The short version: Google AI Studio for the Gemini API, Cloudflare Workers AI and OpenRouter's free models are the best places to get a free AI API key in 2026. They're great for testing and small tools, but on Gemini's free tier your content is used to improve Google's products, so don't send anything private through it.
A free AI API key lets you build your own chatbot, automate a writing task or plug AI into a spreadsheet without committing to anything. For creators and small businesses, it's the quickest way to find out whether an AI idea is worth building for real. Each provider gives you something slightly different, and the limits and data rules matter more than the model names.
Where to get a free AI API key
In no particular order:
- Google AI Studio (Gemini API): best for getting started quickly with a free tier and generous limits.
- Cloudflare Workers AI: best for running models inside apps you already host on Cloudflare.
- OpenRouter: best for trying many models through one key, including free models.
- Groq: best for trying the models it hosts, with limits set at organisation level.
- Hugging Face: best for experimenting with open models from the community.
Free AI API options side by side
| Provider | Free option | Limit to know |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini API | Free tier | Limits per project, daily requests reset at midnight Pacific time |
| Cloudflare Workers AI | Free allocation | 10,000 Neurons per day, reset at 00:00 UTC |
| OpenRouter | Free models | Daily cap on free-model requests |
| Groq | Not stated | Rate limits apply per organisation |
| Hugging Face | Not stated | Check its own pages |
Free limits change often, so check the provider's own page the day you start building.
How the main free options work
Google says you can start building with the Gemini API for free with generous limits, through Google AI Studio. Its rate limits page explains that limits are measured in requests per minute, tokens per minute and requests per day, that they apply per project rather than per API key, and that daily request quotas reset at midnight Pacific time. For example, if your limit is 20 requests a minute, the 21st request in that minute returns an error.
Cloudflare says Workers AI is included in both its free and higher Workers plans, and its free allocation lets anyone use 10,000 Neurons per day. Neurons are Cloudflare's way of measuring the compute a request uses, and all limits reset daily at 00:00 UTC. OpenRouter gives you one key for many models, including free models with a daily request cap.
The data catch and the limits that trip people up
Here's the line most people skim past. On Google's own comparison table for the Gemini API, the free tier is marked as content used to improve its products, while the upgraded tier is marked as not used. So the free tier is perfect for testing with made-up or public data, and the wrong place for client documents, customer emails or anything confidential.
The second catch is how limits are counted. Gemini's limits apply per project, not per key, so making extra keys in the same project won't give you more requests. OpenRouter says the same thing more bluntly: making additional accounts or API keys won't affect your rate limits, because capacity is governed globally. Groq applies rate limits at organisation level rather than to individual users.
And if you're following an older tutorial, check the provider still exists. GitHub's documentation says GitHub Models was fully retired on 30 July 2026, so guides that start there won't work anymore.
How to get started with a free key
- Decide what you're testing and use sample or public data, never private information.
- Create a key in Google AI Studio, Cloudflare or OpenRouter.
- Store the key in an environment variable, never in a public file or shared document.
- Read the provider's rate limits page and build in a pause when you hit an error.
- Log how many requests your tool makes a day, so you know if it will outgrow the free limits.
- Review the data terms again before you connect anything real.
Good first projects for a free key
The best first projects are small, repeatable jobs where you can check every answer. A tool that rewrites product descriptions in your brand voice, a script that sorts customer questions into categories, or a spreadsheet formula that summarises survey comments are all good fits. They use modest numbers of requests and show quickly whether the model does the job. Avoid starting with anything that runs on its own at night or answers customers directly, because free limits can stop it halfway and there's no one watching. Keep a simple log of what you sent and what came back, so you can compare models fairly when you try a second provider. And when a test works, write down how many requests it used in a normal day; that one number tells you whether a free key will keep up or whether it's time to plan the next step.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Building with AI next
If you'd rather try models without code first, my guide on how to use OpenRouter walks through the basics, and how to use the Gemini CLI shows another free route into Gemini. For the everyday app, see how to use Gemini.
My verdict: start with a Gemini key from Google AI Studio for testing, add OpenRouter when you want to compare models, and keep anything private off free tiers. A free key is for proving the idea, not for running your business on.

Google AI Studio offers a free Gemini API tier, Cloudflare Workers AI has a free daily allocation, and OpenRouter offers free models through one key.
Is the Gemini API free?
Google says you can start building for free with generous limits. On the free tier, your content is used to improve Google's products.
How many free requests does Cloudflare Workers AI give?
Cloudflare's free allocation is 10,000 Neurons per day, and all limits reset at 00:00 UTC.
Can I make more API keys to get more free requests?
No. Gemini limits apply per project rather than per key, and OpenRouter says extra accounts or keys won't change your rate limits.
Is GitHub Models still available?
No. GitHub says GitHub Models was fully retired on 30 July 2026, including its playground and inference API.
