFont: the one style where most fonts are free
DaFont keeps pixel fonts in their own section, Bitmap, which held 1,557 fonts on 28 October. Its filter for completely free plus Public domain, GPL or OFL left 919. In the typewriter, stencil, comic, serif, Halloween and horror categories, the same filter kept under a quarter of the fonts. For pixel fonts it keeps more than half.
DaFont also lists the native pixel size next to each bitmap font, which is the pixel grid the font is built on. Minecraftia is drawn at 8 px, Minecraft at 16 px and VCR OSD Mono at 21 px. Use that number or a multiple of it.
| Font | Designer | Native size | Licence shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | Craftron Gaming | 16 px | Completely free |
| VCR OSD Mono | Riciery Leal | 21 px | Completely free |
| Kiwi Soda | jeti | 16 px | Public domain, GPL or OFL |
| Pixel Operator | Jayvee Enaguas | 16 px | Public domain, GPL or OFL |
| Daydream | DoubleGum | 21 px | Personal use |
| Minecraftia | Andrew Tyler | 8 px | Personal use |
Dogica by Roberto Mocci and W95FA by MadeByArne are also listed under Public domain, GPL or OFL. Press Start 2P turns up on DaFont too, labelled completely free, but it's also on Google Fonts as open source, and that's the copy I'd download.
The Minecraft font is the runaway favourite: over 5.2 million downloads, with 5,064 of them the day before I checked. It's labelled completely free, but a font named after a game gives you the letter shapes, not the right to use the game's name or logo on your product.
Font Squirrel: small list, check the icons
Font Squirrel's Pixel classification showed only 8 fonts, and the licence icons split them clearly. Munro, Silkscreen and VT323 were marked for all four uses: commercial graphics, websites, ebooks and PDFs, and apps. The other five, including CC Overbyte, Unibody 8 and uni 05_53, were marked for commercial desktop graphics only, so not for embedding in a website, PDF or game.
That matters if you're building a game or an app. A font you can use in a poster isn't automatically one you can ship inside software.
Open source pixel fonts on Google Fonts
Every family in Google's font list is flagged open source, and the pixel ones come with good stories in their own descriptions:
- Press Start 2P: based on 1980s Namco arcade lettering, and its notes say it works best at 8 px, 16 px and other multiples of 8.
- VT323: made from the glyphs of the DEC VT320 text terminal.
- Silkscreen: a pixel face designed in 1999 for small web graphics, with regular and bold weights.
- Pixelify Sans: a blocky pixel family with four styles, handy when you need more than one weight.
- DotGothic16: based on an old 16x16 Gothic bitmap font, with Japanese support.
- Sixtyfour and Workbench: reworks of Commodore 64 and Amiga Workbench fonts, with a Scanlines setting for an old CRT look.
- Micro 5: a teeny-tiny face from Google's Soft Type Collection, which was designed for knitters charting text onto their projects.
Google also added Geist Pixel in June 2026, so the collection is still growing.
A haunted arcade screen calls for spooky fonts as well.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Keeping pixel fonts sharp
- Find the font's native size (DaFont lists it, Press Start 2P names 8 px) and use that size or an exact multiple.
- Turn off anti-aliasing or smoothing in your design or game engine if it offers that setting, so edges stay hard.
- Snap text to whole pixels. Half-pixel positions blur the letters.
- Export thumbnails and overlays at full size rather than scaling a small image up.
- Test on a phone: pixel fonts at the wrong size look fuzzy rather than retro.
Want pixel art to match the lettering? I compared the best pixel art apps, and there's a guide to making AI pixel art for free. If you want the wider vintage look, the free retro fonts guide covers neon and arcade styles too.
My advice
For a game or app, pick from Google Fonts or Font Squirrel's three all-uses fonts (Munro, Silkscreen, VT323), because shipping a font inside software is where licences bite. For thumbnails and stream graphics, DaFont's completely free pixel fonts are fine, and there are hundreds. Whatever you choose, respect the grid. A pixel font at its native size looks deliberate. At a random size it just looks broken.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I download free pixel fonts?
DaFont's Bitmap section had 1,557 pixel fonts when checked, with 919 passing its completely free or open filter. Google Fonts has open source options such as Press Start 2P, VT323, Silkscreen, Pixelify Sans and DotGothic16.
Is the Minecraft font free?
DaFont labels the Minecraft font by Craftron Gaming completely free, and it's the most downloaded pixel font there. The font doesn't give you rights to the game's name or logo.
What size should a pixel font be?
Use its native size or an exact multiple. DaFont lists the size next to each bitmap font, and Press Start 2P's own notes say it works best at 8 px, 16 px and other multiples of 8.
Can I use a free pixel font in a game I sell?
Check the licence for app embedding. On Font Squirrel only Munro, Silkscreen and VT323 in the pixel list were marked for apps. Google Fonts families are open source and allowed in software.
Why does my pixel font look blurry?
It's usually at the wrong size, smoothed by anti-aliasing, or placed on a half pixel. Use the native size or a multiple, turn off smoothing where you can, and snap text to whole pixels.
